using to catch their most violent criminals. plus i will not be bullied and i will not be disparaged and i will not be threatened out of this office. maintaining her innocence, oakland mayor xiang tao speaks publicly for the first time since last week's fbi raid of her home. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> the mayor, defiant and at times emotional as she faces questions over last week's

7:31 pm

actions by federal investigators. good evening, i'm greg lee. the mayor spoke this morning at oakland city hall to adamantly denying any wrongdoing, and said she will not resign as mayor. she says the fbi search of her home caught her by surprise, and says she has not been charged with a crime. >> i have done nothing wrong. i am confident that i will not be charged with a crime because i am innocent. my role as your mayor continues over the course of the 12 minute address, she was visibly upset and angry. >> at one point her voice cracked and she appeared to wipe her eyes. she then zeroed in on her critics. >> i want to know more about the handful of billionaires from san francisco and from piedmont, who are #### bent on running me out of office. we now have an active recall campaign that is a waste of time and public resources. >> near the end of her address, the mayor said she will not step down. she insists she will continue to move forward with her goals as mayor. she did not

take any questions. town's previous attorney, who she hired the day of the raid, is now explaining why he is no longer representing her. tony brass has officially withdrawn as the attorney for the mayor. he tells ktvu he was not informed ahead of time of the press conference he gave today, and only found out about it when members of the media began calling him. >> it became clear to me when i saw the press conference that she and i had just different approaches about the case, and i think our approaches are inconsistent. so i'm not the right advocate in all likelihood, for her message, brass says he agrees she should get new representation. >> brass continues to say he does not know of any investigation targeting mayor tao. mayor tao released this statement on the shakeup of her legal counsel. it reads, quote, i appreciate tony brass for providing me with initial legal guidance. he helped me better understand the investigation and my legal options. over the weekend, i obtained new legal

counsel and thanked mr. brass for his counsel. i will share the name of my new counsel once agreements are finalized. while mayor tao deals with last week's raid by the fbi, the city of oakland is working to get through a number of crises, including last week's mass shooting at lake merritt. now, many are questioning if the mayor can handle these issues as she faces enormous pressure following the raid. ktvu henry lee is with us in studio. and, henry, what are you hearing from residents? >> yeah, greg, it's no surprise that oakland was already confronting all these hot button issues. but some say the fbi raid is only distracting the mayor from these problems. the fbi raid of oakland mayor sheng tao's home, and her fiery response to what monday comes as the city is facing an extraordinary number of challenges. the big question many oakland residents have is, can the mayor handle it all while facing legal trouble of her own? i think we should avoid a rush to judgment here. >> on the other hand, i think it is a bad time for the mayor to be distracted from all the

7:34 pm

city's problems. >> problems like crime, business closures and budget concerns. on monday came official word the hilton oakland airport will close in august after 56 years in business, in part because of economic challenges after the pandemic. and on sunday, taylor j. a clothing store in the rockridge district had its grand closing a month after this burglary. eight days before the fbi raid, tao stood with new oakland police chief floyd mitchell, whom she hired at his first news conference to discuss recent arrests. on monday, tao made her first remarks about the mass shooting on juneteenth that injured 15 people near lake merritt. i am sickened by the senseless acts of violence, and i want every oakland to know that we will work hard to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. at a rally outside city hall immediately after tao's remarks, retired judge brenda harbin forte, a leader in the recall effort against the mayor, said tao should step down because she can't effectively govern the city. >> and this is all deflection that the mayor, she's trying to

7:35 pm

keep everybody from not focusing on that disastrous budget that that the city council is about to vote on. >> oakland civil rights attorney walter riley is a firm supporter of tao. >> the mayor is on the job and doing that work that the mayor is supposed to do, mandated to do by charter. it's causing even more mistrust in city hall than individuals already have right now. >> i absolutely understand that oakland city council member janani ramachandran succeeded tao in representing the city's laurel, montclair and redwood heights neighborhoods. she isn't taking a stance on the mayor's situation, but she is focused on the city's midcycle budget, which has to be passed this week. >> i am deeply concerned that we are nowhere near figuring out what council member amendments are, what the different proposals are. >> so it's all in the eyes of the beholder as to whether tao can still be an effective mayor and tackle all the issues the city is facing now. today i ran into city administrator justin johnson at starbucks at city center near city hall. he did not want to go on camera, but expressed optimism that oakland

7:44 pm

helping crews mop up areas that still have the potential to start more fires. a cal fire battalion chief explains why this system is so useful. >> it gives us a much more accurate thermal signature. we can really pinpoint any areas of heat that are out on the fire line, and we're able to use some mapping products and turn around a map to crews in near real time, giving them the best intel that they can possibly have to do their mission safely and successfully. >> cal fire says around 160 crew members can fly aircrafts that generate these heat maps. all right, talking about fire weather, let's talk about our weather with roberta gonzalez. roberta, a lot of clouds out there, kind of muggy. and perhaps that could lend itself potentially to some fire danger. >> very good point there. because all of this is subtropical moisture and it's lifting up from the south. and it has been producing a little bit of light rain, but most notably, the dry lightning and the dry lightning is what we are very fair for this time of the year, really, throughout the summer months into the autumn

months. what we're looking at right now, see how that batch of energy out over the bishop area that is what was moving into the bay area earlier this afternoon. it did spark a little bit of activity in the form of some showers and some dry lightning. right now we still see some lingering activity right there. right now over the tracy area. in fact, i'm popping up our doppler radar here, so we can get a better look at just what's going on locally. and you can see that cell that has moved out from over 580 and the altamont pass, and it wants to lift up towards byron. again. all of this is associated with some tropical moisture at the mid and high levels of the atmosphere. and then once the rain begins to fall, we've had such dry conditions locally, it evaporates as we allude to that, as virga. all right, here we go. this is our live weather camera looking out from monument peak. and earlier today i was noticing the bands of rainfall and then the rain would evaporate. but there were some lightning strikes out there. so the bottom line is there's a lot of
