Colin Montgomery 53 years Young no one in the field knows this course better than Monty he’s played it hundreds of times he’s an honorary member his father James was the club secretary here for over 20 years and Monty with the honor of hitting the first t-shot of the 145th open it is a special sporting day arguably the most eagerly anticipated day in the golfing calendar and an historic moment as we show live coverage of the first t-shot for the very first time Monte makes his walk through the tunnel and out onto the first T here at Royal TR I think that might yeah now that’s done that yeah look oh so delete that scene yeah oh it’s starting again it’s fine doesn’t matter okay so we can’t touch that we have to leave that okay so we’re going to have to bring up OBS on here it’s fine this is going it’s downloading we’ve only got we’re missing out on money on on Facebook now be getting 11 this what I like to hear money do you want would you like um did you go to that place where you dropped the cinnamon button is that place yeah sad that was honest it’s actually so sadc I don’t have very good movie education [Music] it is a beautiful Summer’s morning in Southwest Scotland Royal trun is looking a picture these famous links hosting the 145th open as we begin our journey to identify the champion golfer of the Year could it possibly be this man Colin Montgomery 53 years Young no one in the field knows this course better than Monty he’s played it hundreds of times he’s an honorary member his father James was the club secretary here for over 20 years and Monty with the honor of hitting the first t-shot of the 145th open it is a special sporting day arguably the most eagerly anticipated day in the golfing calendar and an historic moment as we show live coverage of the first t- shot for the very first time Monte makes his walk through the tunnel and out onto the first T here at Royal trun playing today with Australia’s Mark leash Luke Donald [Applause] 6:35 the official start time for this first group The clar Jug waiting on the te for them that’s a nice touch as well Greg Norman described it as the sexiest trophy in sport Jack Nicholas put it a different way he said it’s like holding a baby in your hands but it is the oldest of all the four major championships the one that every single golfer in the world would simply love to win Don Boule alongside me Dominic Holier in the commentary position and also Wayne Grady who came pretty close to winning the open here way back in 1989 morning Wayne morning Dom yeah it’s great to be here what a beautiful morning 6:35 a.m. at least it’s a great time all my friends down in Australia it’s a great time to uh for them to watch it’s 3:30 in the afternoon so they get a chance to watch a a long day golf at a decent time David Lancaster one of two official starters here at the open no Iva Robson this year although I’m told that he’s been invited so he’s going to be somewhere around but just enjoying this Dom Boule also a good time for your friends back in Hong Kong to be watching absolutely over in the Far East it’s 1:30 in the afternoon lunchtime and I’m sure there are lots of people around there TVs and uh what a scene this is the purest form of golf there is Lynx golf just wonderful and even though I think this is his 22nd Open Championship color Montgomery will still be nervous as every player will be they’ve given Colin the honor of hitting the first shot in this year’s Open Championship what a great honor that is although I’m sure he would have liked a bit of a sleep in but he’s not a ceremonial goer this week he I think he still believes if he plays well he he can contend no one knows this course better than Monty he’s a member here grew up playing here it shows how serious he was do he actually went through the qualifying he didn’t he wasn’t exempt for it through his play but he went out and he qualified at Gail’s links yeah he wouldn’t have done that for any other open no not at all yes he finished third in the qualifier and the wind was predicted to blow in the other direction not the prevailing wind actually into the players on the front nine but actually it’s not the case it is slightly down and off the right which is the prevailing wind and that’s why you see a lot of players will hit irons off this first te three Monty says he’s going to H here faded off those leftand bunkers you can see down there almost ready to go for the 145th open ladies and gentlemen welcome to R trun for the first day play of the 145th Open championship this is game number one on the tea from Scotland Colin Montgomery [Applause] looking a little anxious but it’s 250 yards to the bunet down the left hand side and it’s a good opening t- shot’ll be from Australia Mark Lehman lost out in the playoff at St Andrews last year for the Open Championship from a town called warold in Australia where it does [Applause] blow this just is a big big lump of a blow it’s just a such a simple swing on the tea from England Luke Donald A Familiar cries of Luke ringing around that first T his father is Scottish so he’s feeling quite at home Luke also with an nine beautiful Rhythm as always and that looks like it’s split the Fairway and these Fairways are just perfect quite tight Le Mo but the whole course is absolutely in perfect shape yes they’ve had enough rain up here a little bit of heat and I’ve never seen the golf course look as green and as Lush I think Monty will be glad to get that one out of the way offy [Applause] strides Luke Donald a former world number one we struggled for a couple of years but he’s showing some encouraging signs just recently of a return to something like his best form time yeah looking out to see across the fth of Clyde 13° currently top temperature today around 16° uh Celsius early 60s Fahrenheit and the wind as you can see between 5 and 15 mph the green not the quickest just under 10 ft on the stimp meter we are told that there’s going to be quite a bit of rainfall tomorrow and the breeze is going to start to pick up and as Don ble was saying it could start to to shift around from Tomorrow onwards so we’ll keep an eye on that but very changeable the forecast at the moment yes during the practice rounds wind has CED during the day but mostly it’s been in the prevailing direction as you can see Fescue and bent on the fairways and greens architect Willie Fernie and the holders of the course record pretty impressive pair of names there Tiger Woods Greg Norman of course in the final round in 89 to join you and Mark caler in the playoff Wayne yeah I was uh very happy to see his name start flying up the leaderboard let’s so have a good look here at the first hole just a short T four 367 yards and all players taking irons and safely in the Fairway although Monty just in the light rough it’s a seemingly fairly gentle start to this course isn’t it you start with three par fours all under 400 yards long yes and then a a par five fourth good solid par three in the fifth and then the six of the five so you really want to do some scoring early playing just over yeah okay see you sh you do you need to do is stay out of the bunkers 95 of them here at Royal trun and they are penal so Donald first away with his second he’ll be delighted with that there’s no better Turf to hit off than links Turf with your [Applause] irons and the point you make about the bunkers Dom is very good and one the secret if there is one secret to lyx golf is avoid Fairway bunkers and it’s inevitable you’re going to hit it in a greenside bunker at some time but you only need to hit it in about three or four Fairway bunkers for the week and you’re not going to win yeah they’re real hazards so Monty second just out of this light rough hit that hard with a pitching wedge [Applause] oh perhaps expecting a little more help from the wind he was certainly looking upwards might have expected a bit of a flyer too I think it wouldn’t blow a candle out out there at the moment so leean last to go shaving up to just cut this one in got a nice kick off the down slope there and a really good birdie opportunity for both he and Donald on the opening hope it’s hard to believe that these guys will be able to play around a golf finish and still be in time for breakfast first off at 6:35 in the morning final group this afternoon at 4:16 well Monty did say this would suit him being first out he does like to play at a a fairly brisk pace and of course they’ll have a a morning tea time tomorrow too which is great you can see Monty’s major record majors and uh US Open of course where he came closest and his best Open Championship performance at St Andrews in 2005 when he finished behind Tiger Woods few shots behind yes and he lost the PGA in 95 to Steve elkington in the playoff but he’s got three Majors on the champions tour the way they’re looking at this I think he he might have drawn a bad lie and which he has damn well the gods are cruel actually I’m not sure he can get that out way well whether he can go at the flags one thing he should be able to if he has to hit it left so he can get a stance he should be able to get it up but if he’s trying to go at the flag he mightn’t be able to get far enough up that hill he’s all right the old famous Monty teapot the hands on the hips I don’t think he’s convinced you know well no so now he’s got to be careful if he doesn’t think he can get out got to be careful where you walk around that bunker don’t want it to come back down and into some Footprints I’m not sure he can go out right either because he’s got no stance he may have to go left which is obviously not away from the green but well he’s he looks like he’s about ready to go oh no what a shame well he definitely can’t go at the pin now back into his foot Mark he’s got he’s just got to go back back with stor hasn’t he well that’s I can’t that’s the highest part of the bunker he’s got to go into the the other bunker I think I I did this at uh tweet heads Golf Club many many years ago back in my footprints I took four to get out of the bunker On a par five took 10 so they all started calling me boow Derek [Laughter] fourth shot now for Monte yeah well this is the sensible plate and that is Link’s golf just give me a second could you please don’t stand behind me thank you we’ll wander back to the tea for the second group off today Steven ala Marcus Fraser this is game number two on the te from New Zealand Steven ala 44 year old kiwi who’s played his golf right around the world came through final qualifying at Royal SN ports playing in his fourth Open Championship I’ve been playing mostly on the web.com this year did have his PGA Tour card last year you can see there finish in a major and this event tied for 19th also an iron [Applause] on the T from Australia marus fifth shot now for Colin Montgomery up Ahead Green side he must get it up and down get in Marcus Fraser from Australia opening t-shot beautiful slow rhythmical swing just looks like he Pats it but he’s three-time winner on the European Tour on the tea from Kore Lee sangi 24y old Korean yeah won the SK Telecom open in Korea early in the year that’s a big tournament on the Korean tour and uh using a hybrid quickly down for the T likes it that’s the most aggressive shot we’ve seen there’s been talk that a few players might try and drive the screen certainly Dustin Johnson and Jason day they’ve got the power to to do it but uh we’ll have to wait and see yeah there were quite a few players having a go ahead in the practice session this is tournament conditions of course Luke Donald at the first for birdie first birdie of the Open Championship to former number one in the world Luke Donald this is really a very easy part bright lip beautifully done so Monty’s playing Partners or fellow competitors off to a flyer Monty still with a p for a six a double Bergie at that first hole having got caught up in the green side bunker well this must go in well it’s a good up and down in the end but that is not the start obviously that Colin Montgomery was looking for brilliant to see so many people out early to support him but he’ll be slightly deflated that’s for sure nothing like the Open Championship the atmosphere the people they’re the most knowledgeable fans of all in golf and they’ll just fill this golf course over the next few hours very similar in in some ways to a course like like the old course at sandre is very much an out and back there are a couple of changes of directions here but pretty much know where where the wind’s going to be on most holes and maybe the most brutal back nine in Championship golf especially if it’s playing into the wind or into the win and off the left you really want to get two three four under par on this front line if you can when you played so well here in 1989 when did you come in with a plan and if so what was that yeah I mean if you landed I was just playing so well I’d won in America 2 weeks earlier so I was playing great and it was just keep as I said keep it in the Fairway and from the Fairway you’ve always got a chance and the ball was rolling it was bouncing it was dry so I grow another leg when it’s uh when it’s bouncy so I can get that bit extra distance Marcus Razer currently the leader of the Asian tour order of Merit he won the may Bank Championship just a few months ago hits everything with a slight fade so this is a good pin something like 120 yards to go for Fraser [Applause] second te Monty’s away leechman and Donald already safely in the Fairway there oh it’s another stray one from kin Montgomery Steve Ela good solid player 44 years old and he’s he’s been around a long time playing mostly on web.com to now but he just there’s no weakness to his game but it’s probably his length but has kept him back from being much better take a seat whoa It’s hard to compete with the big boys and the kids today if you haven’t got that length perfect t- shot for the Korean I mean that is A1 qualified by finishing second in the Mauna open in Japan and well you be looking at knocking this in close couple of ways of playing this you can land it just over the bunker on the down hope get that forward kick or maybe fly a little bit further up go oh lovely he enjoyed that Monty in the rough at the second absolutely no chance of getting it close to this pin it’s got a play to the right just about as good as he could do but he had the that big gaping bunker sitting there in front of him too didn’t want anything to do with it now that’s a real tease isn’t it having that Open championship trophy sitting there you’re not game to go up and touch it you just look at it back to the second and the second shot here for Luke Donald you see the breeze just starting to pick up now well if you can’t have calm conditions at 6:30 in the morning not much hope for the rest of it if you are an bir great time to come out and watch make your way around the course pretty easily leechman second oh I think that’s going to find the bottom of the bunk up unusual shot that that’s just a an unforced error yeah especially with a on a wedge third group on the opening T Jun Wang from Korea Spain’s John RAM and America’s Ryan Palmer there’s Jung hun Wang great season two wins this is game number three from Korea Jun hung Wong big moment for this youngster still only 20 and like you said d a two-time winner on the European tour but he can play [Applause] on the tea from Spain John Ram this guy shown himself to uh be quite a player hasn’t he he’s only just turned Pro and he played he’s played Four tournaments first two was an Amer then he turned Pro and he had a great start the quickens loans a great finish that’s what qualified him here for this Open Championship he’s got a short compact swing but a oh that’s a big mistake that oh oh he got away with one there on the te from USA Ryan Palmer 39y old Ryan Palmer almost the combined age of his two playing Partners three us wins last the Hawaiian open in 2010 and taking the driver yeah this is good to see 367 yards at 352 to the green well he’s an American and he’s a Texan and they’ve done pretty well here at TR in the past was 280 yards past that last bunker down the left hand side and the rough there’s a couple of long bits but over all the rough’s not that bad so and especially with that right pin position Mark lean has played out of the green side bunker here at the second he’s pretty close Monte to get one of those Drop shots back [Applause] Lee for a birdie ala and Fraser didn’t make birdies tied for the lead at the open Donald for his birdie at the second that’s 34 start for Luke what a putting stroke this is best put on the PJ tour for a couple of years Luke Donald a lot of people thought he he went in search of extra distance off the tea he disputes that says he was actually looking for more accuracy in his driving when he decided to make some changes got a new coach now he’s back with Pat Goss who coached him at University he went to Chuck Cook for about a year year and a half and it didn’t work out it’s the driving range here at Royal TR quite a walk actually from there across to the first T got to allow yourself a good five or 10 minutes to get over there they’ve laid this whole new tea it’s a beautiful area beautiful look how they’ve torn it up already through the week 13 377 yards it’s a nice gentle start here at Roy trun the first three hes all under 400 yards there is a water hazard cuts across this Fairway that’s why these guys will hit irons off the tea by the way Mark leean couldn’t hold his part at the second so a bogey five there for the Australian so he’s back to level par not much has changed in that golf swing over the years he’s so loose he’s so flexible Mon it’s quite incredible when you shake his hand you feel like you’re getting it he’s got a Rubber Arm but it’s a big hand yeah he’s got big hands and big feet all three safely in the Fairway it’s a beautiful light out there this morning isn’t it almost golden so Luke Donald and sanki Lee lead the way at the 145th open in the very early stages Elsa Craig away in the distance which you can see from turnbury of course as well which is just down the coastline in fact we’re in terrific golfing country here next door to preswick which staged the very first Open Championship way back in 1860 that’s the aisle of Aaron you can see across the water there as well John Ram the Spaniard coming out of the Sami Ru he’s lucky wasn’t in the bunker and it’s actually a pretty good angle in there the little bits of luck that can make huge difference at the end of the week here finished tied third at quickens loan so it’s first week as a professional he won over $400,000 so not bad yeah what was your first great my first check was $570 I finished fifth in the boulder classic in kgly was all sand greens it wasn’t a blade of grass on the entire course m i Jim furick in the foreground and they met kedc Abby barrat from Thailand just behind him that’s con Montgomery first to play he’s got 167 left but a good angle in even though he was a member here he couldn’t play on this old course the championship course was 18 years old he had to play on the Portland on the children’s course until he was 18 everything about this shot sets up for him Dom doesn’t it he likes to hit the ball left to right pins back right how you tying it’s like he set that pin himself he’s always had great distance control with his IR that that comes from good contact dist distance control is all about the contact that you make hitting it flush every time Mar lean unfortunate bogey on the second but he’s trending in the right direction in this Championship tied for fifth two years ago in Hoy Lake of course was in the playoff last year5 yeah that’s not a big one but no not at all I think anything Max like back camera he was just on a slight down slope there so it’s the ball forward he won the 2012 Travelers shot 64 on the last round he had dinner with the golfing tragic of former Australian cricket captain Ricky poning the night before so he gave him some inspiration just a nice solid one next day [Applause] that’s awkward second iron shot in a row he’s just missed to the right have a look at him old Sandy ly 58y old his 40th consecutive Open championship 41 and all still loves it can’t get enough golf bit like Peter senior this guy can’t get enough of it on the tea from England Scott Gregory this here is am champion won last month down at Royal fourth call this one of the many bonuses that goes with winning that prestigious title an invitation to the Masters next year a spot in the US Open as well but all he’s thinking about is making good contact trying and find the Fairway good swing on the tea from the USA David Duval well was this guy good for a period of time one in 2001 at Royal lthm 44 years old he had some wrist injuries he broke his wrist he had surgery on it so he’s back and healthy again not sure about the Gregory peex but uh doing a lot of TV work these days just a little knock down there D thank you David yolander there Sand’s wife up on the green Ryan Palmer to open his account with a birdie only right in the middle Leash from off the back of the green looks good birdie bogey birdie start for Australia’s Mark Lehman so back to one under well you won’t get a better surface to putt on at the moment and then they’re a very gentle pace so it’s not like you you get scared on them not like an auster or US Open green or something like that Royal Melbourne Donald also with a putter it’s coming up the slope a little bit then it flattens out putting through the Shadows of the cameras good Pace that should be a par for so here remain one under tied for the lead [Applause] large crowds already I’ve a lot of them have come out to watch Monty in what possibly could be his last open we won’t ride him off yet but this is for birdie to get one back after that disastrous six at the first get there yes back to one over yeah and heading to the pathy fourth be expecting to get another birdie there birdie at the first for Sang Lee can he make it a birdie birdie start yes he can one of those all round good parts two under through two very composed for a young BL isn’t he hey First Open Championship birdie birdie this is not so hard wait till he hits the 10th T we’ll go to the fourth T and our first group first real opportunity to get the driver out a couple of bunkers up the left side first one’s about 290 from where they’re tearing off from you can see it just there he’ll hit it at it with his little cut oh it’s not cutting it’s gone the other way let’s uh that’ll just be layup this is 600 yd power five so you’ll need to get a lot of Club on that to reach to right of it sure slly the left getting a bit close to that first bunker and that was that’s an Australian shot Skippy straight over it that’s perfect now the rough is not too bad but there are spots aren’t there Grace we’re walking around the course here on Tuesday and uh in general it’s okay but if you’re unlucky and you find some of the thicker stuff it’s really quite uh nasty from two faders of the golf ball to a man who normally plays with a little draw not this time fit it into the Fairway nicely you just got to be careful because the Fairway slopes from right to left so if you turn it over so the guys have all been all tried to hit a slider in and cut it back into the hill starting to build up there at range players generally get to the tea about an hour before the the driving range about an hour before get to choose whatever golf balls they they use out on the course Callaway’s Tidus Nikes Taylor Made Patrick Reed be off in around 50 minutes or so surprising it’s not that impressive a record in the majes yet of course it’s a talented play it shot a good final round last week in Scotland six under after six on Sunday so he was heading in the right direction got the headphones on did you ever get into that he’s got the the don’t know what they’re listening to Dom I tried once but I remember Richard zul the Canadian he was the first to do that wasn’t he back in the old Walkman days Sandy ly you think the old Scott it have thicker skin he’d be out there with no sweater on and that should be an opening for good three- we run here for Sandy played last week in Scottish open here at the Open Championship and next week the senior open at Cary so this is the par five fourth it looked as though Monty’s ball was rolling into some nasty rough we’ll have to wait and see with that he’s still got 295 yards to go to the hole sorry I said this was 600 y this this is 555 the six to is the longest hole in Open championship at 600 yard they have the longest and shortest holes here at TR in the open CH he’s had a break here Monty look at that down you please the shadow thanks yeah you saw where the pin was it’s tuck behind that left bunker so you want to try and hug the right edge of the Fairway here with his second give himself a better angle still got a long third shot in the that flag today is tucked on the left hand side so anything to the right of that for his third little Launchpad here for Luke Donald he won’t put even be looking at the pin anything on the green to that TV tower three loose iron shots in a row for Donald two to the right now one to the left and that’s always been the strength of this game isn’t it slightly awkward light B well below his feet once again just try and run it up the right side although that started a little left Australian to lose in a playoff Steve elkington and Stuart applebe back to Ernie at mfield all those years ago 2002 Thomas L was the other man in in that playoff this is Scott Gregory the Amer Champion for a birdie at the first well done young man so kers sang Le one ahead of Mark leechman Luke Donald Ryan Palmer and Scott Gregory ala fra RAM and Duval at level par and K Montgomery after the double bogy at the opening hole one over get over there down yeah uh yeah third shot now for toin Montgomery at the par 54th really surprises me that that stat there one runner up and only one other top 10 you can see the pin tucked in behind the bunker on the left left that’s a great shot there from Monty yeah You’ think someone that grew up on links course lyns Golf and the player that might’s been his whole career that he would have done better at the Open Championship another one that I was always surprised about that didn’t win this was Bernard Langer yeah he came close a few times though didn’t he I’ve always felt Monty he’s he’s got such a soft ball fly that maybe when the winds get up it’s not that penetrating flight that some other players have that may have been the reason why his open record is not as good I know he always felt that his game was best suited to a US Open being very much uh an accuracy player this man’s open record couple of top tied for fifth Luke Donald here he is with a great short game he’d be looking at getting this up and down think he’s going to try and bump it into The Fringe off a slightly downhill light play it back of the stance lie doesn’t look too bad the grass seems to be running towards the target yeah just in The Fringe kind of kill the momentum a little bit and let it skip up and run close to the hole need to turn your radio down well that was a bit uncharacteristic there for Luke Donald what seemed like a pretty straightforward bump and run down to Lehman next in the front bunker if he’s sitting in the middle of the bunker no problem great shot and Mark lechman will have that for his third birdie today yeah I thought maybe it was just too much loft on that club he used for that shot he should have used a gap wedge or his pitching wedge come out a little bit lower now he’s got this putter out ooh well that one’s rolled on a bit as well all of a sudden Luke Donald struggling to make his PA here he making making a right mess of this hole isn’t he after being the only one to find the Fairway now mody with about 15 ft for second birdie in a row he’s got it he’s going nowhere else straight in there for color Montgomery the local favorite back to level par well done Monty Alice is saying you better have done that I didn’t get out of bed at 4:00 to watch it make double Bogies yeah Donald from the middle of the Fairway looking at making a four maybe even a three he’s got a what five and a half fo for a five well done so he stays one under P Birdie the first P the next three leash for a birdie four so he started today birdie bogy birdie birdie and they head to the first PA three of the course our championship leader at the third a beautiful touch he missed his last three cuts on the Japan tour Le I don’t know where this form’s come from but uh he is off to a flyer New Zealander Danny Lee and at the first hole big Drive second shot well he played some good golf last week at Castle Stewart in the aine asset management Scottish open and he’s brought that form here definitely the toughest hole of the first five isn’t this great certainly isn’t the flags back right over the big cavernous bunker at the front so you need to get something teared up the on the left foot and hit it as high as you can 206 yards center of the greens are not a bad play but when you can hit it like that why go to the center of the green straight out Monty that for three in a row it does matter one I think he leaked that to the right it’s not too [Applause] bad turn the F off please now Luke Donald let’s see if we can hit a better iron shot than the previous few holes you got your phone on you come on me strch off now please you want to get thank you who’s getting calls at this time in the morning I thought it sounded like someone’s alarm no he’s he’s not settled is he and he’s being put off by every little thing that’s going on around him so that’s four poor Swings with irons from Luke Donald already that’s that’s normally Monty that gets put off by every little thing butterflies landing on flowers Marcus Fraser at the third hole trying to make his first birdie today he’s one of the best Putters in the world Danny Lee birdie put here at one wonder what the scoring average on one’s going to be at the end of the day if what we’ve seen so far is any indication it’ll be about 3.4 3.3 here’s last week’s winner the swed Alex noren tends to play everything with a c Australia Steven [Applause] 15 players currently on the course seven subpar [Applause] we’ve been here three days now this is certainly the calmest conditions we’ve encountered I mean it’s ideal scoring conditions at the moment and you really want to take advantage yes you do and it’s good to see that the weather forecast is the same here as they are in Australia they got no idea the forecast was for wind to be quite strong and from the southwest which be and Luke Donald oh sitting down in some gune came out nicely got about 8 fo left for his par so talking about conditions being totally different weren’t they Dom wind in the face and off the right on the front nine which is totally alien to this uh tatun Royal TR yeah Monday the wind was blowing about 25 30 m hour and then Tuesday when you and I walked around the course it was probably 10 to 15 mil an hour but I mean it’s only it’s a seha right now but it can change quickly it’s not a bad average for his last couple of opens hasn’t made a p yet today [Applause] leean apologies for those uh loss of pictures as Mark lean does make his first par today so he stays at two under and tied for the lead Luke still outside of Monty this for his par we can’t really say it hasn’t been coming he did make a birdie at the opening hole but it’s been a bit of a struggle since then for Luke Donald and as he moves One Way Monty’s moving in the other direction double bogey at the first Bird’s at three and four to get those Drop shots back so this is for three in a row that was there was a lot of break on that putt even though it was only about 8 ft that moved 34 in maybe even a bit more so a little disappointed but he is putting well he’s had three1 putts today should have had four ah the 2011 open Champion Darren Clark Europe’s Ridder Cup captain hasn’t played a lot of golf recently has admitted he’s found it difficult to concentrate on his game with all the other stuff that goes on when you are the Ridder Cup captain but it is a big tournament for those players who are trying to make his team in fact a big few weeks with the uspga championship coming up quickly as well there’s not much of a break this year is there they’ve got next week and then the PGA the following week where all because of the Olympics has condense the schedule [Music] [Applause] [Applause] now look back towards the six t the longest hole in Open Championship Roa six hey guys one yards yes they’ve got the longest and the shortest here haven’t they because they got the postage stamp the eighth which we’ll see shortly as well thank Qui please once again you got to avoid the Fairway bunkers couple on the left and there’s one on the right that is blind to the players on the te it’s so still out there sounds traveling everywhere normally it’s blowing and all you can hear is the wind now Monty’s ready Fairway fits him well with his left or right shot [Applause] well that’s where you expect to find him couple of the phas weren’t fading for Monty but that’s normal business resumed leechman next it’s going a touch right looking a little anxiously pulled up quickly so suggest it’s in some heavy stuff this is the whole Bobby clampit in the 82 open made an eight when he was leading in day three [Applause] wow that’s a long way past Monty Mon’s M’s uh sneaky long for an old fell but that was uh big drive there from lukee Donald Darren [Applause] clar playing in his 25th Open [Applause] Championship on the tea from Denmark thoron [Applause] Olsen well he showed he can play uh the lynx game last year winning the Dunhill links championship at St Andrews he’d like to impress the rer Cup captain Oh his first couple of days Allis on the tea from the USA Jim fury ride a cup foe of Darren Clarks Jim furick former US Open Champion just not long been back he’s had some hand injuries back out in the course now where he’s most comfortable it’s not the most comfortable looking swing but boy is it effective thank you yeah no one stands as close to the ball as furick do they his hands are almost touching his his left thigh runner up in the US Open just a few weeks ago that was his 30th runner up finish on the PGA tour along with 17 wins it’s not a bad record he’s 47 now Darren Clark moved back to Northern Ireland and Port Rush few years back now open Championship heading there of course in the not too distant future that’s about two mile off the coast there lady Isle beautiful Coastline here in Scotland and nice to see it on such a spectacular day postcard day really so the par five sixth hole yeah yeah no chance for Colin Montgomery to this in still it’s a very narrow entrance to this sixth green if you’re going for it in two and runs off to the left so it’s a can be a dangerous ho especially today with the pin just next to that left hand bunker Monty leaving himself a pretty full third shot guys just stand really still please thanks leean up in the right hand rough bit awkward on a Downs slope ball above his feet out a gnarly rough be careful not to go left seems like he’s made good contact with that problem there though is he is the angle and you can see that that bunker guarding that front left hand flag just a little bit too much cut there for Luke Donald furick at the first second shot judged that beautifully red the light he was going to not get very much spin on it landed it well short of the green and just a beautiful link style shot birdie put for Lee at four to get to three under an outright championship leader wow what a start from this young guy goodness [Applause] me well it’s been an excellent season on the European tour for a Asian players for Koreans for Su Lee for jungon Wang maybe that confidence is just making its way through the ranks Darren Clark’s second shot into the [Applause] first not too far away from hauling it for Eagle as this to Darren last night on the radio talking about how he felt he had a sense of calm when he played at at Royal St George’s in 2011 and won there it’s a he doesn’t get it often but he’s had it in his two World Golf Championship wins as well something happens everything becomes calm and clear excellent start for the Korean Sang Lee three birdes in the first four holes look at all those Australians good one of the Aussies this week uh get rid of the strangled holds that Americans have had on this Open Championship here at TR they’ve won the last six this is the ninth staging of the open at Royal TR h on the crosswalk but the LIE looks pretty good slightly uphill it’s good wedge player lean Baker Finch and I played with him in the path three at Austra a couple of years ago and he hit sand wedge or or wedge to every hole which ranged from 85 yards to about 150 yards and every whatever he wanted if you wanted eat it longer just used to down coock it a little bit more and squeeze it out now Monty just wage oh oh he’s woken up still asleep on the first that’s what happened he has certainly warmed to his task out there that’s vintage Colin Montgomery just a great iron player and almost goes in twice you can give him a birdie [Applause] four Luke Donald’s third from quite a bit closer tell you what he was lucky not to roll back into that bunker wasn’t he after the second shot nicely controlled just a couple of feet further out than Monty did you like the way that Monty marked his ball Wayne Jim furick birdie put at the first can he join the party certainly can yeah not bad considering where he was off the tea there at the opening hole you can see how narrow this entrance to the sixth green is it’s a very long and narrow green overall they’re not huge targets are they out here at Royal trun and there’s a lot of runoff you don’t really see it so much on the television but when you’re walking out there there’s some quite steep drop offs off the side of the greens like 17 the the long par three you really don’t get the image of that how far it falls off on both sides when you’re watching it on the TV just hold up please this to join the leader good all the way just touch more anyway 200 under through six for Mark lean good start Luke Donald for his bird he kind of needs something doesn’t he Luke the sweater is off he’s warming up back to one under he walking through the streets of air last yesterday afternoon and heard a lady saying it’s going to be a heat wave here tomorrow it’s going to get all of about 22 and after his wonderful third hopefully another birdie for Monty three and four holes for the Scot so he is underpar for the first time today that’s a great recovery after that awful start it was actually a very good up and down on the opening hold to make a double bogy for tobian Allison here can Darren Clark get a three I’ll revise that it’s uh by the weather app it says that it’s going to get to quite a warm 17 degrees this afternoon so nice and bomy disappointing par for Darren Clark elevated t-shot there just on the right of your screen the seventh downhill slight dog leg to the right well bunkered both left and right just you see the two bunkers in the distance on to the Grand stands on the left just want to Lay It Up underneath there to give yourself a a clear shot visual into the green first hole that doesn’t play along the water comes back Inland it’s quite a wide Fairway but you said Grace that you always had trouble on this t- shot yeah I always struggled with this t-shot looks pretty good there for Monty just visually I I never felt comfortable never really hit a bad t-shot on this hole but I just never felt comfortable and when you get down there you got a football feeli to hit it at yeah it’s probably one of the widest Fairways on the course perfect for Monty with his trusty caddy alist McLean they’ve been together for a long long time they did have a a separation for a couple of years but probably about 7:00 well considering he’s hit quite a few poor iron shots he’s under par it’s about 240 to the first bunker there on the or the second bunker there excuse me on the left and he’s safely past that so very good iron shot that was quite aggressive [Applause] this is another good birdie chance once you got it in the Fairway and then you’ve got the short the postage stamp if you hit it on the green there it’s always a birdie chance and then the golf course starts to get some teeth fangs I think to the fifth hole sang he Le for another birdie stay three under through the first five holes maybe he’d looked up maybe you’d seen a scoreboard and seen his name on top tell the caddy to take a picture of that that’s what one of our Australian golf Union officials told Ian Baker Finch back in 1984 you better take a picture of that I you’ll never you won’t see that again Ian wasn’t impressed Jim P’s playing the second hul and this is his second shot having birded the first good smart shot just center of the green give yourself a opportunities well he rarely plays anything other than smart golf does he Jim Fury Daren Clark pretty much the same distance oh that’s going to funnel in oh it didn’t that’s a good break 36 right so I saying you need to be in the leftand side of the Fairway to give yourself a a visual of the flag here at 7 but I think Monty knows every part of this hole be good he says that’s not bad I’m sure he could play this place blindfolded having grown up here lean got a better angle in but you can see the everything sort of works from the right edge of the green hit so you can hit it at Montgomery’s ball set not bad probably a little bit better than he thinks now in the absolute perfect position Luke Donald let’s see if he can hit a decent IR mind you this is only wedge so he hasn’t got much left I heit an iron off the te but he’s hit it about 275 he must have really killed it looking to knock this one close well the seventh grain’s the southern tip of the the golf course right down near preswick airport it’s fantastic down there when the planes are taking off into the breeze and flying straight over the top of the eighth T bit like playing the lakes in Australia in Sydney when they using the East West Runway you can see the they’re only a few hundred feet above your head as they go up over pretty solid performances in the major championships he was fortunate wasn’t he not to end up in that green side bunker that’s nicely worked out you really got to use your imagination on these links courses see the brakes visualize them he almost puted That Into the Bunker had to really get quite close to the lip 6t sang he Le three W off the te that’s a surprise trying to just keep it short of the bunkers long way down there with the three-wood Marcus Fraser with a hybrid not one of the longer hitters either just leak that a little bit right remember the other day we were watching some of the guys it was interesting watching the clubs that they were Hitting off these par five TS the the fourth hole some of the hitting four iron off and they were only hitting irons off off six here it was 300 y it is down to that second bunker at six as we go forward to seven and the birdie putt for Mark Lehman yeah running at 9 11 these greens just under 10 which by tour standards it’s slow but obviously when you’re up against the coast in Scotland the wind can blow so hard that you can’t have them cut them too low because the wind can start playing Havoc so the RNA being very sensible yeah well people will remember what happened at St Andrews last year when the winds really gusted didn’t they on Saturday we had a Monday finish in the end Donald for birdie to get to two under when you consider some of these iron shots in the opening five six holes he’s what under pars a pretty good score [Applause] he’ll need to make sure he hits a good iron shot at the next hole he’s made a couple this length he’s got to go there was always left he won’t be too disappointed with the par for makes his way up the hill to towards the postage stamp and you start to get a little nervous as you’re walking up that path Lee second to the par five sixth I love that fizzing sound you get off this turf good layout birdie at the first for Jim furck can he make it two out of two yes he can nice start took a couple of bubbles in the middle of the putt there but didn’t knock it offline there it is the eighth T of the postage stamp colum Montgomery it’s 120 yards fantastic shot it’s always nice when you see the ball on this putting surface it’s a tiny Target but also what makes it awkward is is the first hole you’re playing into the wind you’ve played down wind or down and off the right virtually the first seven holes and all of a sudden you turn to this tiny little par three and it’s into the wind and where that pin is the green is only n yards wide it’s not good oh that is very very lucky there for Luke Donald but another loose iron shot yeah that was stuck behind him wasn’t he tried to catch up and he just did just squared the club face up enough to avoid it missing the green to the right trying to just turn one over a little right to left and if that’s in the bunker now what’s that good oh he’s missed the Trap was it be back in it that’s a good 10 ft down below the surface Dom it is and he’s on a slight Downs slope so five bunkers on the eighth hole and each one of them has a bunker Cam little bit like the the 17th at austa or the the 12th I beg you pardon the 12th at austa or the 17th at Sor grass it is one of those holes that certainly gets the players thinking papad for Clark two he’s been struggling with that Club virtually ever since he won the open five years ago and he been struggling when he won heading into the week at Raw St George’s as well here’s Scott Gregory they get to two [Applause] under he’s one of only two amors in the field the other Stefano moli the 2015 European Amit champion playing lighter to [Applause] dat now from a down slope 10 ft below the surface and there’s a oh oh that wow what a great shot there won’t be a better shot than that there today at the postage stamp he and his caddy both know just how good that was he’s [Laughter] relieved yeah Rory maroy on the in the practice round on Tuesday how many shots did he take out of that coffin bunker I think he took five I think he made a nine in the yeah you can see there just another foot or so to the right and Luke Donal would have been heading down into coffin bunker as well is it there it is 32 for Luke M Luke Donald gets to 200 P you must be hungry great third shot at the par 56 for Lee championship leader well that’s a strange one he’s a long way out in terms of his yardage there let’s go back to the eighth and Monty yeah just inside right lip firm well it wasn’t firm but he had the right line Conor Montgomery moves to two on the PA after starting with a double bogey six four birdes in six holes for the Scott now for just a genius save leean to two under so everyone in this group two under power he knows he’s dodged a bullet there Lehman I was here yesterday afternoon standing on the eth T in the practice round and this grand stand by the green was absolutely packed and so is the one behind the te it’s it’s a great hole to watch golf guaranteed drama well there’s nothing wrong with a long game for Darren Clark young am Gregory t-shot at the path three fifth big bunker waiting there and it’s just over it great shot Beau he’s got that to get to three under tie for the lead first hole and this is America’s Patrick Reed for a [Applause] three still only 25 years of age seems have been around for a while doesn’t he t- shot at nine just a nine it’s 275 yards to the first of two bunkers down the left hand side just want it up the right hand side if possible there’s a big hill on the left that blocks you the view of your second shot he down again yes yeah more down yeah nice to see these guys playing briskly they’ve been on the course less than an hour and 45 minutes and they’re on the ninth T it’s pretty good Pace it’s you can only play as fast as your first few groups and it’s nice to see they haven’t put any Turtles out there at the start guys that are all known to be slow players it’s a it’s a nightmare isn’t it get the whole field off to a bad start we saw a couple of guys Dom on Tuesday hitting driver off here which was an un quite an unusual play it brings the GS into play on the right it certainly does but if you find the Fairway it leaves them with nothing in whereas these guys wellow they hit iron they probably got eight seven eight iron in so it’s really the sensible play it’s a fairly wide Fairway but you’re hitting driver it gets very narrow although he was unlucky I think he hit into the bank so it killed the momentum slightly so he’s a long way back Lee well we’re not quite sure what happened to sang Le’s third shot here at six but this is what’s left for birdie that’ll be a par five remain three under and the Open Championship leader he’s missed two puts of this length on the first two holes kind of well done well done but it wasn’t in the [Applause] middle it’s of those things that’s already in the back of his mind he not pting beautifully but at least he’s back to even part sang though who leads the way by one from big group at two underpar David Duval has picked up an early birdie 2001 open Champion among those at one under Darren quite often has uh turned to Bob Rella hasn’t he to help him out with his putting and he was on that practice putting green with Bob earlier this week the amateur for a birdie on the fifth to get to three under know I saw P Podrick Harrington walking with Bob Rotella yesterday Bob Rotella is a very well-known sports psychologist in the United uned States works with a lot of lot of players and a lot of different sports people he’s written quite a few books one of them golf is not a game of perfect par three for Scott Gregory so he remains at two under one off the lead played really nicely down at Roy po call and they had some pretty brutal weather conditions across the week down there some heavy rain pretty strong winds so you won’t IND uh the forecast as it is for trun for the rest of the week you see the background there the coastline and just around the corner there is Turn part of the open rotor t- shot on seven for Z leite going with a hybrid it’ll bring that right hand bunker oh it sits nicely a bounce forward it was bringing the bunker into play he did that on the sixth he hadit a three-w and to lay up short of the bunkers but he actually was pin level with the bunkers same thing there you’re going to lay up you should make sure you lay up he took hybrid off the first twoo remember which got him up level with the bunkers so yeah he’s he’s flirting with them being told that Mark lean’s already hit his second shot he remember he was well back off the te and he’s missed the green now Monty he’s got it dialed in now back to get the three under and can you believe it tie for the lead that was a better swing from Donald and this is going to be pretty good too yeah he’ll be delighted with that yes when you stand on that 10th T you better be in control of your golf swing cuz those last nine holes are brutally tough even with no wind yeah there’s quite a significant difference even in the yardage isn’t it the front Line’s about 300 yards shorter than the back nine and generally speaking the front’s downwind and and and then you’re going back into it on the way back running look at that I’ve never seen anyone running that was smiling and looking like they’re enjoying themselves it’s a fun run that’s an oxymoron South Africa’s Brandon Grace is underway just got into the top 10 in the world so he was definitely one of the play that were in the sights for this week but that was an uncharacteristic characteristic opening iron shot loves to play everything with a right to left draw in the middle of last year he started aiming a long way right and he’s you can see his shoulders are quite shut [Applause] and he’s got happy memories of Scott well Bitter Sweet I suppose memories of Scotland he was the leading Point scorer for the US team mclen Eagles but you’re at one there the rer Cup matches problems here for Mark leash he’s got some cables to move out of the way move the cables if the ball was to move you replace it everything might have got lucky just by the way that little practice swing there that he’s outside the the gors nasty stuff it’s a horrible vegetation doesn’t belong on a golf course I don’t think course if you never get to meet it your life will be much better it’s like wasps over this not much of a back swing he’s only kind of got about a foot he’s done well make good contact sit down it’s off the other side that was always the danger you’ve got to you got to make sure you hit it hard enough to get it to get it out there but then always a danger of going too long if you happen to catch all of it second shot into the par 4 7th for our leader Lee huge bounce off that’s off a rock or something there Dom yeah wow we that could be in real trouble he’s not sure what’s happened either stay tuned yeah we’ll come back there first of all off to the ninth fourth shot now for Mark leean quite a little slope he’s got to putt up here before it flattens out hurry go on not too bad Brandon Grace in the green side bunker at the second hole super must have been lying [Applause] okay Donald for birdie at nine and just slips it past so remain two under [Applause] Patrick Reed for birdie at the second seeing this might come slightly right to left at the end and it does and it fooled him a little bit so it’s a parar start for the American birdie putt for Colin Montgomery for to get into a tie for the lead yes three under PA five birdies after Double bogging the first hole getting up at 6:35 this morning the on almost the honorary starter first player to hit a shot in the Open Championship this year and Monty’s a top with Le and huge trouble back at the eighth at the seventh excuse me what a turnaround well done Monte lean to limit the damage to just the one drop shot two-time open Champion Podrick Harrington to get his round underway [Applause] not the side you want to be and that’s leean in for double bogey at nine drops back to even par well that was he’ll be shaking his head as he walks to the 10th T cuz it only gets tougher from [Applause] now blind t-shot the 10th you drive it up the hill is all covered in gors and there’s a television tower out there but or’ll see that house you want to take it about 20 yards to the left of that house it’s about 240 yard to carry to the Fairway Fairway moves from right to left very nervy t-shot made a lot easier today with no Breeze because normally the wind would be straight off the left roundabout there then yeah perfect t- shot second shots uphill to a very narrow green and a big drop off to the right hand side you can’t miss it right here at 10 very similar line to Monty and uh similar result as well still pleas just a three-wood for Lehman here and as we watch him thank you time to say good morning to Sam Torrance thank you Dom nice to be here gorgeous day out there and Colin Montgomery top of the board excellent did you get to see his first hole no I heard about it not obviously not the start he was looking for but a f quite fancy call in this week yes he could have still been there second shot Podrick Harrington not the best angle but only a short iron and good sensible [Applause] shot the Bree is just starting to pick up there the toughest back Nines in golf in when the wind’s blowing what this is Lee for par at seven and what a four remains tied at the top with Colin Montgomery we saw his ball take a big bounce and we heard that it got onto the path so he was very lucky Sayang he Lee can tell you Justin Thomas has started like a train Young American only 23 he has started with three straight birdies so he’s alongside Lee and Montgomery at three under par one ahead of Donald Palmer the Amer Champion scottt Gregory and Jim furick Richie Ramsay’s picked up an early birdie as well another Scott high up there on the leaderboard he played nicely last week at the Scottish open up at Castle Stewart tournament won by Alex norren early birdie for David lingmerth the US BAS swed trying to play his way into that Ridder Cup team it’s Rory skipping away from the practice putting green yes they go up over a bridge down onto the driving range it’s on the just across the road from the Marine Hotel 936 Rory gets underway in the company of Hideki matama and Bubba Watson F second to four keep trying to get left it’s got he wanted to keep coming left another yard no oh it’s done very well local knowledge Jim furick excellent result there couple under already that to go four under 10th Fairway second shop for lean that just he’s just got that hill in front of him got to ensure that he gets over doesn’t just skip it off the top of now I think 74 front yeah that’s right so two iron shots the right in a row for Mark Lehman the trouble be continues not really the place to miss either is it steep Bank down there wanty from the perfect spot last time we were here this was the third toughest hole on the course over the week not a gorgeous IR straight at it a little unlucky not to release up the green a bit but he’s got over his double bogey blues at the first five birdes since then top of the tree is this Luke McDonald when yes well we’re up in Scotland so his uh iron play has been less than Stellar so far this morning Sam he’s had a couple of decent ones but quite a few poor both ways and if you’re going to miss this green that’s where do you miss it left hand side not a difficult up and down there for Donald such a simple swing you wonder how it can go wrong Podrick Harrington all the way across this first screen for birdie another player who climatized himself last week at Castle Stewart in fact he really enjoyed the bad weather out there yeah what a difference a week makes last last week on Thursday the players could hardly stand up the birds weren’t flying this week it’s absolutely perfect Patrick Reed oh an eagle to for Patrick [Applause] Reed very reserved response there from Mr Reed kind of a just normal thing that happens to me so another look you see the pin over the mound on the right just a wedge perfect t- shot well the t- shot was very good this was perfect one [Applause] bounce no big deal I was aiming at the flag it’s the way your demeanor has to be in golf now we we were brought up with great like player punching there and running after across the green and you got excited and now it’s much better to stay an even Keel through thick and thin keep just keep the heart ticking over and enjoy your game and that is the first Eagle of this year’s Open Championship Lee t- shot at the postage stamp e after marvelous break back at 7 just on the front edge you probably take that four times on this H it’s only 100 odd yards it was treacherous well Leachman made a good job of his pitch up the bank there at 10 so about four and 1 half five four fet for par to stop the [Applause] bleeding Donald just looking to get it on the pting surface and run it out [Applause] Scott Gregory has birded the par five sixth hole his third gain of the day to uh join the leaders of course it was a wonderful performance last year from Paul dun the 54 hole leader as an amateur no birdie for Monte this will be a good warm up for Monty for next week’s Senior Open championship at Cary Luke Donald to save tar stay at two under sneaks it in the left Edge lean to steady the ship double at nine that’s for par at 10 that’s okay good save there from right of the green championship leader equal color Montgomery 300 through 10 they move over to one of the most intimidating t- shots on the golf course all blind the shot is on 11 used to be a par five in the old days so furic second this is this long Eagle chance it’s a little shy he’ll have that to get to three under it’s a lovely calm tranquil day today is the change very soon Alex snor nice t- shot at the par three fifth hole nice PAD as well took the lead into the final round last week and finished the job nicely show had a lot of character there you go there’s the t-shot 11 Railway all down the right hand side the gor in front of you you want the ball to finish you want to start it down the left and finish on that that crane you can see there in the difference in the distance or just to the right of that it’s a it’s very intimidating shot normally this would be back almost straight into the breeze 482 yards [Applause] ideal it’s not changed much over the years that swing very effective very simple you couldn’t teach That Swing Sam could you it’s not it’s a very individual action but it works straighter Monty a bit of a cutter meaning left or right flights Donald so Daisy it’s not Railway bound but there’s Heather and gors and everything there well it’s not pretty he’s got the ball so he can see it easily enough see be able to Sand Wedge out of there I’m not sure whether they’ve shortened that Gau up on the right hand side there it seems to me that in the past there was more of it went a little bit longer yeah I think you’re right way shoty hit there would certainly been in the winds years ago and the te fell the back must have taken some out looks perfect safely on board for Mark Lehman no Eagle but hopefully a birdie for Jim furick at the fourth he moves to three under birdie put now for sang he Lee from the front edge of eight it’s 20 Paces on so looking in the vicinity of 60 ft two puts would be good which he should be able to take care of that five players three under par Luke Donald with problems at the 11th after driving it into the rough and Patrick Reed with the Eagle at the third hole among those at two under spectator Village just down there in the foreground there the big TV compound and car parking areas and around we go to the practice range and what a mess they’ve made of it already former world number one Rory maoy wasn’t able to defend last year because of injury that’s quite incredible at such a tender age four major wins he wasn’t quite what sure what to do last year s he was obviously the the foot was the ankle was damaged he wasn’t sure whether to watch it on television or not in the end he did must the pro Tracer device so common now in professional well amongst the touring professionals anyway apparently earlier this week because all the players do have the benefit of this down on the practice range they were all trying to out drive each other on the uh practice range thank goodness they didn’t have it back in our day Sam or especially mine I’d be embarrassed to see how short it was color Montgomery second shot to 11 he trying to run it in bit of work left I played with an American on this ho in the open a number of years ago and I have to tell you this story very quickly a perfect drive on the left side of the Fairway we just watch Donald second here we said not a bad lie there able to advance it down so a good drive the left side of the Fairway they snap hooks his next into the wind so he hits a provisional hits out of bounds right hits another provisional out of bounds right it’s another provisional up 20 yard shortly so we go over into the winds and we find his ball I swear to you in a 3ot area completely clear right in the middle of all the G boies he gets in then he thins it out of bounds over the wall hits a small tree comes back top of the wall into play chips It Down Stone dead for a par it was a 15 turned into a par uh second shot there of Lee at the ninth hole and a good birdie opportunity young Scott Gregory he’s English he’s not a Scott his name is Scott just in case you got confused there it’s three under par going along very nicely indeed excellent shot there Justin Thomas for Eagle at number four having started with three straight birdies oh good effort he’s doing a shark though the shark in 89 open with six straight birdies on Sunday going on to shoot 64 equal lowest score here at Royal TR along with Tiger Woods in 197 97 how about that 23 yearold American playing in his first open furick for birdie at five sure he’s hit that hard enough or maybe he has lovely pace [Applause] perfect condition the golf course Very solid start from James is normal playing along alongside Justin Thomas Affy barnrat from Thailand for eagle that’s a way to get him back two at a time so back into red [Applause] figures very good player he he moved so well even for such a big BL he really moves he’s agile we’re hearing he was 300 to1 and whatever a cool commentator is not in the box at the moment but had a little wager on Justin Thomas to be first round leader 125 to one now Donald’s third to 11 great layup or great recovery shot sorry good chance to save power here with his short game this should be dancing round the hole very nice extremely difficult ho 11 birdie putt at the ninth hole to get to four under and Ty Justin Thomas good opening half though three underpar [Applause] got the Eddie monster side BS we saw the second of Gregor’s into the seventh this to join Justin Thomas no he’s pulled it shame that’s a very solid par and he’ll stay at three under par three birdies four pars quite a long way short Sam I don’t know whether he mish*t that shot or it’s hard to think that he misjudged the club by that much I think this hole has played very similar to the 17th at St Andrews it’s a tough tough t- shot get it in play and then just nudge it of 10 yard short of the green try and get your par he was given that a rattle Just a Touch Too Much there for Colin it’s a hole just a tiptoe you really it’s so easy to have a seven and a eight before you know what’s H you Marcus Fraser for birdie at nine he two out in three under par 33 well the scoring is as you would expect this morning on such a perfect morning lean from the front of the green at 11 for birdie should be a safe two putut you take four fours here and not not worry about playing the hole here’s our leader Justin Thomas four birdies to start and he’s playing the par three fifth now and he’s going to have another good look at birdie as well got his first PGA Tour win back end of last year down in Malaysia the CIMB classic there’s no no doubt about it he is a talent good luck there parut here for Luke Donald but that’s a a shot dropped fall back to one under was always going to be tough after that drive wasn’t it in fact he was a little bit lucky he wasn’t worse off only blemish today so far for Montgomery was on the first which he opening t- shot nice in the bunker double bogey six he’s come back very strongly he’s out in 33 he power the 10th this is for power and 11 just off the left Edge was a weak one he was up and looking at it before he almost hit it there no one knows this course better than Colin couple of times today just hasn’t quite got the ball to the hole double-edged sword that Sam sometimes isn’t it that when you’re from here from a course you have the local knowledge you’re expected to do well put pressure on yourself can work both ways now you know where all the trouble is for fichman the first power at the 11th tough little chip here at the fourth of Patrick Reed who that was very well played you see absolutely no chance of coming over the bunker and stopping it so had to play outright that’s what he was looking at there 10th T sang he Lee dead center perfect we’re the first group is walking to the 12th T in 2 hours and 25 minutes we might be on record Pace out there today better not speak too soon fantastic aerial views coming from the aircraft that will be circling around above us for the next 4 hours what a job now lean shot at 12 that’s fine should just hang on and after 4 hours the aircraft will come down and refuel and guys will have a bit of lunch they’ll head back up there again it’s the second significant change in Direction isn’t it the 12th hole the e goes back the other way and then this one also not quite opposite but almost opposite the 11th that’s quite a start 11 years since Montgomery broke 70 at the open I wouldn’t have believed that a perfect t-shot from Colin little bit more aggressive than lman go driver it’s 480 uh 30 yards this hole out there on Tuesday meloy had 80 to the flag Just Three Wood off the tea obviously just magnificent drive down right in the center of the Fairway now Donald with iron the short tracker shows us new things in golf I I I love the short tracker but nothing beats standing next to someone like Mich Roy or Dustin Johnson when the had driveway I mean we’ve been Pros all our lives we’ve never seen anything like that the problem is I can’t see the ball take off my eyes are that bad so I wish they had Pro tracker in real life but it is standing there watching those guys hit it Justin Thomas for five in a row we’ve seen everyone that’s been pin High there underere that putt from both sides so his first par to see you getting old way when you can hear your drives land last year’s BMW PGA Champion benan for Eagle at the par five fourth [Applause] he’s looking forward to playing in the Olympics both his mom and his dad were uh Olympians Jordan SP Justin Rose and Shane Larry about to get their first round underway been looking forward to this though this is game number 14 on the te from the USA Jordan SP now the world’s number three player he was the center of attention last year at St Andrews having won the Masters and the US Open he almost won the open as well [Music] [Applause] on the tea from England Justin Rose IR am for Rose when the wind gets up a we bit more they’ll see a lot of people having to go at this first Hall 367 yd you can see in the sign behind Justin but it’s definitely worth the risk when there’s enough wind behind you you can wide expanse to hit too struggling a little bit of late Justin p on the tea from the Republic of Ireland Shane [Applause] Lowry really like watching this guy play he just just goes about his business no fuss looks like he’s just come out of hibernation too doesn’t it good opening t-shot correct side of the Fairway seen a couple of drives off there already today Sam and they’ve got it down there the rough’s not terrible on that left hand side and with especially with that flag it leaves an easy pitch across the bunker but there’s talk this week of Dustin Johnson knocking it on the first three there’s been talk of that if the winds are favorable which they probably will be probably going to have to be into the first for him to hit driver this is Le that’s okay friendly bounce forward at 10 that’s an excellent shot now good chance for birdie Patrick Reed after holding his second shot back at three this for birdie and he’s within one Brash Young American ruffled a few feathers couple Years Ago by stating he’s top five player in the world hasn’t quite got to those Heights yet but he is a talent so Justin Thomas with the four straight birdies to start his round leads by one from Fraser Lee Gregory furick lmou and Patrick Reed then it’s Monty topping the group at two under benan with the Eagle at four four jumping to minus two Jimmy Walker has made a birdie at the opening hole and Brent snedaker who uh played very nicely down at Royal Liverpool a couple of years ago Justin Rose well back with 153 yards in made worse by the fact he’s in the right hand rough so smart shot is just at the corner of the grand stand well left of the flag just get it in the middle of the green [Applause] aome for mate done well from Justin very good shot but I love that swing so controlled just nudge It Forward couldn’t really attack the pin from the right rough Lowry last to go perfect angle for him [Music] [Applause] Jordan SP drives that club into the ground and beautiful shot lot of spin it’s been interesting watching him since the Meltdown at the Masters I just get he has won he won it uh in for worth a few weeks ago but I just get the feeling that he’s pressing too hard he’s because that would have done a lot of damage austa this year the leader Justin Thomas here Rex SS doesn’t hang back at all down the right hand side sh and fly means oh it’s Perfection Justin come back on The Fairway there you go yeah uh going back to speed what a year to follow the win incredible year last year Jim to uh join Thomas at four under disappointing what’s he found a [Music] hand a blue hand the aliens have landed he’s got a fright he’s off no more of that I tell you what You’ got to be scared of something to jump in there man’s best friend and they weren’t wrong I have three of them birdie put for AR at five let’s see if he can allow enough oh yes nice two some good path threes here at Royal trun this the postage stamp and then 17 is a brutal long path three just see those flags disappearing out of shot on the left hand side of your screen there’s definitely the breezes starting to pick up now which it was forecast to do Shane Larry went back over to the United States to defend his Bridgestone Invitational Crown what a win that was for him 12 months ago second at the US Open lead going into the final round there and expects to contend again in major championships said it was good learning experience for birdie [Applause] [Applause] now a chance for Patrick Reed to get the four on under at 5 Never Enough greens are absolutely perfect so if you don’t make putts today you’re never going to make them Ross Fisher Steve strick VJ sing next up lovely setting peace tranquility first here of the open this is game number 15 on the tea from England Ross fiser that was simple enough just a four or five iron for the players on the T from the USA Steve Stricker finished strongly at the Scottish open last week 49 years young now 12 top 10 finishes in major championships now the he or FG sing were exempt for this event both get in through the American Qualifiers see through the FedEx and Jude and v through the quick and [Applause] Loans on the T from Fiji VJ Singh three-time major winner he’s been going around for a long time not too many people have hit more golf balls in their life than VJ there’s another swing that hasn’t changed either long and L would still very Supple and has hit as many practice shots as anyone that’s ever lived VJ now Justin Rose good second to the first we’ve seen a lot Clos to the pin but from where his t-shot was this was a good shot to hear that’s not going to turn from there so just the par at the first for Justin 2013 US Open champion won it at Maran would love to win a second major championship Justin Thomas second to six just with a long iron dangerous pin position with flag just up near the leftand bunker wow now that could be anything we’ll just have to wait and see it came out I saw it come out of its pitch mark so it’s visible as we go to Jordan SP first screen can he get off to a flyer no yeah even when he won Colonial a few weeks ago Sam he he it was in he won ugly if you know what I mean 16 he held a bomb 17 he hit it over the back of the green chipped it in so it wasn’t a pretty win well they’re all pretty I never won enough to see an ugly one but they hold a good one on 182 yeah he is he’s been struggling all year I think that was very apparent at the final n at Augusta just a tap in here are four at the first for Jordan SP however he’s only 22 years of age another American Kevin Chapel to get to three under up [Applause] what’s he doing out there is he going to do some fishing it doesn’t look set up for fishing 936 Rory mroy gets going as I mentioned it’s quite a long walk from the practice ground you got to go across the road round the clubhouse down along underneath the tunnel Fisher second shot to one perfect angle just a wedge of maybe 99 12 ft for [Music] dir ideal t- shot for VJ 125 130 to go excellent our shot from VJ wind’s definitely picking up and Steve Stricker last to go and a two yeah wrong hole landed in the little sprinkler the world’s number one player Jason day of Australia he’s playing with Ricky fer and Danny Willet 925 tea time like Jordan SP Jason wasn’t too far away from the playoff last year at St Andrews as we go to Justin Rose playing his second shot into number two very very lucky it’s hard to believe that’s good shot in the end 18 years since we first saw Justin Rose as an amama finished fourth at burkdale the year that Marco Mira won wow still his best finish in an Open Championship as well probably the loudest Roar I’ve heard in golf when he hold his third shot to 18 extraordinary scenes No Mr Lowry perfect T you saw the caption there for aheun into the last round of the US op me what an astonishing feat I know he didn’t hang on to do it but that will stand him in in the years to come going to break a few eggs before you can make an omelette oh look at that’s ugly look at the LIE porched egg plugged buried can’t tell from the camera down but it’s not good shades of Monty at one Jordan spe second shot now not much going for him here in terms of angle in terms of coming out of that rough astonishing excellent stuff from spe another one of the Young Guns I reckon golf’s in a pretty good place at the moment we got so many good young players Jason day rcky Fowler Jordan SP matsy Yama that’s uh lot of good young players there’s the Masters champion as well Danny Willet so Justin Thomas up and the winds are little here right and chipped it down to here this for his birdie quite happy with two power here four under after four par five and he’s that for five on six Jim furick for birdie at number seven to move alongside Justin Thomas just the one major championship Victory to Jim’s name he’s had a few other chances as well and of course I forgot to mention Rory mroy another one of the Young Guns in the world this is game number 16 on the tea from England Danny will it it’s nice when you won a m should announce you Master’s Champion it’s only for a year I think you should yeah well one of the most uh deflating things in World of Golf is when you play at Augusta and they just announc your name on the te you know four please play away Sam TR four please play away so an aggressive mive play here for will it now the bounds all the way down the right the crowd like it so it didn’t carry the traps in the Fairway but it’s going to finish on the te from the USA magnificent Ricky Fowler I wonder if he’s got his ankle strappers on no he hasn’t good might come in handy if the wind picks up later in the week doesn’t he developed into a really good player had just been voted one of the most overrated players in golf and went the next week and won the PLAYERS Championship and hasn’t looked back since he won last year Scottish didn’t he up to Gin Ricky on the te from Australia Jason day the boy from bow desert I thought Greg Norman was the best driver I ever saw but this guy’s close way and he drives it just superbly that plays magnificently through the bag but he driving especially well Greg was the best driver with a wooden driver I ever played with yeah great with a wooden driver once they brought in the big head of drivers Greg lost and a big advantage that he had and off the Fairway my goodness could get a driver off the beway always remember the 14th that the Masters in Australia are used to peel that driver down there was the only guy that could ever get up to the Green in two now up on the the first screen this is Ross fiser to open up with a birdie just enough good start for a 35y old Englishman five times a European tour [Applause] winner Allison down at seven most southern part of the golf course this for birdie ooh just sneaks it in three in a row there for Allison trying to impress the captain playing with Darren Clark now we saw that incredible shot from the left off from spe missed the bunker by an inch great cam R here looks pretty straight maybe a touch off the right he thought he’d miss that he was right two pars to start for Jordan SP he doesn’t look the cool Cal and Collective player he was last year VJ he follows Ross Fischer in at the first one under through one [Music] second green Justin Rose this for birdie on had a got it just outside the hole it was never going to move much that’s a chance missed unfortunately we’re hearing this is for par for col Montgomery long way away well there you go thank you very much no pictures on the card go down as a power four yes the postage stamp Kevin Chapel making his Open Championship debut well that’s three in a row for him fourth birdie total and Chapel climbs alongside Thomas at the top Ricky Fowler second shot and good opening iron shot for Fowler what a group this is today wow and out following this group it’s van Phillips morning van morning Dom how are you very well how are you very well thank you the wind has freshened in the last 30 minutes or so Jason day’s got 107 flag here needs to pitch it somewhere around the hole as uh it will spin because Fowler’s shot just spun quite a lot so he can afford to pitch this quite a long way up to the flag exellent shots there from the world number one I [Applause] agree breakthrough major last year at the PGA Championship set records scoring records he is an exciting player to watch when things are going irons off the T for day and Fowler it was the driver for Danny Willet what’s his yardage van Danny’s got 18 yards to the flag so brilliant Drive I think he made the right decision taking the driver there because hady missed the green to the left with the flag position being on the right he still would have had quite a good opportunity to chip it close so good aggressive [Applause] play we’ve seen quite a few drivers off here already today but they’ve been in the leftand rough this is the first one we’ve seen Get It Up near the green and what a t- shot he had a bit of time off just recently he went to Wimbledon with his master’s jacket on he was at the Formula 1 grand prix on Sunday as well not the greatest effort here’s the moment all waiting for yeah a magnificent specimen r m he work from maybe five years old to get to this stage wats do not matuyama Patrick Reed to join those at the top at four under four under the last four holes for Reed day’s got about a 15t putt here really not much break at all Green’s running at just under 10 on the stimp so can afford to be aggressive could be the best putter in the game at the moment Jason day generally have to be doing something the best when you’re number one in the world this is game number 17 on the tea from northern irand Rory mroy Danny will can put a yard too short of the green I’m certain that Rory M can put this in the middle of the green so they’re still on the green why is he hitting he wants to get going he doesn’t want to hit the people on the green let me tell you they’ll not be too happy if there thumps do on the GRE left back or right on the tea from Japan hii matama star of Japanese Golf and only 24 years of age wait on the te from the USA BBA Watson two-time Master’s Champion Bubba Watson this is his eighth open appearance and he hasn’t handled it too well he’s missed four Cuts best finish tied 23rd back in 2012 so he hasn’t quite mastered Link’s golf dri is all round for this group and is waiting by the look of it for the green to clear I think he was deciding actually cut it in a draw and he has such an array of shots look where he’s a and this is he way down to CDE started straight it’s gone way left Michael right plenty of room from there it looks a lot worse than what it is in there that’s just wispy stuff look how cut mooy is now really worked on his physical appearance and strength well yes Bubba wasn’t waiting as this is Ricky Fowler Justin Thomas it’s another one in I don’t know if it’s for birdie it is for a birdie on seven these five under par now Justin leads by one from three players will it for his birdie at the first well that was a stalking drive from will it but it’s PA’s all round for Danny Willet for Ricky Fowler and for Jason day at that opening Hall I can tell you Scott Gregory has made a birdie over at the 10th hole so the Amer Champion has climbed alongside Kevin chapel and Patrick Reed one behind Justin Thomas in the early stages of the 145th Open championship Colin Montgomery who hit the opening t- shot today back to one under now started with a double bogy six fought his way back nicely over the rest of the outward nine five birdies to the turn he was three under but a b at 11 and another one at 14 has seen Monty slide back Paul dun now in the professional ranks as I mentioned earlier he did lead the Open Championship last year at St Andrews through 54 holes as an amateur Louis usas the 2010 open Champion winning Aton Andrews and then only just missing out last year as well to Zack Johnson in a playoff Jamie Spence is following this group Rory mooy Hideki Matt sayama and buba Watson morning Jamie morning Tom looking forward to this I’m glad they hit the driver down here I want to see them take these first few holes on they all certainly did that 350 to the front not a problem for these players and they’ve missed it in a good spot as well down the left hand side and Rory and BBA have pulled two pretty good lines here as well they’d be delighted when they saw those plenty of green to work with here for Rory nice cushion of grass under the ball which is what you want for this shot he’s going to throw it up in the end it just release to the flag got to be precise with this so he’s got to carry that bunker just short of the green what an error anyway just a bad shot but it looked like his line was between the bunkers so he’s he’s actually pushed it as well as duffed it yeah he just desil on that one Sam it was a good lie and Watson’s got a pretty good lie for the up slope help him get the ball up in the air [Applause] that’s how you do it e t Justin Thomas good smart shot only nine yds wide back there with the flag is a tiniest Target in golf hence the name postage stamp H’s drive up the seventh for Patrick Reed just a little flip onto the green already hold one second shot today that’s okay hold the second to the third for an eagle a couple more birdies at four and six HEI matama at the opening hole [Applause] excellent Jordan SPI third shot at three so he’s struggling a little bit the opening few holes Mel Roy’s third now at the first looks to be lying [Music] okay very nice NY little shot just slightly on the up slope that is the bunker that Monty was in earlier on today and it cost him a double bogey having a good look at this Bing his caddy nice to have a birdie part in the first as opposed to a par one that’s for sure it’s one of those holes you’re on the tea thinking birdie all day long but getting one of these bunkers as we just seen it’s not so easy the only thing with this part is he’s coming down the breeze and it is freshening as van said that just makes a difference on these PS [Applause] well it’s another three there at the first it’s the I’m surprised it’s uh 12th but mind you we haven’t got players all the way through they’re only mody and them are only through 14 holes up ahead now P put for mroy just a little bit of right to left here for Rory one or two changes of grip with the Ping stroke over the last 6 eight months or so but he seems to have settled back to the more conventional and finally matama who’s also off and running with a birdie at the first [Applause] hole Thomas for his birdie at eight to get to an amazing six under get there oh it was tracking but our championship leader has got through all the scoring holes at five under now he’s got some golf to play Jordan SP for par at the third hole [Music] [Applause] all passs to start with for Jordan Patrick Reed at seven to join Justin Thomas yes B2 at five under [Applause] par two young American players at the top of the leaderboard that’s all the guys that are waiting to tea offer hoping that the breeze doesn’t pick up later in the day they want to get out here and join the party as we go to the second tea and matsy armor [Music] 250 yards to the first bunker down the left hand side here at two first one that’s in play anyway for these players all you can see of this tea is a mass of bunkers at various stages down down this hole no point taking this green and off the te it’s 30 yards longer than the first sit down uhoh and for a left hander that is not good I don’t mean the shot he h i mean the LI he left with extremely difficult where that’s finished for BBA but wishes hit driver now sir with an IR just wants it about 250 if he can safely in the Fairway perfect for meloy really Keen to get back to the top of the tree get back to number one in the world just as Keen as Jason day is to keep him out of there oh Patrick Reed on eight just a a little Chip Shot I thought that disappeared into that front bunker but obviously it didn’t great start from Patrick re last six winners at the open here we’re American looks a bit like Justin Johnson doesn’t he but it’s not it’s Kevin Chapel four under only one off the lead just come up Shy at the 10th there so he’ll need to Chip and put for his part runner up at the Players Championship runner up at Bay Hill both times behind Jason Day Kevin Chapel Brandon Grace one at through the first seven t- shot at eight trying to hit just a low draw into the back left hand flag oh magnificent was looking good there last week in Scotland and fed over the weekend that’s a quality Iron [Applause] shot and not the best start this morning all pars the first six but a good Birdie on seven for Brandon great chance on eight this b 300 wonderful part it’s just 100 yeah of course 20 odd yards the players must wonder when they come here what all the fuss is about well just wait incredible but very much like the famous One AUST of the 12 he’s pushed that needs to watch coffin bunker on the right that’s okay a yard further than that was in it lucky lucky it’s refreshing though isn’t it just goes to show that you don’t need 200 yard plus par 3es to make play players think yeah that always drove me nuts in the states at the end just about every part three on most courses is 200 yards plus perfect t- shot for mat Yama this flag on the front it’s only on nine Paces he’s left himself 153 so he’s far enough back middle of the fair with a perfect Li he should be a to get some spin but he’ll need it to stop it near this flag it’s okay it’s better off in the bunker than out of it perfect most magnificent sand you have ever played out of yeah you close to fui just a big wedge trying to put as much spin on this as he can oh that’s going to be an awful one as well I’m not sure they’ll be able to get both feet in the The Bunker buers play quickly so everyone’s on the beach it’s a sunny day why wouldn’t they be not where you want to be though on the golf course Todd Hamilton did say that his strategy very much in 2004 when he came and won here was to stay out of the bunkers he only hit two bunkers the whole week SP at the fourth the first par five yeah someone asked me last week what the strategy was here at trun and I just said you got to stay out of the the Fairway traps no oh he’s flared that oh well finished up great just wasn’t what he thought of what he saw bad fora in the nicest sense of the word he’s a he’s a freak isn’t he a golfing freak anyway anyway no one moves it as much as he does wonderful imagination phenomenal distance now Justin Rose second to the par 54th lovely t-shot just trying to draw in just [Music] 197 so will only be a six iron excellent shot beautifully played not for [Applause] Eagle not a great lie here for Rory have to take lots of sand just dab it out like that well two sandies for Rory first two [Applause] holes no green to work with here for matama and he’s coming off the shoulder of the bunker as well would like to put some spin on it but I’m not sure he can from this light keep that face wide open well that was a [Applause] long American Jimmy Walker this for birie on five this to get to three under very nice straight in the middle co-leader Justin Thomas second shot into number nine look to be lying okay we gr is away for a cup of tea welcome in Dame Laura Davis welcome in hello yes thank you I’m looking forward to this lovely conditions out there Laura I know you’ve been out wandering about perfect day for golf yeah lots of birdies few Eagles thrown in Bubba here is for car didn’t look very pleased with his second shot but it’s looks pretty good to me that’s a good save that nice nerve setle Patrick Reed Infamous postage champ this to get to 6 under not quite hit it good line but not quite HEI also to say his bar at the second yeah good confident part so he stays one under meloy here very good steady start probably would have wanted at least one Birdie on those first few hes though we saw spe second into the fourth this is for his Eagle across the green touch from the right three pars to start with as he got it there as he got it there no straight in but uh a little short he should get his first birthday of the day so people will wonder at home I’m sure watching is it is there is it a big adjustment for especially for the players who are used to competing on the PGA tour where I don’t know the stimp is probably regularly over 12 to come over and start competing on greens that are a couple of feet slower of absolutely D good point point it’s these greens are still fast but they’re not American fast but they’re different greens you know the Links golf the greens are normally just the end of the Fairway cut shorter you know so they look so different but they putt very quickly at times it’s a solid start for SMI one under after four two bunkers down the left and a ditch at 280 it’s an IR here from Matti smart play flags at the back as well so you can get to it just got to get on The Fairway B’s got the big stick out isn’t he yeah can see yet Jamie I think he has this would be fun not sure he needs to do this but uh he’s going to crack it have a crack at it Bubba does it his way doesn’t he doesn’t worry about everyone else he’s a bit like you Laura I’m not as Brave as he is yeah you are I like his driver though nice pink driver oh you like that I like that it’s the wrong way around me wouldn’t it I think it does it’s a bit too masculine for you Jamie well hold on let’s uh let’s see what happens here [Applause] wonderful work by the cameraman carried the ditch by about 70 Ys right in the middle of the green right in the middle of the green hello hello that’s why use driver Jamie that’s unbelievable that’s babba I played here in 1997 I don’t remember anybody hitting driver off this team doing that but this this surely this is just rude I mean Watson’s just knocked it in the middle of the green into the group in front who are still part M always is equally as long and he’s going with driver and just hitting with no care whether he knocks it on the green yeah you’re right straight one he’s on they must have called him up Sam surely that’s just bad itate isn’t it laa it’s just as you say bad etiquette just caught the r Rory Darren Clark famously hit two hour and out of bounds when leading 97 I think that was a long time ago it was 1997 runner up in the end with yesper panovic behind Justin Leonard now Ricky from the back of the third green lovely technique there just bash down on the back of the ball first bounce check and then there you see all the [Applause] result just see here really pounds down on the back of the ball get get that generate that little bit of spin there it is that’s just pure F you can’t teach that I don’t think here class as well so he drove the green here this is for Eagle it’s not far away it’s no it’s just short that’s a lovely birdie for D though this is what we expect these first three four five holes loads of birdies do eagles Bree is just up enough now they’re going to start going for the green then in about two hours time they’ll turn back into the breeze and that back nine it can be a monster ninth hole Justin Thomas to get to six underpart jump clear at the top [Applause] again Justin rosev Regal pretty good second shot to get it this close bit of a misread you’d have to say there cuz uh didn’t know that long think Justin might have a good week this week he seems very calm few weeks off with that slight injury should be fresh Justin Thomas on Ninth green this for 31 five under lowest front n so far this week a great start third Fairway second shot for matama he’s got 152 to the flag but this green slapes away from you so there’s no need to stop it he’s got to be bold here and Pitch it in the flat down the bottom and hopes to get some Spin and he wants to keep it left of the flag that wind’s just coming off the left as well now steady shot there it’s got Swedish colors on for some reason I’m not sure about that 10th T Justin Thomas with an iron [Applause] sand yeah got it plenty of Club too up the hill at the back Patrick Reed coming out of the rough at the ninth unsighted for his second shot but giving it the twirl that’s always a good sign isn’t it he’s he’s been a bit unlucky there very big first bounce CU he was in the rough so should be a pretty straightforward up and down for him though four four away at the top sorry Jamie that’s right just had a look up the green Rory waiting for that fourth T to clear he’s walking back to his ball now Dom he has a perfect lie Jimmy he yes it’s not an easy one though Sam no green yes very difficult he he could run it in round the right hand side but I don’t think he’s going to do that he’s got the Loft in his hand he’s got to be very accurate with this and that shot he had on the first will be in his head so he needs to throw this way up in the [Music] air he’s got a jumper three played no greens hit yet for maroy so a few poor shots bunker at the first bunker at the second over the back of the Third Jordan spe here one under pass steady start really ripping through that one seems to like it lovely shot use the wind put it out there a little bit to the right and let the wind bring it in it’s not going Rory’s way at the moment s but that was a that was a tricky one I got to say I’m not sure he could have stopped it out of that live with that flag just get out of position here at TR and doesn’t matter how close you are it’s difficult to get the ball in the green he’s got a chance from here actually it’s not too bad all the locals are apart from a long way off the green here R’s ball is pretty straight and then when he gets onto the green it’s a little bit right to left great evation for Bubba not surprise after that one right come on Rory lovely cut there from [Applause] Rory back to the 50 Justin Rose it’s 22 on today nine off the right hand side so his back R was is gorgeous Excell iron shot from Justin lovely swing time isn’t it Justin’s could watch it all day so simple too but all the good swings always look simple that’s very true CU they make it effortless I can tell you the stands are pretty full out here as well so many people so early on in the day mat ymer up the hill good opportunity this just got to make sure he hits it decent effort probably just a slight misread Green’s rolling I think we’ve heard 9.11 or something so not that fast so Justin Thomas’s t-shot at 10 this is his second quite a long iron he’s a long way back is that strange Choice hitting an iron off the te do you think Sam yeah it’s I’m not the wind oh well it certainly is now laa that was a poor one yes it’s it’s a long hole 10 you and you’d want to be up there as far as you can that’s the fair we looking back C it yeah well you’re not going to like it when you see it Justin it’s up over the bik left and the thick stuff it’s straight up there for Bubba be noise if this goes in just the birdie for babba two under after three three good start from Bubba Jordan Speed here good birdie chances to get to two under that’ll be three off the lead if he can make it at this early stage doesn’t like it not putting quite as well as he was on those that golden year last year is he Sam no every party hit last year was either in or lipped out this year they’re coming close with not anything like the consistency of last year Ricky Fowler here going for this PA five and two 215 yards out what do you think he’s hitting probably no more than a five or a six if that 56 AR don’t breathe here 2p5 trying to run it in there pitched a good 30 yard shot of the green but very well played shot from Ricky Fowler yeah perect tow Danny will it here from 218 yards no chance of getting near this flag they’ve tucked it right behind the front left bunker just needs to stop that’s fine he’ll be putting from there need a bit aiming in that front right hand corner as van said no chance of getting nearer that pin bit of strategy there just play out front right two put for your birdie D’s got 184 here again the RNA obviously not wanting a repeat of Gary evans’s albatross in 2004 that pin is impossible to get close to Van have you been up close with Dave before you’ve seen the height he hits his irons it’s extraordinary isn’t it I haven’t but uh we’ll need to see that on this shot if he’s going to put this close very unlucky just hit on the down slope pretty much like you said you can’t go at the pin um that drive just over 370 yards I’ve just worked out if he had 180 it’s a different game isn’t it absolutely Laura it’s uh I mean I’m hitting the ball fell never did I quite enjoy it I think the the the advances with the technology is fantastic cuz it’s you against the course it’s the same for everyone as we go to re on nine over the back big swing off the right come over a little Hill here and then come back to the right and great try going along nicely Patrick five under par today that was to go out in 30 well here we go Bubba down the par five just a couple of bunkers down the left Lura to be careful of I think he’s going to knock it past those straight down wind we’ve got shot tracker here Jamie that’s going straight down the middle and presumably very long when it’s just short of the green I think that’s the straightest shot I’ve ever seen Bubba I was desperate to see the short track with Bubba Watson cuz he he hooks at or slice is at normally 60 70 yards every hole but that one Arrow straight and perfect is that an iron I see for maty armor back there it is an iron Jamie very surprising do you think he can reach in two yeah he can if just just wants to keep it short the bunker 300 to the left hand bunker and he’s obviously got that in his head he knows he can reach from there two ways of playing you won’t be hitting a nine on the back nine L is his third perfect t- shot there from matuyama judged it beautifully pumped this down the right hand side of the Fairway little bit of draw might be a little bit to the right this one going have to do well to kick back into the Fairway just did actually as good an angle as you’re going to get to this pin if he’s far enough down he might be able to try and Pitch it just right to the bunker this is where de ball finished at the part 54th he had to go there bit unlucky van hit the down slope of the Trap but as you said he should never been at the pin no that’s right and the lie he’s got at the moment isn’t too bad it’s just in that rough at the back there but he’s got a good chance with a flag being so far away from him so he’s got lots of green to work with so I wouldn’t say it’s really difficult I’d say it’s a medium difficulty shot little bit clumsy there van he won’t be pleased with that I wouldn’t have thought no I expected him to leave that short of the hole if anything he’s made a bit of a cardinal sin there almost chipped it off the green Justin Rose that gorgeous t- shot not much swing either way here thinks he needs to be a bit aggressive for this one keep it on its line yeah just dies off just a par for Justin just a bit of pace there wasn’t it it needs to be a little bit further past and I think that would have gone in yeah he’s got a double breaker here starts right to left and comes back left to right at the end it’s about 45 or 50 ft all about Pace they’ve all been leaving that one a bit short and obviously that’s from 50 ft left it a good 10 ft short a little bit yeah saw Reed’s first put at nine for birdie this is the return effort for par this to go out in 31 Justin Thomas already did that very good from Patrick Reed so three birdies one Eagle five on the par top of the board there’s Justin Thomas after his wild second shot this is his third have to hack this one out not a bad effort but still going to have a good 25 20 ft for bir for his par there Ben on wonderful second into nine here this the go 33 3 under well done two birdies an eagle and one bogy eight and he’s out in 33 three under Jason day here looking over his what got a good 12 13 ft after that for him a very poor chip yeah he’s got a very tricky put here he’s coming up and over a little Ridge really tough to get the speed should be a bit of right to left break in it can’t see leaving this one short be a bit annoyed after those two good shots he hasn’t hit it this screen’s a bit slower but everyone’s leaving their p short on the fourth after the drive they said just a nine hour into the green or something it’s a five for Jason day stays at one under par but very disappointing it’s almost like a bogey isn’t it right here’s our joint leader trying to stay that way it’s a decent putt slight misread but it’s all about the second shot there you can’t blame the putter now Danny will it that’s better Danny that’s better birdie at three birdie at four will it goes to two under solid start here’s the different strategies you got mat arama down the left there he’s left himself a long way in but I suppose he’s looking at that pin position thinking a long iron pin high right 25 ft You Can’t Go For It Anyway so two different ways of playing they hit his drive his t-shot 279 he’s now got 277 so I’d imagine be the same Club Jamie absolutely Sam my thoughts exactly I’m just going to try and chase this into the front of the green just going to be careful the two bunkers left and right straight down wind though beautifully done there he is with his nice Eagle chance so it just shows everyone looks at it a little bit of a different way he’ll probably be closer of all three guys now well he’s he’s closer than anyone today I think at that hle I’ve just thought though Bub’s hitting next so it could Anything Could Happen a long way down the fairways Rory’s left himself one 196 good angle he’ll be doing well to get inside that one of that’s Yas oh that was Perfection from Rory excellent shot I hate to say it’s the first green hitting regulation but is that to go too under toughest t-shot on the course all the players have been saying and the caddies are a bit worried about this one as well and I think that is dead you don’t bloody Know It Bubba just a S8 hour n hour into this part five is’s now that is how you go out the pin but you have to hit your drive 370 yards so not long to wait before you do that that was magnificent from Bubba Reed now you can just see the flag in the distance just left of our camera Tower beautiful strike but it looks like it might be drifting a little left J just off the edge but that for him should be a very easy straightforward probably putted actually but uh could chip it speed second to six Now power five on the front nine perfect t- shot about three or four iron try carry Ys little right go a little right is saying bunker front left oh oh I see said the blind man he wanted to go right to hit the bank to bounce left local Knowledge from the American fantastic shot into the power five that for Eagle oh here we go going it’s a bit long out there is it going to go in there Happ as Larry I heard just thought him when they saw him trotting along the beach this morning that he wasn’t going to play tennis he was just walking his dog how Fowler hearing Dani Willet through the bike just the six iron another excellent iron shot will it be no but magnificent from Fowler ready two under that to go three under Patrick Reed now opting to chip this one was a little bit quick that stroke left it a bit short suggest that’s not his best shot now he’s going to blame the LIE we always do that it’s never us always the ground I love the caddy one that we birded the first six and then he three potted the seventh huge galleries here you got the fifth grand stand there by the te to the right of this green as well so they can get a good view a lot of people out here now lot more grandstands these days we need them all the people mat armor two Super Shots to get here in two this is just going to come off the shoulder of the bunker a little bit left to right they can’t hide the flags these quality players just misleading that when everyone’s sort of under pacing it and just missing it to the right it’s obviously a very tricky read what we saw he’s going back towards the tea here Justin Thomas I think we’re going to see a lot of that on 11 this week Sam don’t you if they find it I think he’s very lucky to find that yeah it’s it’s a very difficult hole you used to play five wood off the tea down the left cuz it was a par five and just keep it in play little bit of fade on this one for Rory as well great chance easier part than mat arms he hasn’t got to worry about that knuckle of the bunker that’s typical isn’t it that one doesn’t move so it’s it’s obviously just a very tricky part a slightly different angle that Rory had and it stayed straight it’ll be his first tart of the day but it’ll also be his first birie of the day one under after four for maoy when he Taps this one in I’m being presumptuous but good call Sam he went out on a Lim there didn’t you D it was a tricky one to read but I thought he would get it day’s got about a 35 to 40 foot part here it’s a bit of a roller coaster with a Swale in the middle and a good 3 or 4 feet of left to right break not one you’d expect to Ho he is the best putter in America right now mind you bit of a sloppy start for Jason this morning that’s not going to please him either very frustrating when you know you’ve got a go to a flyer here’s babba Watson for Eagle probably the only player in the field that can actually go for this pin and stop it it’s really testing them this green isn’t it has obviously put this pin in a very dodgy spot yeah this is straight downhill don’t see a lot of break in this again very very slippery PR part lovely Pace on that one not quite reading it but nonetheless a very good part and a good [Applause] car oh was saw Thomas out the winds on 11 this is his third shot and this is a dangerous shot too out of bounds right more bushies left that looks a more POS finish should be pretty straight straight into the bunker not too bad there though up and down for his bogey just one loose shot he’s got about six feet here still breaking off his left wind off his right which will probably play a factor in his mind the wind can affect putts here at linkx courses so again real pressure part for him to haul in the early stages of this round he doesn’t miss many of those that’s uh back to level par now and he’ll be fuming after the two shots here in the par five didn’t get up and down and now that so testing times for the number one player pck read this for par on 10 no and he too like Justin Thomas Bogie’s the 10 so four under leads Thomas Reed and Walker Ricky Fowler here after that great t- shot this for a birdie oh my goodness I think he’s got more left than he had then he’s pin positions are certainly testing the boys this morning wouldn’t have got much price on that would you Jason day and uh Fowler there both missing those two parts very disappointing part Jimmy Walker on the seventh I’m afraid I gave this one away is this for birdie to tie at the top never anywhere else lovely birdie from Jimmy Walker he goes to the top Thomas Reed and Walker all four on the par well straight down win the fifth and me and Mortal golfers would just play middle of the green but this fell hits it so high can’t be more than a 79 here 206 lovely shot there from [Applause] Bubba Jimmy Walker the infamous postage stamp just a wedge back into the breeze p is a little bit on the left half oh well we’re going to see them in that bunker this week plugged and then I’ll tell you what it is no fun that’s going to be very difficult for Jimmy Walker and that’s from a good lie well he’s out a CER mat arm won’t be the same club though watch the paws at the top of the swing just double crossed himself a bit there I think he was trying a nice fade and he’s just turned it over and there’s your extra distance should get that up and down but not a very good shot it’s not the easiest of par 3es Laura with this winds coming a little bit off the right hand side actually off the C now is it picking up Jamie it looks like it’s picking up a little bit a little bit yeah we need a breeze don’t we around here test him a bit lovely shot there from [Music] Rory just looking at our computers in the comp room here I can see four Bogies on the on the front nine on the back nine I can see 15 already now Justin Thomas he’s in here in three that’ll be an awfully good par and it is well well well Justin Thomas just made bogy at 10 looked like at least bogy on 11 but he’s hold his bunker shot and it’s aart if his t- shot goes any further it’s a triple isn’t it amazing good bunker shot though Jordan Speed chance to get to three under played it in off the bank again short just not hitting them hard enough you come off that US Open a few weeks ago and you look at these perch and you’re just thinking I can’t hit this hard that’s a trouble adjusting I know they’ve been here a week and more some of them but it’s still hard yeah that’s one of the key things are doing The rer Cup when they play over he has slow the greens down immediately to confuse them slightly now Jimmy’s not even thinking about going for this pin he going to leave himself a good 30 foot for par but the Sens of play early on in the championship no point taking unnecessary [Applause] risks okay Kevin Chapel this is for Birdie on 12 bogy 10 11 he’d be looking to hold this one and he has he gets it back to three under after 12 good birdie there it is amazing Monty here needs this one nice power P let a few slip on the last few holes as we all expected to be honest though it’s uh very tough once you get going into this back nine nice way to finish look at that that’s what everyone’s been saying three under going up and three under three over coming back so I think after that start Sam you’ll be pleased with that won’t he oh absolutely six at the first it was a horror story now Jimmy Walker with in the Trap four under par few this postage stamp it does come from there it looks a bit firm won’t take the break good part though size of that marker he’s in trouble with his next PL don’t he and the old staming are going to have to chip it over it Babar R staring out over the F of Clyde there lovely day and look at the beach wouldn’t go swimming in there Bubba bit C Mai Yama left to right up over a hill and then it comes down towards the flag I thought he might have chipped that over that little swell but he decided to P here we go for the bogey put here Jimmy Walker yeah after the t- shot that’s all he was looking for so job well done move on so Thomas and Reed still at the top Jamie Donaldson among those whove moved it to two underpower along with the Frenchman Victor duon both men who played for Europe in the Ryder Cup matches atan Eagles a couple of years ago great chance here for Rory R Edge looks like he just pulled that one a little bit didn’t look like a smooth stroke to [Applause] me a PO t- shot from speed here at s but this is what Seaside golf’s about he had just carry that bunker just in front of him there where we nudge let it run all the way up so he tried to do as he pulled it carried it too far it’s not done badly though any time you hit the ball off the Fairway and trun you’re happy to get on the Green back to number five Matt Yama for his part not much on it it’s incredible this screen we’ve seen so many Miss Pats must be unbelievably difficult to read because uh they can’t all be doing it so bad speaking of Reed here he is magnificent t-shot at 11 just pulled this left just trying to punch it in there the out of bounds just right of the green that’s not too bad this is such a severely difficult hole 11 if you offered that to players four times this week get it within five yards of the green they probably they would take it Jason day on board the par five sixth hole this 6 Oney monster and off the club straight away going to be pretty straight but we just out to [Applause] heel that’s 360 370 387 I would say that’s gone imagine if he kept two hands on it it would have been amazing it’s another birdie for babba Watson and he joins Thomas and Reed at the top it’s United States threesome leading the way at Royal trun and that’s three in a row as well for Watson what a start a read here third shot to 11 Sam was saying take a PA take oh nearly had a birdie bit of a t for his part but I’m sure like Sam said he’ll be happy with that confirmation of Watson moving alongside Reed and Thomas at the top another American Kevin Chapel topping that group at three under par in fact it’s looking very good for the United States at the moment but we’ve come to expect that at Royal trun over the years the last six Open winners here have all hailed from the United States speed to under through sixth VJ here birdie chance on number six playing some good goal recently on both the [Applause] tours Champions Tour and America The Joint leader Justin Thomas second to 12 stay right stay right stay right he’s shouting no he’s pulled it oh good kick though good kick that’s not too bad it’s not as flat as it looks on your screen that’s quite a severe little slope he’s got to come up but only 25 ft shouldn’t be a problem to him going down the sixth Fairway it’s not a bad drive from Danny Willet but it’s an absolute monster from Jason day 387 yards that was uh that was inspired Sam so second here for will it this looks magnificent in there with SH tracker and it is wonderful shot from Daniel Willet [Applause] there to the 11th and Patrick Reed to save his par well done [Applause] here goes Jason day after that monster t- shot probably going to fly this right to the front edge of the green try and get a bit of spin on it might have just leaked it a bit left too good almost too good good Eagle chance there Jordan spe across the seventh green quite got to git with the greens yet Jordan couple under through S in fine shape in fine shape mroy about to let fly at the six now that didn’t look very nice knowing the strength he can probably muscle it down there somewhere near the green but I doubt he can reach he’s quite a long way back no run at all matama that wonderful pronounced pause at the top of the Swing can correct so many simple faults there it is Boom delicious [Applause] problems for Kevin Chapel passing for par now at 13 one of our joint leaders now on 12 not going with a driver doesn’t need it just get one down there in play give yourself a good look at the green seems to like it it’s not too bad you can still see might have trouble getting it close to the pin but certainly he’s not going to miss the green I was quite surprised that Ricky’s pitch shot there really wasn’t that difficult from 93 yards he’s lost it way to the right and short he’s left him a really tricky PT it’s about 40 ft again up over a rise in the beginning and then down the other side towards the end so another really difficult put to get the speed it seems like there are no easy Parts at Royal TR this morning from what I’ve seen Ricky Flur just flower Fowler that was a bit like Luke McDonald earlier on this morning sorry about that we should be AIT awake by now it’s Ricky fer that’s all right petal thank you dear just touch off the right for Ricky here played the hole badly bar five no it went right we both misread that that’ll just be for a par for Ricky e t Jordan SP L he seems to be I’ve watched a lot of his iron shots he seems to be him in miles right yeah I don’t know if it’s cuz they’re going down that side and he’s trying to use the wind or what but he’s uh so well that’s a very good shot but they’ve turned into the wind now so maybe that’s not not going to affect him quite so much but yeah he he doesn’t seem quite right at the moment but he’s still too under but we’ll see what happens when he turns into those into the wind holes Jason day here really good Eagle chance not a bad P but left himself a little bit for the birdie that’s a nice streak isn’t it five top 10 finishes he seems to be up there every single week let alone the majors he’s never out the top 10 anymore and we don’t need to wonder why with a swing like that physique like that putt like that chip like that bunker shots like that he’s pretty good Jason T isn’t he not bad is he I guess that’s why he’s number one in the world are you his agent are you bigging him up a bit here Sam no no I’m just looking for contracts now Danny will it just off the right Edge oh so just started far enough right there for Danny that was for Eagle that’s just a tap in birdie for Danny Willet and he goes to three underpar Justin Thomas to stay at four under at the 12 yep well done he 11 and 12 okay and just to emphasize what you were saying there Laura on the front nine only two holes are playing overpar on the back nine every single hole except the last is playing over its part that’s amazing everyone predicted it it was it was obvious but now you’re actually seeing it this though for birdie there it is two good pouch from there the start on the start of the back line alone holds 10 11 and 12 last time we were here were ranked one two and three not in that order but they were the toughest three holes on the course over the week Jimmy Walker to move into a tie for the lead with a birdie P at the ninth it was a very nice putt I think he thought he had it I think we all thought he had it still a very good start took him 187 tournaments on the PGA tour to get his breakthrough win he hooked up with Butch Haron who as he has done with so many other players seem to inspire him then he won three times in the 2014 season here’s Reed saw his T-shirt he a bit unlucky running through here chopped this one out he’s already hold one shot that looked pretty good too very nice from there he got a good break got a good lie but he’s taking advantage Mattia second at six Rory m is laid up out of the rough having pushed his Drive 260 yards to go here into one of the bunkers but that actually if there is such a thing that’s pretty easy up and down I’d say so it’s not the worst result as long as it didn’t plug we can’t quite see it to the 14th par three Kevin Chapel to get to three under uphill right in the middle as well so it’s been an interesting back nine so far boies at 10 and 11 then the birdie at 12 dropped a shot at 13 and he’s got that back at the 14th well 392 yd drive leavs him just over 200 or buba oh this might well a little B long been unlucky there we saw the shot earlier that bounced down and in that’s just gone that that’s not the worst leave though good chance to get that up and down for yet another birdie for Bubba to the eighth the postage stamp good t- shot from Jordan spei chance for a [Applause] two Sam was say earlier just not got to grips with the reads on the greens which is very unusual for him cuz he’s normally dialed in and and it’s the line rather than the length that seems to be getting him well for two years virtually we saw him ha everything didn’t we I suppose in inevitably that cannot go on it’s just not human Thomas Reed Watson still on top for underpar then it’s Chapel in the group at minus three third shot for Rory at the sixth remember he pushed his drive into the rough so he’s laid up to H so one great thing about Link’s golf the ground is so hard you can just chop into the back of it that lovely sound it’s there’s nothing better than hitting a good iron off a links course he liked it shot it forward as you saw he was right at his Peak wasn’t he when he won down at Royal Liverpool it’s been a bit of a it’s not exactly a struggle it’s unfair to say that for Rory in 2016 but uh just the one when so far coming in Ireland that was a magnificent one though Ross fer here this to go four and right in the middle very nice W Grady is back with us hello Dom Laura it’s been an exciting morning of golf hasn’t it on this perfect day good to see you Laura good to be working with you again yes very nice been a long time yeah it has one of the true Legends in golf you are great to have you back just an iron Here For Speed at n 270 y to the first bunker down the left hand side ideally you want to be on the right hand side of the Fairway heill blocks the view of your second shot but that’s moving perfectly it is lying nicely Laura for matama I think this is an eight out of 10 up and down this one maybe even a nine out of 10 clumsy for me but that nearly went in good technique to smash down the back of the ball as much spin as he could get Patrick Reed for birdie good three now they turn to the right some big par fours coming up really strong finish here at Royal TR and Reed leads on his own quietly going about his business but but now I think this is his third Eagle pad of the day in the first six holes he drove the par 4 second and he’s had two nice Eagle chances on two par five so making it look a little bit easy at the moment it’s going to have to go a bit won’t be pleased with that at all there he is talking away he loves to chat to himself Bubba no one else listens to him so he’s got to talk to himself Fisher on the eth T oh stay there okay he’s got 65 ft left for his two back to the sixth maoy with a chance to get two under there’s the graphic but obviously he didn’t play last year because of the injury so if he wants to do that he’s going to have to start hauling a few of these PS been a little bit sloppy early this [Applause] morning get there nice four two underp for maoy here the first time I saw him I think was in 2007 when Podrick won it Cari that’s the first time I saw maoy and he was special when and he still is now he’s like you Laura he likes a kickabout yeah I I ruptur by a kill he not ruptur it as badly as he did but yeah I had two years with a bit of a problem because of playing football so uh it’s not good for golfers and do you still play I haven’t played for two since I did it I was warned off so uh yeah getting a bit old for that now the injuries come about a lot quick a lot more not a bad cricketer either are you you play the caddy caddy girls down there at Royal times used to take a few catches bowl a few overs y so mat Yama for the up and down he was up and out of it quickly wasn’t he he wasn’t he’s just bobbing the club up and down I’ve not seen that for many players that’s it’s obviously something he does before every Pat but yeah it’s unusual clearly works though they are the world’s very best players say hi to Uncle Bob tuy down there in Australia who runs the Australian ladies Masters has done for since Adam was in shorts and you’ve been down there and played that almost all every year haven’t you I missed the first two but I’ve played the last 25 or something I think so yeah Bubba now for a birdie putt to get to five under and join Patrick Reed at the top great effort five under through six well is this the year he hasn’t had good pedig or good record in the Open Championship Bubba Watson missed the cut four times best finish of 23rd so off to a Good Start 13th second shot here for Justin Thomas they left back right hand hole location he was shouting at it but that’s a very good shot long quite a long way back with a long iron there beautifully flighted stopped it quickly into the wind really interesting the way he plays these shots Laura very dead arm he doesn’t get a lot of wrist coock little Steve Stricker is it is and that’s a very poor shot for Jason just trying to get a little bit of spin on it wasn’t he didn’t quite catch it flush a little bit low on the club I mean the form there is all good he just might might have led a little bit too much came out lower than he expected very tight the turf here but magnificent a hit off Patrick Reed has reached the 13th T drif might have just come down into that looks a bit thick there but uh whether he can reach in two is probably debatable swinging very well today that’s only what two three yards offline it just shows you’ve got to be very accurate here goes Bubba doesn’t like it well he’s taken driver off seven he he hasn’t held back all day has he that him just short of the bunker think I think that’s him yeah he just he just seems to be knocking up on the group in front as well he’s he’s just not bothered is he he’s out there just to have a bit of fun crowd certainly love it what’s R we got also with the driver one’s online the bunker the bub is short of is at 349 I don’t know whether he got it properly just smashed it on the edge of near the edge of the green again I think this is incredible hitting the world’s gone mad give us some wind just an iron for me down this Fairway that’s how mat’s playing under control contrast of styles here [Applause] well we may get to see but I’d love to know what the distance is between that shot and Rory’s well it’s well over 100 yards you could you see from there I mean Rory is literally I don’t know how long is this height there well that’s a in between those four bunkers there it’s 135 yard to the front edge there you go and Rory’s just up smash just short of the green right here goes Ross fer the only Englishman up there at the moment right in the thick of it with a few Americans that was a very tough cut though good S I think Wayne said 65 ft and he’s left it a good 10t short maybe 8T struggling for his par now yeah Kevin Chapel second of 15 this 496 yards there a big down slope just short of the green you know this course well don’t you my goodness you’re calling everything here which round do you want to go around golden speed second to the ninth from 162 yards yeah that’s a nice shot good control he’s disappointed but really and truly that’s a really good chance for birdie yeah I was saying earlier I just think he’s been way too hard on himself pressing himself since he blew up there at the Masters earlier in the year now Fowler birdie put at seven get there and he’s shown he he loves lyx golf remember he shot one of the rounds of the tournaments in Georges when Darren won yeah in some pretty horrible condition as well awful yes he says he actually developed his his his imagination on a driving range he spent a lot of time as a as a kid on the driving range it was fairly flat piece of land he used to try and imagine things out on the Range in the way and he’d have to shape shots off the these imaginary objects it’s perfect professional golfer than imagining things Justin Thomas back in a tie for the lead three Americans Reed Thomas and Watson all five under VJ sing for birdie at eight he qualified through the quickens loan tournament just a few weeks ago had a good finish so he’s here and brought the form along with him back to the seventh hole mat Yama Rory getting a great evation by the crowd on the left hand side here matama left with 166 great light up and upsolute just tight flag on the right R’s drive by the way 377 not bad just an 8 IR here for matsi armor Nice Shot there for mat gives himself a good birdie chance but these two other guys you saw ball just short of the bunker he’s going to have a little flick and Rory’s probably going to putt his on just a nice little bump and run up the green Ross Fisher quite a long way short with his approach P at the eighth makes his PA though well done he stays four under just one off the lead saw Russ on the practice day and he was really upbeat about his chances here and the way the course was set [Applause] up difficult to get close here for buba flags on the right bad angle mat’s Ball’s a good Target good call there right at that ball but a just seems to make those shots in particular look so easy yeah that was that was a difficult shot really tight live not a very good yardage and he’s he’s just made it look [Applause] simple saw the drive of Patrick Reed at the 13th slightly pushed it into this second cut of rough trying to muscle it out there’s a nasty Bank of grass on the right hand side of this green but he’s avoided that Sergio run there didn’t he out the side running up not quite as good a result that’s really unlucky because that was a cracking shot yeah he’s now facing quite an awkward potentially awkward up and down we got Kevin Chapel now this birdie P good 25 ft if not a little bit more oh oh middle fantastic p and still hasn’t made a pass so far on the back nine seventh birdie today Rory maroy is going to chip it little bump and run up the green 34 yards I’m not sure i’ be worrying about that this is all about feel little clumsy needs to sit he will not be pleased with that Masters champion going along nicely today three under t- shot at eight good looking player I surprised I didn’t realize he was so highly ranked when he got to August we’d won four tournaments and in short succession and he was in the top 10 really surprised me well just cuz you get close these greens doesn’t make it any easier Ro’s got a chance here though it’s just running through the Fringe downhill a little bit left to right as well this is TR right here postage stamp seventh [Applause] green lots of memories great yes tried to get rid of a few of them but turn great TI two in a row for Rory three in the last four holes M Roy moving along nicely Jordan spe now good birdie chances to get to three under out and 33 oh that was a good putt just had too much Pace but he it exactly where he wanted to I think what you were saying earlier Wayne is that the trouble is he did so well so early his his standards were set so high and you just can’t live up to that pretty high expectations mat Yama stays at one [Applause] under 14th Hall Justin Thomas looks to be lying okay or is it just sat down slightly there it was very tricky shot that one left himself a good 25 ft for his PA there he goes Bubba yeah just a little bit of break here for Bubba a great chance you know what’s happening immediately with Bubba don’t you it’s all movement all the time Justin Rose good second shot in here to nine he makes three to bir’s one bogy didn’t take advantage those short holes opening short holes well day was absolutely buried in the Left Bank from his t-shot he’s just played a phenomenal third shot having chipped it across the green and off the green down the other side so he should be able to tap in for his bogey which sounds as though it could have been more costly now through the back of the 13th third shot now for Patrick Reed coming up this Bank in front of him I think he wanted to bump it into the bank didn’t he and just threw it a little too far yeah just missed the B that’s the danger with those shots that’s why the Flop shot from those can sometimes be a little bit better because if you miss it there’s your result after almost going in the coffin bunker from the t- shop he’s found himself about 25 ft short it’s got a good three ft of left to right another very tricky putt seen quite a few players read a little too much break into this one never got it hit did he didn’t hit it hard enough at all spe of Pate nine tricky one just right Edge oh hit it right Edge didn’t come back I think why he was disappointed about his second shot there just got up the top of a little tier and he knew it was going to be quick coming back down the hill plus it could have just trickled down you know two feet for birdie it’s a game of inches instead it’s a three- P bogey to finish the outward nine for Jordan SP one under to the turn Danny will it trying to get it to four under well aart from hitting it absolutely stiff he’s just about got the best put he could have on this green straight up the hill don’t see a lot of breaking in this one about 15 [Applause] ft just a three but it’s a dangerous hole out of the way potentially dangerous anyway here goes Reed after that uh indifferent chip to say the least to be a working man’s PA in the rough of the tea through the back dff oh well he probably deserved a bogey all in all but uh not the end of the world so he falls back to four under one off the pace [Applause] now back into the wind now this is where TR starts 124 for Rory don’t be greedy Rory close Squad beautiful shot cheeky smile there from Young Rory very pleased with that 1973 Jean Saron had a hole in one here about an hour earlier a 19-year-old Amer named DJ Russell became the youngest person ever to have a hole inone in a major championship now Rory starts it at the middle of the green hooks it back and textbook yes and sarzen was 71 years old when he made that hole in one bubba this is going in the bunker oh oh the only good thing he’s a left-hander if he was a right-hander you could just about give up on that one oh and it’s plugged it’s not all right even for a left hander that’s not all right perhaps he’ need to be right now and go back down the green he’s going to have to shoot it sort of over the back of the Green from there I know you’re a positive person Laura but there’s not much positive out of that well I did see the plug and I changed my mind a little bit at least we’ll have some fun now finally Matt Yama well I just think you got to play front edge of the green here and just take your chances from there but Rory threw one in there and teased them all matama get inside Rory I doubt it no is that leaking a little right hold on just that is inches from uh misery that isn’t it I think we got an entertaining few minutes coming up now I’m looking forward to seeing what Bubba does I’m trying to think of his options I think all he’s got looking to that is over the back of the green cuz um he can’t go the other way CU he’s not right-handed so unless he knowing him he can hit it right-handed he’ll turn his Club over knock it down the front two fo and but we’ll see it’s uh it’s a poor shot in all in all reality though that that for him is a very poor shot and he’s tied to the lead Buba I’m going to guess he’s not going to be tied for the lead in [Applause] a Ross fiser at nine to join Thomas Justin Thomas and BBA Watson at five under Justin Thomas came out of the bunker to hear so he’s struggling to make his par oh no he’s not he’s got away with murder today hold the bunker shot on I think it was 10 for for a par and and he was in all sorts of trouble there and then that one so it’s it’s his day so far just the one bogey on the 10th I think that bunker shot was 11 on 11 sorry yeah 11 yeah quite a debut from Justin Thomas open debut that is well this is fun not for Bubba it’s like a gladiatorial scene here release the Lions now I think I he’s going to try and get it to the back edge of the green I had a feeling he might just bunt it into the bunker and keep it in the bunker cuz this is plug this is going to come out with speed there’s nowhere to [Music] go pretty much that’s all he had and that actually a very good shot he’s a bit unlucky there just trickling over the bat but it is a big roll away there so a tough up and down for a bogey yeah well he got out and he’s left himself a chip hasn’t he y definitely 14th hole par three 167 he was just trying to hold that one down there kept his hands really low through the ball but he just turned a little bit with the wind now he’s got some problems back to B at the eighth there’s no good news Dom this isn’t easy either I just think this hole you’ve got to play for four five on the green and take your two puts if you can it’s just I think they R hitting it in their close just tempted by B have a go it and I just don’t think you can here take four threes here all week this is very difficult it’s downwind downhill going be very doing very very well to get this close making mental errors now he’s not taking your advice Jamie he should have just played it safe like he said take his b or take his double as it would have been but now he’s brought triple quadruple into play cuz this is presumably going to shoot down the green yeah Lori he was looking at the front of the green when he came up to the to the green as well so don’t like to see this it’s play such good golf up to now it’s cruel I’ve lost count what’s he going for he’s going for well that’ll be for five he’s got that for a double yeah well shortest hole on the course and now he’s looking at a triple spe from the front edge of of 10 for birdie you say four good spot here for Hideki coming up the green right to left [Applause] difficult shot here for Reed slight down slope landing on the down slope that’s excellent you know the the great thing about British fans is they understand how good a shot that was and because they know the difficulty they’re very knowledgeable fans over here Danny will it playing the par for ninth hole his second shot sends it to the back of the green he’s got to come down that ledge this is Bubba for a double bogy oh there it is that’s all those lovely shots he made up he’s now given three back and it’s so hard to get those three back from where he is on the on this part of the course with obviously the tough stretch coming up yeah as well as being quite a big morale Dent up there you go the six and probable an obvious two coming up for Rory so that’s a huge swing at this even at this early stage that’s going to hurt Bubba that one that looks ugly doesn’t it look at that lovely run of red and then a big black one safe three for mat y and a wonderful two for mroy gets him to four under one behind Justin Thomas yeah he’s starting to hit his stride now Rory isn’t he he uh popped it in the green inside bunkers at the first couple of holes didn’t look like he was entirely comfortable out there but certainly over the last three four holes he’s picked his game up yeah it looks good now doesn’t it a nice run of birdies here’s Patrick Reed pop up we saw his bunker shot just get away from him oh very nice very nice well we said Justin Thomas have made a few nice up and downs but that’s a wonderful one from Patrick Le and important as well bearing in mind the drop shot at the 13th oh what a picture that is that’s beautiful look the old police horses out there for a bit of a Wonder fantastic who said the weather in Scotland’s not good look at this so Thomas leading on his own from Chapel Reed fiser and now Rory mroy by virtue of that birdie to at the eighth hole sing willit and suan Lee all at three andp assuming who won the shenzen open on the European tour in China earlier this season Scott hen was a winner in Thailand the big hitting Aussie couple underpar Robert Rock played nicely up at Castle Stewart Justin Thomas this is his third shot he took a drop from the Heather he’s got his work cut out now he’s a couple of Miracle pars but this really would be something needs to miss that bunker not going to oh oh and it’s plugged well that that’s not good seen so many balls plug in such a short time in a tournament as today so I thought after the light range the last couple of days it would have really settled it down now Kevin Chapel Kevin Chapel lost his uh second shot here and he’s going to rack up a big number all of a sudden some struggles going on here an ugly eight yeah still got his run of no cars on the back nine isn’t he but that’s a really nasty one going down to the ninth t last hole that runs alongside the coastline this is not an easy hole the ninth now I don’t like to predict this group we got to hit an iron off here 283 to the bunkers down the left way now please Ro’s got the three-wood out so he’s going to pump it past those bunkers it’s pretty narrow up there and the gore sticks out on the right hand side as well straight down wind this is where the difficulty of the golf course starts it started on the last hole as we all [Applause] saw I’m sorry that’s brilliant Brave shot that’s all I’ll say but when you got their length it’s fall short now for Justin Thomas at the 15th coming out sideways well now he’s looking straight down the barrel of a double at best and a triple quite probably so the leader in a bit of trouble Matt’s the armor here he’s going with the iron that’s been his choice all day pretty much the other two have been hitting drivers everywhere he’s been keeping it safe nice swing [Applause] there perfect we are time to calm down Bubba just an iron here short of the bunkers we [Applause] hope yeah he just needs to take stock not get aggressive and make another mistake and CU he’s still well in it I mean EXC Thomas is having trouble up the up in front so he’s only two back now will it got to come down this little ledge about what 18 ft in front of him and down it goes Gathering [Applause] Pace tricky part that one a good effort Justin Thomas now this is his fifth be desperate to get this up and down cuz uh Double’s not good but triple looks really bad not too bad he’ll have a chance but not going to be leading in a minute I I would say Jason day out at nine wow one over through nine holes for the world number one keep on Sil two Bogies in a row to the turn I don’t think anyone was expecting that it’s like his first round at the US Open put himself in trouble didn’t he so hopefully he’ll have a good back nine here’s Jordan on the feared 11th t- shot the line he can just see a crane he need to be just right of that Crane and that looked like it was get it in this Fairway and then just hope for the best of your second shot oh it didn’t come back even with a good lie he’s going to struggle to reach the Green in twoo Scott Gregory the am champion missing out on a par at the last started so well he was four under through 10 holes then unfortunately made a seven at 11 bogy the 12th and then another seven triple bogy at the 13th round of 78 for the Amad champion ball positions at nine Bubba Watson mat Arma both with irons off the T and Rory with a three-wood 94 left 174 left for babba and quite a bare lie on top of a little bit of a the null on The Fairway Flags accessible here it’s a two t two tier green pins just at the bottom of that tier so he can get to this straight down [Applause] wind nicely played about 158 18 ft there for his three four yards closer for Hideki matama 170 yards downwind similar thing pitchet just on the front of the green let it release 79 for EDI [Applause] Nice Shot there from AI an 8ot for birdie he’s one under that will get to get him to 200 under if he can knock that one in at the turn turning 34 you ever hit any 320 yard three Woods Laura I don’t have a three-wood so no but I wouldn’t be able to I definitely wouldn’t be able to don’t have a three-wood no they go too high for me 94 yds for Rory perfect angle looks to have settled down after a bit of a dodgy start now Rory playing very nicely oh goodness could have just as easily gone down good nothing good ever happens when you hit a pin it normally go I think that might have been a bit closer than that it just seems if you hit the pin you I met a Duffer at the US Open on nine hit the most incredible shot in there hit the pin 40 yards back down the Fairway never helps I know you’ve our first time I ever met you Laura we were in Canada playing a team event as we watched Thomas for double bogey at 15 oh yes well if there’s anything as such as a good double bogey that’s it and I was playing with Jan Stevenson and I was on the Range hitting balls you turned up and your clubs hadn’t arrived and you pulled out someone else’s five on I’m hitting my five on and you started hitting a borrowed five 25 yards past me I packed up and left Matt Jones from Australia well done Australian Open champion last year was a fantastic win he’s got Tony Navaro on the bag Tony was a long time cadd for for Greg Su M Le now this to get to four under tied for the lead if he can knock this in four-way tie at the top or three-way tie because obviously Justin’s just dropped a couple nothing but hacking it out to the Fairway for spe just cannot afford to miss that Fairway and it’s the most intimidating t-shot on the course all blind he’s going to leave himself with a pretty long third as well there Reed mroy and suan Lee all at four under Justin Thomas by virt of the double bogy at 15 he’s back to the minus 3es so is the Masters champion Danny Willet among that group and Matt Jones in the early stages of his round excellent start little bit of a right to Le for Bubba that been a nice comeback if he’ had just made a birdie there after that horrible triple on the postage stamp but have to settle for the park he’s just looking at that there cuz that’s where that slope with the back tier comes in and he’s wondering why it didn’t feed more to the left cuz perfect Pace to take that break well things changing golf pretty quickly and they have done the last few hes for Rory no doubt about that he’s got a great chance here definitely going to come off the left hand side right down the far end of the golf course by the Caravan Park they look quite nice actually so left to right of ferari just overread it hit a good put hit it exactly where he was looking but this will be for an outward half of 32 for melroy four birdies no Drop shots for the 2014 open Champion here’s Patrick Reed one of the co-leaders second shot into 15 looks like he’s gone for a big cut there it’s come up well short I think he had to low because the lip of that bunker he’ have gone straight at it I think he would might have plowed it into it matama Well Done 200 pound 34 took over the mandle of Japan’s best player from Rio ishika who’s been absent for a while horrible spot here for will it grass grabbing the huzzle of the club Natural Instinct of the player then when you hit a shot like that always blaming the condition straight away was pointing that’s just the way we are power three 14th hle 67 yards Louie usas in the 2010 Open winner one of the best swings in the game producing a hole in one back to level car that’s handy he needed that wonderful stuff for moose tasen still not how a birdy terrible round just a lovely control little drawer start at the center of the green and turn it back to the flag it was going no nowhere else the drinks are on me not me I going say you V us around that’s a change get in [Applause] there third shot now for Danny will it at the 10th left himself a long T up there three under at the moment not looking like he’s going to stay on that Mark unless he can salvage a long P hasn’t dropped a shot yet today here’s Justin Thomas this is just in second shot to the 16th the par five after that Horror Story double at the last doesn’t like this much either by the looks of it not too bad just in the first cut which is not that bad this week 10th T matama needed about 20 yards left of that building you can see down in the distance through the valley just move that a little further right than he wanted what sort of line will mroy go with absolute bullet yeah that’s textbook there long you not it too far might go through beautiful C phon down please folks thank you not much room for error when you look at that is there now it’s another scary t- shot especially when the wind is up [Applause] he is a magician a contortionist he he plays some shots fun to watch pulling out from the 10th Fairway there’s the seventh green grand stand by the postage stamp the eighth hole quite a compacted little part of the course down here Reed melroy and suan Lee tied for the lead at the Open Championship B Watson couple under par would have been much better than that had he not taken a six at the postage stamp a triple bogey there very costly for Bubba who looked to be going along very nicely to that point Danny’s got a left to right 30 footer up the hill here to save par bogey for will it there drops in back to two under Patrick Reed not a difficult little pitch straight up the green here at 15 oh just spun a little more need hope will it just a tidy up for a bogy five first drop shot today for the Masters champion Justin Thomas here third shot on the par five decent little lie on the up slope should be able to spin it a little bit oh that’s clumsy a long long birdie putt but uh steady the ship with a Tupac 7 ft for PO for Patrick Reed good save stays on top with Rory mroy and suing Lee ball positions there of matama maroy and Watson long way back mat Arma yeah 193 way second shot reminds me the 10th of St georgees and the t- shot the fourth of St Georges another great link course uphill into the wind not much green at the end of this hole and no bunkers on this hole and it doesn’t need them and that’s tr’s version of the valley of sin just don’t want to be over there difficult up and down it’s probably about 10 ft below the level of the green that’s a no-o Zone down the right from 163 Bubba back foot just misjudged the breeze not too bad though being short of the green there it just Falls away both sides of up on top of this screen you got to be incredibly accurate Rory from 158 Flags limp but it is blowing up here that’s what’s fooling them down on The Fairway [Applause] there yeah well they making the same mistake aren’t they Sam Torrance is back with us thank you Dom building up nicely as usually TR front line playing easy back nine just as tough as it gets and very little win as we go to Patrick Reed 16th power five just leaked it a bit right will it catch a bit of the Fairway that’s okay not too too bad get this hold down Breeze you’ll see players hitting driver over the ditch and just have a medium iron into the green but it’s a tough par five when you got to lay up off the T gorgeous scene down there at TR Beach there’s only two holes on the course aren’t there with with the ditch running through them it’s the 16th and what the third third yes second shot of 12 Jordan SP just little out of sorts needs to someone to light the fire played one of the best rounds I’ve ever seen at the Australian Golf Club when he won the open there two years ago 63 on Sunday and Lee now for power at nine in off the marker and that would have felt better than any of the birdies he’s had before tough chip here going with Loft many would run this no green to work with [Applause] just going with Loft I’ve got a good mate of mine Brandon o Carol I told him he had Loft as well lack of flaming Talent former leader Justin Thompson Thomas sorry just a little light on that one made a great double at the last hole ever say a great double just going to make sure he hits this up this hill Bub little bit left to right you like that it’s one of those where it just goes off in your hands Robert Rock the Englishman this is very nice beautiful rounding nicely back into form over the last few weeks or so is Robert not much in this Ferrari it’s all about the pace fraction left to ride overall but not much well judged there by Mel Roy should get his power as to go to the 11th straight at the camera tow is the perfect line here that should be perfect exactly where you want to hit it on 11 hardest t- shot in the course you see nothing from the te you don’t see any of the Fairway just got to pick out your line get your practice rounds get all the glean all the information you can be a lot harder without the TV towers up there too they actually help you this week pick some targets matsi Yama was down to the right just down the bottom so was good shot to get it up short of the hole but this for par looked like he was going to take a step towards the hole there I think he thought he made it Patrick Reed second into the par five 16th don’t think he can get there so just laying up for position hopefully gives himself his favorite yardage and he can attack from there big part here for Baba with that 11th t-shot looming all those gor bushes he needs this down the hill pretty quick yet to record the first bird at 11 yet numerous Bogies maai excellent part from the front of the green just up to here this was part for an outward nine 32 well done Ro that’s a good nine didn’t off to the best of starts missed the first three greens but pardon them all they may not have had any birdies yet at 11 but they’ve had two nines Steven Bic and David Deval Justin Thomas par three 17th 221 yards hold today cut over on the left hand side on the right hand side left as we look yeah thank you Sam such a demanding ho 17 they’d be very happy if he misses the green right there he’ll know all about it you got to miss the greens in the correct sides when you miss a green give yourself a chance of making part very short walk between the 10th green and the 11th T Michael Roy and Co heading there we’ll go to Jason day one over par got a friendly bounes back off the wall wall there Jason he not going his way at the moment Danny’s got 2011 to the flag here in out of the left very dangerous flag position very easy to bounce over that wall he’s tried to draw it in and he’s pushed it oh that’s just gone straight in at the base of that tree they got lucky bounce hit the wall and came out but I’m afraid the Master’s Champion he’s in bones but it’s not good Patrick Reed third shot that’s 6 SE the power five one of our co-leaders and that to take the outright lead good final round last week 67 with 6 under through six holes 12th hole outside chance of a birdie for Jordan SP to get himself back in red numbers Shake of the head not his best now Manero is just eagled six this for birdie at seven Great finish last week to get here excellent staff from the young Italian he’s back to top form he’s confident again and he can play yeah was a remark able fall for manaco he won four times early in his European tour career as a young man and then slipped way down the world rankings he’s on his way back we’ll go to the 11th mroy something annoying about the Fairway great swing this huge turn big wide stance keeps as still as possible just hits a mile want to copy a swing copy this one oh no well it’s tight it’s very tight I think he’s at a break Sam look at that I think he’s even got a lie and it hit no one it got there of its own accord it looks like it might be in a wi indentation but he’ll be delighted when he gets up there take anything he can get wow now mat Yama very solid when I used to hate following a drive like Michael Roy cuz you on that te you’re not thinking about out of bounds right you’re feeling great you’re just concentrating and the one of the greatest players in the world it’s straight right almost out of bounds this would be great frightening t-shot this one all you can see is G Baba’s hot he’s tried to hit this over the 1230 to air cut it back it didn’t oh my goodness that is just he’s sanged between two lumps of rough there that literally just be a chip outs sideways yeah a little walkway this is average averaging 5.07 already changing 97 from a par five to a four yeah and it’s a perfect day he’s been lucky here he’s got a swing well he’s going to get out of jail here Jason dve but it’s nice to get a good break occasionally remember Danny Willet in trouble there as well this is the second for Suman Lee at the 10th tied for the lead can he get it all the way back there onto the passing surface Matty Jones is for Eagle at six shame really quick player pulls a trigger fast I mean he just looks at it and goes he’s he’s a really good character 17th hole all the way across the green outside chance of a birdie for Justin Thomas it wasn’t a bad effort at all but he’s got four or five feet coming back Danny’s got about 6 feet for par here breaking left to right not a lot of break somewhere around the left Edge finally looked like he was dead in at the tree there did it come out of the Bush or was to the right of the green end against the wall he it an incredible chip to hear if he was shame drop shot there for the Masters champion boogy 10 y 11 back to one under for the outright lead Patrick Reed 30 putt at 16 oh hit a good P just little unlucky he stays four under two holes to go for the American so Thomas’s first pot this for his power at 17 well done Justin a two blemishes bog at 10 double at 15 six parodies to go with it been told that Bubba’s already pitched out so matama well in the Fairway and mroy the biggest break of the day for him well not a good break here for mat he’s in a divot typical isn’t he at the Fairway you’re in a divot he’s got 202 so with a long on actually he not too bad can play off the back foot and drill it in low it was a delicate little chip it wouldn’t be so nice out of this light but he can drive this one forward try and run it into the green and you want to try and hit the shot as low as you can really I always tried to hit it lower than the wall That’s only 2 and 1/2 ft High looks like it’s on a good line oh it’s a gorgeous shot what a shot from mat Yama my goodness me we may have our first birdday on 11 of the day bit of luck for Rory fellas just 178 and he’s on the walkway can get to the back of the ball no problem whatsoever not a great angle obviously but a lot better than he thought when he was on the te into the wind great flight on it straight at it yeah it was dangerous off that UPS slope Cy Li could easily hit a flyer he’s just tried to drill it up there just short it’s not too bad there see the 12th T just behind that uh 11th green that comes back in the opposite direction almost opposite anyway assuming Lou Lee who’s just toppled off this 10th [Applause] green just an iron here for Thomas at 18 wow there’s some speed there 300 yards to the bunker on the right hand side and that’s well back very conservative Play Good angle at the flag Watson played his second to hear from that horrid lie well it’s done well well to stay there it could have spun back off the green is that for power [Applause] Bubba 17th T Patrick Reed [Applause] lots of encouragement from his caddy and why not it’s been a good day so far for Patrick Reid alongside mroy Lee and Australia’s Matt Jones manisero going nicely so VJ sing and Ricky Fowler on guys plenty of options here for Rory but he’s going with the flat stick that’s a smart play could have hit the 79 could have hit the lob wedge this is what link golf’s about good approach there from maroy left to right of down the hill for par while that t- shop was sailing through the air sure he didn’t think he’d be there for three 13th hle Jordan SP to play his second hip good shot there from Jordan SP now bubba this is power on 11 it’s just just kind of gone to Pieces the last few holes quite incredible he’s never really done well at the open buba it’s not really his type of game very narrow Fairways and he he tends to shape the ball so much that he’s almost got to land it in the left rough to stop it on the right edge of the Fairway or vice versa when he hooks it but he’ll find a way one day bit of patience Sam his record is pretty poor isn’t it it certainly is Jimmy first bird of the day you say could be here he not surprised can’t be many people hit this green in two great shot out of that divot for matama this is just a little bit of a Drifter he’s even pretty slow over his Parts as well very slow stroke matama not quite to me I I can tell you that the last eight nine players on the leaderboard at the moment the scores on the 11th read 755 677 997 just to give you some of the severity of the hole a genuine card wrecker Justin Thomas quite a way go with his second shot here in the at the 18th having played an iron from the T be right he says oh and it is what a beauty maroy great save there a little bit lucky with his t-shot it’s on the card as a four he stays tied at the top four under par the dastardly 11th out of the way Danny Willet second shot to 12 tricky little shot coming up for him to probably have to bounce that up the slope the postmortem Fowler’s got 148 coming out of the rough here the rough is lying with him so he should get some forward spin when this lands can see it just releasing over the green with that forward spin there couple under flower are still going okay D’s got 141 pin from the semi- rough so he should be able to put a bit of spin on this but the wind’s actually just turned almost down off the right and you definitely don’t want to miss this flag left so I’m expecting to see this just to the right of the [Applause] flag are there another club a little bit harder there for Jason day just short of the 17th green at this par three Patrick Reed for birdie [Applause] hello and just like 11 the 17th hole hasn’t had a birdie on all day today so Justin Rose 13th long attempt through his three it’s a good line speed’s not bad no you put your arms up too early Justin go is a rown for that one theit not from that long but from 20 ft it’s going in it’s a step forward and as soon as that foot goes towards the hole it’s missed guaranteed mat Yama bit of rest bite for the players down we’re in the 12th just an iron for mat armor dog leg left to right there’s that pause looks pretty good I used to walk all the time Sam I was just loved but used to drive nor Norman nuts he hated it and the more I did it the more the matter he got that was so enjoyable well bu’s put the driver away for the time being got the iron out lots of trains a nice service from Glasgow to prfi airport for all the spectators and everybody else straight over my head Jamie we didn’t see Rory is he okay Rory’s right down the middle sir perfect driver NOP it’s a rescue type club or he three-wood perfect he’s driving it well mroy really is 13 birdie part here for Jordan SP to get back into the red he’s probably left more part short today than he did the whole of last season he not quite got the grips of the speed of the greens yet and even with four practice rounds four practice days here it’s tough tough when the gun goes off to make yourself hit them birdie put there for just Austin Thomas and that’s a round of 67 and leader in the clubhouse first man to break the 70 barrier today not bad on your open debut good pitch there from Denny will 12 second to 11 here for career’s suin Lee who’s tied for the lead little un there assumingly I love his swing though now Nico Kart’s third last week to get in here well done well done third birdie of the day excellent start for Nicholas karts made his open debut here back in 2004 karts F long little pitching can run here at 12 just a testing distance to underp for his round see how the hands lead the club head stay ahead of the club trying to hold the face to the Target as long as possible not never trying to scoop the ball up with the hands Jason day could do with holding one of these really hasn’t been the world number one St so [Applause] far world number two Dustin Johnson gets underway at 4 minutes past 2 this afternoon so just about an hour and a half before he gets off man in red hot form the US Open Champion 18th T nice swing we saw Justin Thomas hit the one AR towards the right hand trap that should be perfect with a straight bounce very good he just brought the left bunker into play there but when you can’t reach that one on the right that’s quite a large area to aim at obviously better to get nearer the green five players tied for the lead Justin Thomas in with a 67 Rock and csarts only one behind Billy hell has gone to the turn in 34 last week’s winner Alex noren round of 70 so he’s in at one under I actually thought you said the rocking karts there it does like to do a bit of rocking at night I used to he’s a reformed character nowadays isn’t he Sam yeah he’s a great kid too so riy F’s chip from Over the back right of 12 this for his part to say two under he’s up and out of it straight away it’s amazing golfers they know they’ve missed it as soon as they hit it disappointing bogy tough hole of 12 ranked second hardest last time over were here after being a bit unlucky getting over the back of 11 Le played this beautifully oh wow well he’ll probably be the only player in the field over the back and that was nearly the first bir at 11 Danny Willet for par at the 12th oh Dam so so bogy at 10 bogy at 11 and for all the world looks like another one there at 12 I just love the way the turn around look at the caddy not blaming the cad but can you actually believe that just happened to me shame boogie boogie boogie back to level you’re the you’re the one with a name on your bag mate don’t look at me Lee for power at 11 just stay tight at the top oh we’ve seen Korean women do wonderful things on the LPGA Tour had some good Koreans in the men’s game but it looks like we might have a new generation a new wave of talented young players babba Watson already played his second come up short of the green matama perfect t-shot with an iron maoy hit five wood I think no aiming right just a touch a draw from Matsuyama that’s [Applause] okay matd Jones for the outright lead birdie pedate beautiful IR shot to pin High rode a bit of an emotional roller coaster at the Aussie open he had the lead for most of the week and then lost it and then h a bunker shot and put and all of a sudden he was back in the lead went on to win at the Australian R mroy second to 12 here [Applause] he just tried to draw this one in Rory just left out to the right getting a full wedge there to get it pitching up on top of the slope stick by the pin but just come up half a club short due to the lack of draw on it which would have help them he’s been talking recently about just getting a little bit steep with his eyes he’s been working with his coach on that aspect of his game Japanese player Shugo imahira who got his place in the Open Championship through the mauno open and a good finish there Hayden por is Young South African who won breakthrough Victory on the European tour earlier this season down at the cherg open Rich stery Brandon Grace also flying the South African colors Ross Fisher like Danny Willet so was going along very nicely four under to the turn but like will it Bogi 10 11 and 12 to fall back to one under well buba Watson’s just puted up to a couple of feet from down there in the Dell that’s okay Rory putting straight up this slope it’s it’s straight for the majority of his journey just a little bit of DFT left to right when he gets on top [Applause] I’m behind this green standing on the 13th T looking down the remaining holes and it’s a stunning view all the stands are absolutely packed that’s what an open’s all about same here for hii sort of gathers up this hill as it goes up it’s like a little funnel really and it gets on top and it just drifts left to right two parts are good though and you might get lucky you Bubba Watson just a tidy up for his part was five under only four holes ago playing the eighth hole and tied for the lead how quickly it changes it’s a power also for hii matama he stays at one under [Applause] he’s got 204 to a back right flag here the wind’s almost dropped to a zepher so needs to still play to the left here though doesn’t want to miss this green to the right absolutely no shot from down there done well to carry that corner to stay up in the back left side of the [Applause] green maroy tapped in at 12 for his par he remains at the top tied at the top fow is a bit closer at 200 to the flag he’s coming out of the rough though so again he’s not going to be able to control that spin as well needs to think about Landing this more to the center of the green [Applause] fors a good score here at 13 last six holes now straight back into the breeze he’s got 190 great opportunity to attack the flag from the left side of the Fairway [Applause] good drive from Patrick Reed at the 18th not too far to go for his second oh and a bit like Justin Thomas he shot a while they go it’s an absolute Beauty from Reed so he’s got a great chance to finish with a birdie yes and to take him out of a log Jam at the top there’s six players at four under the moment just watch this that is just a gorgeous golf swing got everything I reckon his hip speed is is the up there the quickest of all of them while he gets on his left side and rotates he too generates tremendous speed very wide stance mat Arma a perfect t- shot could you do that could you stop a pause at the top of your back swing I used to I actually did it I used to just take it up the top just mugging around playing a practice round I’d take it up the top and just hold it there for 10 seconds and just hit it something I buil in my game as we watch Bubba Watson that’s something I wish I’d never done there’s another good t- shot so three good t- shots from this Marquee group yeah I read an article by Gary Player that said pause at the top but what Gary was saying was make sure you take your time and don’t rush from the top complete your back swing well I over did it Patrick Reed for the outright lead and a round of 66 yes so he continues his fine form from the final round of last week’s Scottish open there we have an eagle two at the third out in 31 couple of Bogies on the back nine but home in even power 35 leader of the championship one ahead of his fellow American Justin Thomas melroy suing Lee and Matt Jones also just one in AAR well apart from a couple of Drop shots that was pretty easy going for Patrick [Applause] Reed Matty Jones now you watch’s this he’s stepped in put the club Behind the ball boom he’s a rules officials dream and could have used another club old dog Tony Navaro he and fluff and M caddy Brad Whittle who’s cing for Russell Knox the three longest serving Cades on tour Aiden portius from South Africa made a legal at the fourth hole he’s got this for a three at the sixth well that’s a very nice move Eagle par Eagle pus to four under one behind we can certainly get the ball out there Hayden we saw turn his b just hang onto this back left corner here two putts for his par good line another round it been close well the crow like it behind oh why not why not Kia almost getting a one yeah Patton kazir Open Championship debut two birdies two Drop shots today so far for him not far away from hole in one [Applause] there Danny will to clean up here at 13 that’s his first power in a while so remain even par coming off three Bogies in a row to start this back n so it’s a p for Jason day not sure whether it’s relevant or not but certainly in one of the practice rounds he hit his second shot to 18 and just sort of clutched at his his ribs it I mean he looks to have been swinging okay out there but he said it wasn’t anything serious Matt Jones just short of nine this for the outright lead but I’m sure he’d be happy with two pots maybe not now oh my goodness oh Matty Jones five on the front line five birdies no Bogies as a grin on Wayne Grady’s face from ear to ear have another look at that that was delightful you’re only thought in your head here is the weight try and get the line right just try and get up there Stone dead but he’s got it absolutely perfect running straight all the [Applause] way very nice didn’t he do something rather special to win on the PGA tour a couple of years back he won the Honda Classic just not sure under what circ*mstances [Music] 200 yards to go for mats Yama pinned back ride trying to hit a little cut in there wow he flew that a long way that’s a tough up and down coming got a little Hollow to go through M right perfect position l swing twirl of the club out and sit a half a club long see the ball there just a foot into the second cut simple little chop chip back up the green but a little bit unlucky he thought that was perfect babba Watson trying to bring it in from left to right and stay there good shot little Hill there you can’t quite see the back right side of the green let’s go to the 12th and suin Lee to get into that tie for the lead once again at five under one in China but he’d also had a chance to win in Malaysia the tournament of Marcus Fraser ended up winning no Drop shots today so far for SU Justin Rose for birdie 15th not many birdies on this hole tracking nicely it’s tracking nicely well done Justin Rose he gets himself to 200 par 71 par five par three and a par four to come so good chance of Justin breaking 70 Richard stery for birdie at nine just tweak right and come on it’s got to go thank you so he’s out in three under part beautiful scenes looking down over Royal tune and it looks good for Patrick Reed and for Matt Jones five under par Reed and Justin Thomas home and host 66 and 67 respectively and it was in Houston that Matt Jones scored his uh PGA Tour breakthrough hold a long Putt in regulation and then he chipped in to beat Matt cooa excuse me sorry I apologize I thought he’d won the Honda silly me Billy h who’s won the FedEx cup over in the states he’s a busy little player isn’t he two under through 10 holes VJ sing like Monty 53 years young a tough chip here from atama from behind the green 13 just that little bit further from the green there is so much harder when you’ve got to almost give the chip a hit maro’s only got to carry it five yards in front of him it’s not quite the same but it’s similar to the situation Patrick re was in a little earlier Sam and he was kind of caught between two things he tried to bump it into the bank just took it a yard too far and then it shot through cost him a shot so he needs to be careful shot is totally dictated by the lie if he’s got a nice clear lie he would just float this up a foot on the green release out and just drop in simples oh he’s bladed it oh my goodness me that’s a 10 handicapper there oh we don’t want to see that one again Rory Rory Rory inexplicable where yeah that was uh that was strange wasn’t it Sam so something more about the Li than we could see but the he just hit a bullet second shot and in the air all he was thinking of was how Short’s the putt going to be for birdie and the worst words in golf still your shot is that worse or I’ll finish I’ll finish I’ll Mark it’s one of the two in well after a slightly difficult start it’s been fairly easy progress for Rory yes he did get a break with his drive at 11 there’s some action at Prestwick this train spotters I love planes get both here while melroy now unlikely put although we saw Monty H one from the front of the green here earlier today for par he’ll have that for bogy and fall two back Baba for birdie 5 under through six at the start of the round he stands level par playing the 13th we saw mat Yama thre the green this for his power quite a slop up let’s make sure he hits this one hard enough good part but it adds up to ABI from Matsuyama [Applause] just a tap in for his bog here magy oh goodness man well as I said he hit a bullet second shot could have bet your house that he wouldn’t be walking off there with the six back to two under he’s had a couple of eagles already Hayden porus including one at the sixth birdy chance at the seventh to tie the lead how about that for a start five under through seven 5 under the last four holes quite exceptional a young South African well we have had a a South African champion here at trun Bobby lock way back in 1950 before we started that run of six consecutive US Champions so porous alongside Matty Jones and Patrick Reed at five under par one clear of the rest mroy all the way back to two under after the double drop at 13 big hitting Tony finow two under through five reckons he’ll use the driver maybe half a dozen times around Royal trun Podrick Harington the 07 and 08 open Champion round in 70 today and the last tea time is at 4:16 p.m. it’s a feature of the Open Championship off the same tea all day a fouler for birdie 14 off the left well done Ricky good birdie solid he gets himself to 200 one of the finest swings from Asia Su Lee great shoulder turn beautiful Rhythm it’s funny how they always speak in English when they’re talking to the Gulf for settle settled this is where maroy over the back made double oh that’s so unlucky and he’s almost a maoy divot so unlucky such a lovely shot looking very summery isn’t it could very well be the best weather day of the championship they are expecting some rain tomorrow and the breeze is forecast to pick up as well so make the most of it Bubba 14th T no shot tracker here you see it starting straight and cutting quite a bit left catch a bit oh it’s amazing how he does that there must have been 20 yards of movement in the flight of that ball gorgeous iron shot for Bubba he must been when a young kid just love to mess about on the Range a big hook a big slice and just found out that was the way he could play the game best and he sure can play the game well join Tony Johnson that wasn’ta mat Yama with that pronounced pause at the top ni a big high fade every time that’s excellent shot green gr’s away for a cup of tea welcome back Tony Johnson thank you Sam tiger what a pleasure to be here isn’t it I mean this golf course in this condition this tournament it’s Heaven it’s just Heaven don’t tell a producer but I would have paid to be here this week getting dirty looks for my fellow fellow commentators important shot here for melroy oh no exactly what he didn’t want and if that is plugged it’s not good it’s not good anyway it’s amazing how your mindset changes takes four to get down from the back of the 13th green now he’s plugged it in the left bunker well he’s in the left bunker it was coming down for a great height Richard scanny turning into the wind now and just hang on there that’s not bad actually on 10 Justin Rose second to 16 laid up short of the ditch oh it’s a wonderful strike keep drifting the thing oh he just wanted to miss those traps that’s okay pins back left so that’s absolutely fine par five yeah loads of green to work with and and he’s got a great short game Jones playing alongside St at 10 not enjoying it and big steep drop off for the Nan that’s not a great shot from where he was Co socks that’s for Birdie on nine it’s in it’s in excellent birdie from Ni dropped one at eight got it straight back at nine he’s out in three under and it is plugged unfortunately ferari absolutely no chance he can’t even get into that ball can’t get a stance with that deep face can have to just dig it out away from the flag the difficulty of these ly bunkers if you find them you’re in trouble and I’ll tell you what that’s some P he’s got left there too up over the shoulder of the bunker he’ll do well to make two putts from there and how hard did he hit that bunker shot to get it out I mean if that had been off off a grass he Li that would have gone 200 yards with a witch magnificent C I mean a little bit of sunshine Great Links Course and people are out in force to support huge moment Rory Michael Ro Open Championship here just made double 13 he must two put this for his bogey double double it’s never good it was fine can see what he has to look at there so big swing off the right and you can see the last 10 12 ft of the part is going to be straight downhill it’s very difficult to judge the pace as well it’s a tough part for Rory set it up right and well it’s not that bad just so hard to get it to the pr of that up slope at the right speed maybe get out of here with the single drop Matty Jorge just to the right of 10 he’s St oh trying to hit into the bank has he got it right he certainly has what a great shot from Matt Jones it’s a certainty to stay at five under the leader board with readen Aiden porus that’s a Yama extremely impressive young Japanese player had the pleasure of getting to know him in the last President’s [Applause] Cup great calm disposition he’s got hicky just off the front left of 10 is Richard stery Long birdie attempt they be delighted with two putts from here and he should accomplished that so he’ll stay at three under 14th green bua big swing big swing and he’s R it fantastically well just got a pair of Golden Hands this [Applause] man doesn’t really do anything in an orthodox manner really on or off the course he’s he’s different but he does thing his way and I’ll tell you what you can’t fault him he produces the goods Rory it’s a little bit further short than I thought it was this is a good 4 feet right to left that’s for bogy well done he back to one under Rory three shots gone in the last 10 minutes but that’s open golf for you still one under Justin Rose par 516th left himself a really good angle in here lands it just on the green to run it out and delightful touch he’s been here since last week working on this golf course learning every little nook and cranny look at Su Lee little chip ah he played into the bik very nice looking welcome into the box first time today the legendary doy dly what a buildup thanks Sam what an absolute joy and a privilege to be here at Royal TR in the opening day of the open especially in these conditions beautiful Aiden porus to take the lead at the postage stamp oh yes but he’s 70 years old the’ll tell the tale of the day he went into the lead in the open at the postage stamp at tune well maybe not but still what a beautiful car two Eagles two birdies six under for the young South African already a winner this year and the jber open now suming Lee TA in par 600 for the last five holes Aiden extraordinary goal well hold another of The Season’s winners Suman Lee the 22-year-old Korean one the Shenzhen International in China and there’s how it looks in this opening day of the 145th Open Championship Hayden Porteus leading at six underpar one ahead of Patrick reden with a fine 66 man who got himself a climatized last week in in vaness in the Scottish open good final round to climb the leaderboard Matt Jones the Australian Open champion at five under after 10 but of course now moving into the the really tough back nine and if you can hold on to the score you made in the front nine and the back you’ve done very well Steve Stricker one lovely experienced American doesn’t play a lot these days picks his schedule very carefully and it works for him nice to see VJ here again qualified to take part this year and there’s Rory Back At One under now Bobby Bubba Watson also W under butara Kong watm Thailand you’re awesome you were waiting for me to say that I knew I could see the look in your face if I could only asked you who that chap what that Chap’s name was but I couldn’t say it and you come straight out with it magnificent I’ve been practicing for the last hour and what about Monty you cannot keep him out of the headlines Sensational start after the double bogy to turn and three under lost a few in the back nine but so does everyone Ricky crap Fowler across the 15th excellent approach but couple Ricky many’s favorite this [Applause] week Rory with a big stick 4 96 yd P [Applause] four and he has absolutely land [Applause] exceptional Drive day’s putt here is around 35 ft slightly downhill not really any breaking if anything it’s going to move a touch from right to left but really it’s another one of those shots that he’s left too far away from the flag poor shot really from where he was good speed EXC P the world number one let right up no messing just tap it in done three-time winner already this year Jason day he said seven wins since the open l year that’s what Andrews no wonder he world number one Danny’s got a very makeable putt here it’s around 12 ft slightly left to right maybe a ball outside the left he really needs to make this to stop the rot he was up and out of that that looked good until he hit it just not quite got his rhythm on the greens yet head’s coming up as he’s striking it sumen Lee from Korea 22y old one of the wave of new young players have got their first win in the European tour this year and he’s playing beautifully nicely played no bogy on the card yet four birdies in that front nine for suan back to will it for a par this time never a bad score on that hole Ricky Fowler no problems there stays a two under part and he’s taken to linkx golf like a duck to water winner of last year’s Scottish open did it in style too on the 15th M bunard but he’s escaped safely but Michael Roy and Watson both in pretty good shape just 162 left for Rory classic undulating rumpled links Fairways of course a lot greener than they had hoped it would be for this year but I think the RNA you great credit because basically they don’t try and set up the course to any pattern they’ve got in mind whatever the weather delivers that’s what you play at the open and if it’s hot and sunny and dry and Dusty and bouncy fine if it’s a little bit Greener and a little bit softer that’s okay too and I think that’s a great policy you just you just h a cut as well deal what your dealt very philosophical Samuel lack of alcohol Diggy no Bubba nice pair of hands and gol just wants to turn it in from left to right it stayed out there a little bit that’s okay matama bunk it off the tea managed to get it out of here so third shot distinct pause at the top of the swing it’s pretty unusual but he does the same thing every time and that’s the smart shot just get it up there pin High try and give yourself an opportunity for Park maroy just the 344 yards off the t a little into the breeze not bad maybe just a hint of temper about it as well Tony after the last couple of holes [Music] wonderful iron shot from Rory well Matt Jones is fortunately OB with his opening t- shot on this hole he say it’s positional to he or it’s third shot to he and this is left as well he doesn’t like this either oh and it’s long and it’s left so he’s having a tet time on 11 the leader or one of the leaders Matt Jones Nicholas karts for a par at 10 it’s a decent effort but it’s going to be a shot gone for neckolas he’ll go back to two under crowds in the grand stands bathed in sunshine as they watch Justin Rose for bir at 17 and all the way about back at this tough par three Big Easy Ernie else Lee Westwood two wonderful stars of the game they yet to win this first major can it be this week he’s been close this year he was close at the Masters he’s up there at the US Open qual qualified for this vent in Asia spe running out of holes to get into red numbers this for a birdie could this be the one oh yes it can this young man holds so many PS from that sort of 20 foot range with regularity my person don’t always think he’s the very best from three or 4T but that range there he Dynamic back to the first T and what a good group this is to watch hey guys no pictures please thank you Phil melson an emotional open Champion every open Champion is emotional but I think for Phil when he finally got his hands on the clar jogging 2013 at mirfield it meant so much to a man who had struggled so much to get to grips with Links golf over the years one back to back on the Scottish open and then the open this is game number 37 on the T from the USA Phil Michelson still just one shot of the career Grand slamming Majors just like Arnold Palmer Tom Watson Sam sne they all finished one shot as well he’s got this one though and he’s got a good t- shot away at the first on the te from England Lee Westwood just an iron for Nicholson same for Westwood and it looks like the same for Ernie there is out of bounds all the way down the right if you’re not feeling 100% it’s not one to really have a a dier it’s a 4 ir and a wedge no problems Le to me over the years has had probably if not the best Rhythm he’s right up there on the top the his rhythm never changes in this golf swing FL that’s perfect on the tea from South Africa Ernie Els spent about an hour with Ernie having a chat on the pting green the other day Ricky Roberts is on the bag this week and says that he thinks it is the best he seen Ernie El swing in 10 years and he says that Ernie’s pretty deadly with cross-handed too sir is there another one in store for The Big Easy well it would be welcomed to buy many if there is play J he is holding the claric jugg in Sunday night Tony Johnson’s going to look awfully clever so riy Roberts that would be a first to keep me looking clever but uh all three good t- shots only just in the semi but it’s okay he said looking clever he didn’t say you were clever that’s a very good point got me again back to matuyama for par at 15 come on well done lovely put good four there for hii world number 17 Phoenix Open champion this year Ricky Fowler on a playoff there Matt Jones this the 11th hole and I’m afraid to say this is his sixth shot out of bounds with this first one over the back left in four and there in five and is in in six it is oh oh the finest six of the [Applause] week still three under and when you take into account Els playing at 4.90 it’s not much of a loss pus final downwind hole and nicely played and he won The Jig open looked like he didn’t really have a lot of idea in the wind yet everything was just a massive Clump up into the stratosphere but you can see he’s learning those three quarter shots nice to see Michael Ro for birdie oh lovely putt that stroke really does look good boies at 13 and 14 straight back with a birdie at 15 Jordan spe he actually doubled 13 not speed Rory oh oh dear dear dear this is a well I’ve never seen a shank with a wood but if there ever was one that was it now I’m not sure if that’s OB if that fence is out of bounds we’ll find out very shortly it used to be out of bounds all the way down the right sorry I should have had that knowledge I don’t Richard stany coming back into form after a pretty Ted Time much of an injury [Applause] related man from ptor lovely opening t- shot for mikkelson just 12 12 yards probably expect this one to be dancing around the hle oh that was a poor one from Phil poor one just an average one yeah a little bit of first de adrenaline maybe good angle for Ernie he won’t mind being just on the left semi here go go you just came out a little bit dead there but I have to say Dear Santa if I can have some Rhythm please can I have earnies W would 34 something’s in this group two of them have got clar jug one of them doesn’t this is The Man Who Would dearly love to get his hands on it little right is it drawing back no not his best he won’t be happy with that from that distance these boys are looking to knock at 5 six feet he’s a wonderful ethic on the practice ground Lee Westwood which I’ll tell you in a second after porus for his bird at the nth this to go 29 is it it was I think that’s him out in 30 6 under par will that be the winning total come Sunday night who knows wonderful run of scoring there for young Hayden leading the open by one as he turns on to the more difficult back nine Patrick reeden with a 66 Justin Thomas with a 67 the two Young Americans suan Lee of Korea already a winner this year as well Jamie Donaldson a 69 for Jamie a hero of the rider cup at Glenn Eagles two years ago Ricky Fowler and Rory Maro they both both of a lot of supporters this week Nik karts 200 under through 10 Alex noran the winner last week up and in vanesse Brandon Grace also round in 70 as is benan and Podrick Harrington two-time open Champion Jordan spe one under playing the last buba Watson really had it going early on now just one under with three to play Scott fern the young Spaniard of whom great things are being said keep your eye on that name three wood for meloy needs to hit the Fairway to have a go at the green and he’s certainly done that absolutely split the Fairway assuming Lee second to 15 it’s a beautiful swing how about that for a graceful action fortunately loses it a bit on the wind it’s and well short Str hand shot back of the first green Phil Mickelson slightly underneath it it’s not quite going to come back lovely weight though that’ll be a solid four for [Applause] Phil well we saw Su Le second to here glove off for his chips unusual that’s not [Applause] bad Classic golf swing swimming late we’ll be hearing a lot about him in the future only for birdie at one ask him about this cross-handed how long it took to get comfortable he said it was feeling really comfortable until Augusta the first green when he had that horrendous six but he said it did take a little getting over but he’s feeling very good with it now and he’s going to need to he’s absolutely smash that past the hole that’s exactly what you don’t want to do on the first hole of any tournament let learn a major you thinking about the you yes I’d love to start with a birdie but get it close make sure you get the four and leave yourself a 4 and 1/2 footer is the open different guys I mean these guys have been everywhere won just about everything but still the first hole of the open you must still feel just a little bit hedgy you want to get the first one over and you’re not relaxed in that first te not really Sam are you no no no no not even close you have to be nervous it’s part of the game it’s what you use for adrenaline if you’re not nervous it means nothing now I was going to I said earlier but Westwood’s ethic on the Range every shot he hits on the driving range is Tournament level it’s like it’s in the tournament so his concentration is the same on the Range as it is here and he’s stuck with that his whole career not quite firm enough for Lee but that’s a great ethic just gets your mind into that tournament set ready to go yeah they say Jack Nicholas used to do that didn’t he every shot on the Range he played it like it was the last shot he was ever going to hit absolute concentration and maybe leaving that putt short just as a result of seeing Ernie’s spe has had a drop away from the protective screens out there decent lie and not Overjoyed with it oh just get down you don’t want to get behind that bunker just looks just okay Tony doesn’t it be able to come around the Trap not over it and he’ll be pleased to see that one drop gave himself a slightly tricky one for his power at the first well I’ll tell you what what a good Rhythm he put on that you know that’s almost in some ways better than nudging it up Stone dead and knocking it in you’ve put a great Pace great stroke on a nice four40 first green and hello it’s with me today the Force is with me tell you three part the sound but I like the way you’re thinking to the 18th and Justin Rose tough closing Hall here at Royal TR a bounds behind the green and it’s not that far behind the green it’s okay with this flag but when you get a bat flag it’s very much in in play M aoy perfect three-wood off the te three-wood into the green oh that’s a big hook Roy it’s missing the green left will it hang on before the thick stuff oh no no he may be able to Jiggle It Around a bunker to about 12T but wonderful wonderful turn look at this head doesn’t move a fraction see the hips start stop turning about halfway back that is just magnificent who right in behind the ball right up the back of it wonderful to watch I will have at least 20 years to watch that GP beautiful swing brilliant popet for Lee oh well no rule against using all of the hole it’s in that’s all that matters well done El was a Craig resplendant across the fth of Clyde here’s how the open leaderboard looks then halfway through this opening day Hayden porus of South Africa leading by one from Patrick Reed by two from Justin Thomas Su Lee and Richard stany Justin Rose is up there Billy hell Shugo imahira of Japan 3 under after 13 and Matt Jones still there as well at 3 under despite the the six 69 for jimy Donaldson there’s Fowler and Michael Roy both at two Greg chamers of Australia couple under after eight it’s one of those courses Royal tun with that the leaderboards always a little bit misleading because players are high in the leaderboard in the front line and then you suddenly see them beginning to slip down when they get onto the back nine it’s the old cliche it really is a a round of two halves here at at Royal TR in this wind in the prevailing wind it’s apparently predicted to maybe turn around a little over the weekend which will make it interesting make the front a little bit tougher and the back nine a bit easier Stefano matsi of Italy one of only two amateur in the field Scott Gregory is the other the amateur champion who was out in 35 and back in 43 unfortunately Darren Clark at 71 you know what Darren might be quite happy with that he’s not been playing a lot of golf the rder Cup captain for obvious reasons he’ll not be too unhappy to be around in an even pass of 71 alongside Tong chai ji and louio Hazen third show from stery at 12 really not really got up today at all just stayed about the same all day it’s a beautiful P excellent how do get that young man Nam Mahira from Japan Shugo in Glasgow he’s just Shug isn’t he we Shug they’ll love him up there in Glasgow Here Comes vug so true the Scottish abbreviation for Hugh no one in Scotland’s ever called Hugh shu is a very close friend Shaggy Bubba Watson in a superb shot from 175 to about 15 ft mat arm’s got to get it on the green no problem but to get close incredibly difficult got to go over this other corner of the other bunker at the front of the green not bad Jamie how difficult is Rory is very difficult Sam I I if he went straight at the flag I’ll give him 10 balls or get one within four or five ft but he’s got to get that spot on I just if he gets inside bubbl he’s done well he’s on a down slope quite a tight lie as well got to come over this bunker he might just run it around that lip that’s a dangerous one nerves of Steel that reminded me of Sano ballister is 197 six against Johnny Miller chipping it between the bunkers on the 18th hands of a surgeon pus nope something’s broken his concentration and okay it’s not too bad and again that saof iron shot he he did not have that shot in his bag 6 months ago so the young man is learning fast and learning well I think that’s a sure I’d like to get rid of T the action you know what I mean Samuel oh uh-oh well that stayed there and for a moment there it looked as if it wasn’t going to it’s not been Jordan’s day and you might say it’s not really been Jordan we’ve got such high expectations of him now after last year and it’s probably unfair he’s only 22 he’s a wonderful Talent he’ll win more Majors just at the moment he’s not the player he was 12 months ago we’re getting near to the end of the round this hole was the easiest hole back in 2004 I read hard to believe those two part FES on the back on the front line but it is or it was now Dey R be watching this one closely up the hill he scared it chihara putting up the 13th oh shy he’s done it the man from Glasgow what a pot there shuku imah nice birdie you’re just a fan cuz he’s got the long putter Sam across the green here for buba little bit right to left big good birdie this one he’s had a frustrating day today BBA 500 early on this round looking cost into 62 or3 C DOL going halt you in your tracks well I think he deserves a birdie on this whole maroy taking that second shot on 299 with a three-w he couldn’t have left it in a worse spot with his chip so fortune favors the brave he got a good chance here it’s going to come off the shoulder of the bunk a little bit left to right but a really good chance here for roran as I say I think he deserves one but you don’t always get what you deserve in this game I’ll just a par for Rory he’s too under two to play not too bad back to the 18th Justin Rose this for a closing birdie for the Englishman go on go on he Dead online and he’ll pop that in for his 68 four birdies just the one drop shot the seventh and that is a really solid and good opening round for the past Champion for mediable back 92 one of the few to score better in the back nine than he did in the front nine young South African on compl left of 10 it’s a dangerous pot across here dangerous po me got to be careful you don’t do that so you have that for his power on the 10th Green’s not particularly quick they really can’t be with the ever presentes wind on links now spe at 18 to avoid dropping a shot at the last now it’s going to be a five for Jordan and it’s around a 71 that’s uh certainly not awful but as I say we have such high expectations of Jordan these days even far 71 and the third member of the trio sadly Shane Lowry a 78 just wasn’t Shane’s day at all the man who had the US Open lead going into the final round hasn’t happened for riro TR now p is to save his part that can very very quickly turn into a double can’t it 221 the 17th very difficult hle named rabbit my dog would like this hole chasing rabbits my dog’s called Monty I know 221 for Rory dear you’ve got everyone giggling in the box now Jimmy that’s Arrow straight from maoy Arrow straight beautiful long iron shot just delicious it’s all right Jamie why did you call it Monty I can’t speak is he a bulldog he was already named he was already named he’s a lovely dog right Bubba come on this is perfect for Bubba wind off the left that was good that was good not great for right-handers but for him it’s perfect hit it at TV camera just drifted into the flag falls off both sides great hole near the end of a round this par three take four threes here it looks started very straight Sam didn’t it started [Applause] straight W that’s a club shot unless he M hidden I don’t think he [Applause] did quizzical look to one of the candy all you can see on This Ti the bunkers in front of the green they made a great job with these bunkers especially the faces revetted faces great to look at not not so good if you’re in them M armor normally hits it very straight we will see pulled that left the seaside golf Link’s golf is different now than it used to be you used to see balls coming in 20 30 yards short of the green landing and running up I know it’s not windy enough maybe to play those shots but they hit the ball so high now that they can stop them on these brick hard greens so quickly that it’s a different game even bubish t- shot into that part three I mean that was drilled with like a two or three iron barely moved a foot when it landed Richard stany second into the long part 4 13th he knew he knew that was a flyer as soon as it slid off the club face tough little chip facing him Phil Michelson for his first birdie of the round at the second oh rattled in that was hold with great conviction there by the former champion former r c teammate Steve [Music] Stricker he’s astonishing stricks oh and I didn’t know that was going to happen but that is a stunning shot and he is three underpar he’ll need that to finish with a 67 next year’s President’s Cup captain for America lovely man and very much on that leaderboard and about to go a little higher what about Justin Thomas his first ever open and his first four holes in the Open Championship were all birdies that’s not a bad record four under after four this morning Justin and the OT 67 only blemish the double bgy at 15 very playable conditions today though not much Breeze nice temperatures absolutely beautiful setting here at Royal trun forecasters tell us this is probably going to be the best day of the four it’s going to be quite wet tomorrow they reckon and a mixture of sunshine and showers over the weekend with the the wind picking up a little bit as well so that’s fine it’s a classic Open Championship little bit of everything you don’t become Champion golfer of the Year easily grass is into him here for Matti not an easy shot he’s going to lob it up and hope for the best this is not easy sit sit sit now gone gone H Jimmy’s dog sits better than that I just can’t imagine walking down the street showing come on Monty now tough bunker shot here for assumingly good lie it’s not that difficult but any sand behind you it must have been sand behind the ball P Li there at 16 shame he’s always very hungry Monty so BBA long part this at the green long P’s not been great today just not got the speed yeah I think it’s hard for the Americans they’re so used to putting on greens that are 12 and 13 on the stim yet around 10 Steve Stricker Brushing in his final birdie Pat the Evergreen Steve Stricker a couple of top 10s in the open back in 2007 2008 but never really threatened to win the oldest major that’s a y after just rolling off the back of the green here at 17 not a bad recovery but it’s such a tough par three Tony isn’t it really is I mean the feature here a lot of these raised greens if you miss it you know on either side you’re always faced with a tough shot Su and Lee to save par up the hill and the guys will be really looking for birdies on 16 not sixes there’s a good pin here isn’t it on 17 in this back right corner and Rory’s put it in the perfect spot you’d have to say someone’s phone’s going off there Lord answer yes keep press the button come on well done this is left to right Ferrari just up a little bit of a ridge at the end will break [Applause] long putt for par for Richard stany after getting a bit of a flyer with a second recovered to here so this for four for the South African now one slips away this for the bogey for hii you look at his face it could be could be for an eagle absolutely utterly devoid of emotion on the golf course yes very well done that could so easily have been the nasty double [Applause] popet this unfortunate of a t-shot that I think Baba thought was perfect when he struck it scoring generally pretty good so far on this opening day uh sadly not everyone is enjoying raal trun the great Sandy loo sadly an 85 for Sandy today 14 overpar playing believe it or not in his 40th consecutive open and his 41st overall hate to see one of the nicest men in the game shooting 85 in the open as Rory pulls out David Deval another former open champion in 82 Steven bodic a 79 Shane Lowry 78 and Danny Lee who played so well and the Scottish open last week 78 as well Paul Dunn the young Irish then amiter who made all the headlines are most the headlines at St Andrews last year 77 in the opening round here so one or two players not enjoying their opening round as the man who is probably the inform player in the world at the moment walks on to the first te Dustin Johnson 204 te off time just about 3 minutes away with Martin kimer and Russell Knox as he looks to begin his round Ricky Fowler looking to end his yeah nice spot on for distance look certainly be big crowd flocking around the three ball about to tea off Dustin Johnson was won his last two events a major in a WGC Martin kimer and of course a Scotsman Russell Knox making up the trao this is game number 40 on the tea from the USA Dustin Johnson obviously one of the favorites this week with his huge length off the tea the first six or seven holes are all buy or even Eagle opportunities he’s always been long but recently he’s been very straight as well Tony hasn’t he he has that but that is not quite the team fromy that came down but whatever it is it’s not good might be on the beach so much for being straight ehy Martin kimer I’ve got a sneaky feeling for Martin this week he’s been playing some pretty golf good golf recently be at all surprised to see him contending for another major he’s already got two going the safe route oh no you don’t want to lay up and knock it in there you don’t want to take an iron for safety and knock it in there that’s not good Russell [Applause] KN big welcome for Russell us-based Scott lives in Jacksonville Florida just tickling one down [Applause] there only one of the illustrious three finding the shot grass my goodness it is a Reload for Dustin well there was a lovely way to start your open three off the tea I think it must be a provisional didn’t look like his first one had gone over the the posts and that’s why he’s hit driver because he can knock it just about on the green he can do that on four of these par fours going out at least back to 18 Jason day in the bunker recovered to here this for four for a par nicely judged but not quite enough pace Hayden porus at the brutally tough 11th hole third shot and again wax it way past the hole hopefully can salvage a par out of it back to Suman Lee Young Korean on the 17th tough far three 221 yards been 20 yards back six off the right so going a back right corner of the green and he’s played a beauty oh how good is this you and I watched him a little bit earlier on in the year Tony and we were impressed he swings it so well doesn’t he Rhythm to die for Ricky F come on Ricky let’s get around in 68 would be [Applause] nice it’s going to be a subpar start for Ricky Fowler round in 69 to underpart playing partner Jason D though not the start the world number one wanted 73 for Jason only a couple of birdies on the [Applause] card yeah it’s the first putties made today that looked a little bit just a loss of Rhythm in the stroke there it all looked a little bit ragged that stroke he’s not the first man to play a wonderful front line and start back bogy bogy I’m afraid that’s what’s happened to headen pus drops out of the lead Patrick Reed now leads the open on his own Danny Willet for a closing birdie that’s for a 70 the Master’s Champion not started back with Bogies at 10 11 and 12 par his way in so it’s an even par 71 for Danny will [Music] it so bogy for Porteus which is disappointing but the 11th hole is playing just a fraction under five today so against the field you know you’ve got to accept that it’s not ridiculous loss Patrick Reed now leads the open on his own after those back-to-back Bogies for Hayden porus who’s one behind alongside Justin Thomas and Steve Stricker Justin Rose in with a very handy 68 three underp Lee hell imahira ichihara and stany all on the back nine all three under still looking for our first Japanese winner of a major we have of course had an Asian winner y Yang and talking about on the men’s side of the game Obviously good start for Kevin n three under after five one of the many many players have picked up birdies early on R Michael Roy two under playing the last and here is the 18th what a tough closing hole Tony yes it is but I mean strangely today this hole is playing under its PA it’s playing 3.95 which I find astonishing cuz it is it’s a it’s a tough closing hole that’s Yama good side of the Fairway to be on down the right but he’s left us a long way back you look at his playing Partners wind off the left which makes the hole a lot easier than when it’s straight into you obviously when it’s into the win this 18th can be a bit of a monster and that’s well played to the third an that stroke is looking good and I’m delighted to say that the wonderful Dame Laura Davis is back with us I’ve got to treat you with such respect now Laura haven’t I you really don’t know you been here since early morning Laura what’s your sort of overall impression of the conditions today I think they’re all very lucky morning and afternoon tea times I mean I think if anything the winds died down I’ve just been walking around out there here’s buba on the last looking to make a birdie for buba he’s had it going so well early doors and came unstuck at the postage stamp not bad at [Applause] all Suman Lee after that lovely t-shot at the par 3 17th for a birdie oh seen a lot of that today just misreading them a little bit and these guys are normally so hot on the lines um yeah I think the TR greens are winning today although we’ve had a lot of birdies and a lot of eagles and generally they’re flattish greens really L you don’t look at them and think o could be some tricky Parts here but inevitably as with every link screen there are those subtle little breaks are so hard to read yeah very subtle meloy driving through another one beautiful swing yeah that’s nice little disappointed with the length but uh not bad at all tough 18 12 just a beautiful day here on the AA Coast in Scotland with Patrick Reed leading the open 66 for five under Thomas and stri both in the clubhouse at for under Hayden portius lovely front line couple of eagles couple of birdies really had it going the young South African but like so many it’s found it a bit harder when he turns into the wind on 10 bogy bogy at 10 and 11 for Hayden Justin Rose is 68 is absolutely fine that’s a very good start for Justin as we look down in the 18th green the old Royal tun clubhouse behind yeah I think it’s out of bounds isn’t it if you just Venture up that little Hill so uh not today maybe but with a back pin you never know that’s the armor chance to square the books up at even [Applause] Ohi matuana world number 17 Fifth and seventh in the last two masters but he’s over par at his opening round in the Open Championship 72 fori there’s Rory now really good chance it’s very difficult to see on these greens but there’s subtle undulations normally when you’re looking at the greens from this angle you can you can see everything but uh I think that’s why they’re having such trouble there’s a better view looks like it’ll be a little bit right to left and and straighten out at the end [Applause] I think that reaction not doesn’t just apply to that pop maybe to Rory’s R today just wasn’t quite there for him hasn’t done any major damage 69 couple under obviously the double bogy at 13 is the one real BL on the card he dropped one at the 14th as well but over the piece couple under for your opening round when the lead at the moment is is five he would obviously have wanted to be a couple better but it’s okay now Bubba for him feels like it should be a little left to rer CU he’s the other way but oh just enough he doesn’t although he was five what is he five under early doors um he never looked comfortable on the greens but one under disappointing but he’s certainly not done himself any harm so 69 for Michael Roy 70 for Watson 72 for mat Yama one of the the main feature groups comes in that’s always a signal for a few of the spectators to have a look at the watch and think oh I wondered why I was hungry let’s go and get a bit of lunch will go on here at run until well after 8:00 this evening some plenty more golf to enjoy as we go to 12 and Hayden pus very nice shot there just in the r used the used the grass to get a bit of Top Spin on that and run it in really good result Stefan mazoli one of the only two amors in the field on the postage stamp oh and he’s made a two and you can see it’s only one hole but on this hole you always a little fist pump for a birdie I had one once I think it was only once but I remember it well I once played the postage stamp I hit six iron so far right I hit six iron for me second shot and that’s no word of a lie I mean I was only about 15 playing the British girls amateur but yeah six iron six on and hold the pter up no it was doubles triples all sorts of chaos out there everyone’s got a postage stamp story Tony it’s a bit like but like Laura really at times it it plays the shortest power four in history that [Laughter] whole dear great H but isn’t it a wonderful game we’re watching the US Open in par threes of whatever it was 230 or something yards and you got one here which they say will be 99 yards later in the week they’re going to going to play it forward and you think that’s wonderful which is the harder well the US Open there was one that was almost it was 280 wasn’t it that’s right that’s what I’m thinking of yeah for a birdie for Russell not to be on this occasion but a good [Applause] try Russell absolutely loved being back home in his home toown of in vanesse last week in the the Scottish open the fairy tale would of course have been a victory didn’t quite manage that but great weight for for Russell and believe it or not Dustin found that first one Tony which amazed us we wonder whether it was even on the beach but it was obviously way right in the long grass well done the marshals I tell you what it would have taken every bit of his unbelievable athletic prowers to move that too that was in deep deep stuff so this for a par he is a proper athlete isn’t he does really is apparently good at all sports this would be a very sporting par this one as well not the ideal start but a lot of holes to go yet yeah I wonder hitting driver on the first there his provisional was only a yard or two short of the green I wonder if that’s his game plan to take these opening par fours on with driver because he can knock it on or very close to them a lot of them on the way out Greg Norman did it in 89 when he lost the playoff to Mark kov Abed the first six now Martin kimer [Applause] K is showing a little bit of the better form lately see the three drives here down the first well grouped all obviously hi irons not quite as Brave as Dustin or not quite as Dar as Dustin I’m not sure which you’d have taken driver Laura I know that absolutely so now it’s all about the second shot from the middle of the Fairway the defending open Champion Zack Johnson looking landing at Short looking to bounce it on didn’t quite happen yeah it’s quite hard to get into your mind that these link screens are actually going to the ball’s going to land and check you’re so used to it landing and you know in your mind it should run out 5 yards at least it had a lot of rain maybe they’ll get firmer by Sunday Laura well I’m not so sure I’ve looked at the weather forecast and it might get softer but it’ll be extremely difficult out there the rest of the week I think this is their chance if they want to put a low one in this is probably going to be their only chance um a lot of people’s pick here Henrik Stenson obviously won a couple of weeks ago in Germany in the BMW full of confidence yeah it would be a hugely popular win too I mean he’s one of these guys we talk about the best player to have not one a major henrik’s right up there at the top of the list I think well now Dustin’s knock one off I think he might be at the top of list might he how long with Serio I I think it’s a tragedy if Sergio never wins one and and he probably well who’s to say but um yeah that would be awful if he never won one I think padrick Harrington stole a couple of him not of view the Sharon Ireland L 149 yards plus Scotty another great three ball to watch this one Zack Johnson Adam Scott and Henrik stanson should see some fireworks on those three’s the young career had such a good day Su Le Shenzhen International Champion back in April in China has breakthrough when on the European tour no a shot that’s another iron shot that is is left out right and it’s it’s hard to see why isn’t it That Swing is just glorious Bill Mickelson second shot into the fourth this is the PIN it’s very difficult to get near to this you can’t Bubba went for it earlier in the day but I think most players are going to be playing into that gap on the right and running it up hopefully getting pin High bit tight not bad tough chip mind you is there a tough chip for Phil we’re going to find out shortly that average human being wouldn’t be looking forward to that one but he’s a bit special stery third to 15 long long put his Pace has been extremely good today and no change there beautiful but so good to see Richard playing well again he had all those injury problems and really struggled for a couple of years he beginning to find that Tournament winning form as we go to 12 and Hayden pus well steady the ship after Bogies at 10 and 11 remains one behind tatrick Reed they haven’t quite worked the speed of the greens though yeah have they I think most of the putts we’ve seen today have been short if they’ve been off um at all very few have been ran past down at the first seen all the shots in now they’ve all got the birdie chances Zack Johnson defending Champion he’s going to go first good 30 25 30 ft it’s amazing going around the all the tours in the world both on the men’s side and the women so many brilliant young players players in their early 20s and yet you look at the last few open Champions Darren Clark Phil Mickelson Zack Johnson all all in their 40s any El you know it’s sometimes when it comes to the majors experience counts for an awful lot doesn’t yeah and especially on Lynx type golf you know you don’t get too many guys that you know haven’t played any lyx golf coming over it does happen coming over and featuring but yeah experience is golden it pays to be an old coder oh that’s such a comfort Tony we’re a couple of old codgers aren’t we Tony but we young at heart Laura We’re Young at Heart looking good from Zach oh there you go knock it on the front edge and hold a 30 footer who cares well he did say it broke his heart to give the claric jug back and he may not be parting with it for long if he’s going to put like that well done Zach defending champion of and running with a birdie I saw Lee come up short right but he’s putting and I think he’d be happy just to get two putts and that took couple of funny little bounces but look at the break on that and that is well judged really nice C to finish his day I’ll pop that in and that’s good work from Suman that’s well done Su had a very good year played well in a couple of the co-sanctioned events between the European and Asian tours earlier in the year one in Shenzhen second in the May Bank Championship high in the Asian tour order of Merit a real talent now Stenson looking to do aach Johnson yes it’s good P nothing wrong with that opens a day with a steady par never played Royal trun before didn’t play here in 2004 or 97 and he’s now completed the circuit he’s now played all the open venues Scotty Dead online it’s always difficult on the first green because you know these guys the KY H would have told his player look it’s running about 10 on the stim but the practice putting greens are not always exactly the same Pace I’m not saying they’re different this week but so often the practice putting green is a different pace and you get on the first green and you lag it or you run it by you’ll soon get the hang of it Billy hell here birdie chance is to get one behind beautiful very nice birdie there well he’s not finding the back nine too much of a problem that’s his second birdie two under for the back nine couple under for the front nine and Billy hell now tied for second Kevin n as we said off to Flying start birdie 2 3 4 and six two Japanese players imahira and ichihara coming towards the end of their opening round both at three under 69s for Donaldson and sing Fowler mroy and the big hitting Gary Woodland talking of big hitting Tony Fino two under after 10 there’s the amate Stefano matsi of Italy great start for Stefano let’s hope he can keep it together last week’s winner in the Scottish open Alex noren 70 was his birthday earlier this week Brandon Grace and Ben Anne among the players on 70 second te here Zach Johnson after a lovely birdie putt out with the iron I’d say probably 95% of the field are going to hit irons off all three of these first holes nice crisp swing Caddy’s staring it down a bit might be oh no it’s perfect straight down the middle up ahead Russell KNX bunkered green side oh that was a horrible lie judging by the shorty tried to play there and it’s still in there looked suspicious suspiciously like it might have come back towards his Footprints too that is just ugly Adam Scott PS with the iron it must be Temptation for the likes of Scotty and Stenson who have Firepower to have a go at the screen and it’s okay what a fabulous view of the shot as well was lovely wasn’t it good camera workout [Applause] there spectacular backdrop over the F of Clyde over to the wonderful aisle of Aaron if you’ve never played played golf in the aisle of Aon do yourself a favor short holiday courses including the 12 hole shisen which is just as much fun as you can have in a golf course with your clothes on Stenson here fully clothed luckily I think there’s a lot of ladies out ladies out there that wouldn’t agree with that I remember him stripping off to PL out the hazard it was headline news all over the place yeah I enjo that’s my favorite shot calm down now Laura calm down he’s a great character isn’t he and like we all love him [Music] DJ the shoulder of the bunker here to contend with not that easy to get the pace right he’s made a good job of it I think in his mind when he teed off he would have been thinking you know I’d like to be three or four under after five holes needs to get going pus with his second at 13 thumps down through it must have had a half decent lie got it just oh that’s a very good shot he’s going to be unlucky though he’ll be disappointed when he gets up there melon here short birdie chance I’ve got to say it all around good P yeah someone had to say it oh something in the eye bones is a quick check no your eyeballs still in place where Russell KN his troubles in the bunker so this is a bogey putt for the Scott oh ugly start for Russell birdie put for Ernie at four to get into red numbers look at that stroke look at that Rhythm honestly I watched him for at least for 3 5 minutes on the pting the other day and never saw a single Pat that was jerky it is different when you’ve had the lury on and off the course but he sounds so confident and that’s 90% of the battle won DJ legely tap in and leisurely walk off to the next T at one over though he’ll turn that around you can be unbelievably certain of that confence Russell KNX and for is double and Patrick Reed still leads the open by one Justin Thomas Steve Stricker Billy Hall Aiden porus and Kevin n all just one behind three good safe t- shots again at the second from Scott Johnson and Stenson just waiting while the gentleman finishes off tidying up the bunker I think one of the features of stanson’s play you know we know his short game has got so much better over the last few years but his course management he’s learned to plot his way around the golf course like a course General between him and lordy they get they get right 99% of the time that was Russell knox’s bunker that caused the the problem there there was a bit of repair needing done all professional greenkeepers by the way that follow each group members of the British greenkeepers Association the guys who carry the RS and make sure that the bunkers are restored to pristine condition for the following match it’s a nice treat for the Cades that they nor nor that’s their worst job so they must love it good view here we’re going to see it really high strike here we’ll be trying to get some spin on this let’s beenin cut just a few over this front bunker come on and you come another clever shot just not wanting to tangle with those tickled pins pus we saw unluckily ran off down the bank here he’s got a lot of green to work with but it’s not a particularly Easy Shot dependent on lie and he’s done very well indeed well done young man Zach Johnson similar distance to Stenson they came might going a little bit right of this pin as well try and spin it in off that slope slight slope not a big slope yeah probably used henrik’s ball as a a pretty good line there forget the pin that’s the half the battle sometimes you know you want to go for Pins but you just can’t on on occasions like this when they’re pretty tightly cut to the edge little Seaside town of trun in the background Center of world sporting attention this week Scotty not happy with that one and not hard to see why yeah he was left with very little shot wasn’t he and the way he looked at this man I he might have got a little flyer there o the drivers are 382 little bit of wind behind he can reach we saw Bubba earlier this morning get on oh he’s hit the rough quite a long way back actually would have had plenty of run on it but unfortunately he’s a probably five yards too far right there F 206 yards today that’s a talk to it you got to talk to it what a lovely shot and you can see Ricky Roberts said that this is the best a seen only swing it in 10 years and I’ll tell you what you’d be hard to you’d be hard pressed to argue with that the Rhythm always looks good though doesn’t it lovely rhythm anyone that’s learning the game Watch her’s Rhythm POA here for porus keep the round oh that’s a bad one he’d be disappointed with that cuz it was not a bad shot out of a horrible lie he’s walking off with another bogy third bogy of the day and all on the back nine Phil Mickelson just seeing a lovely shot in here going to try and do pretty much what Ernie did doesn’t like [Applause] it to 16 there should be a bogie pu excuse me for Kiara of Japan oh goodness he’s farther away just hit that straight past the hole very strange part for the Japanese a lovely run of birdies at 12 13 and 14 but it’s a bgy at the par 516 so slips back to two under that was a strange one Patrick Reed there he is above top of the leaderboard he’ll be enjoying his afternoon Adam Scott like Tony said a little bit of a flyer I think just the difference between being in the Fairway and being a couple of feet into the rough and no real control but uh it’s a pretty tough two part now judg beautifully didn’t me brushes it in for par and Dustin Johnson it’s 280 is over that ditch and he only just carried it with the driver I don’t think he got the strike at all right on that t-shot because he should be blowing it way past that and this is not easy bunker in the way surely he’s going to leave the flag [Applause] alone apparently on the Range before the around Dustin Johnson was spraying it all over the place with the driver which is not what we expect from him from one Johnson to another in fact from one Johnson to another to another I’m clear you’re a bit shorter than the other two these days Tony yeah in height and length of the te that’s nice back toback birdies for Zach great start serious competitor that man is was actually lovely listening to Zach talking about how much it meant to to him and all his family and friends to have the the Claret jug in their possession for the last year it just went everywhere with them and everybody wanted to hold it and have a drink from it and he used to leave it in the Pro Shop when he was playing playing golf for everyone just to come in and and to see it isn’t that magical you can have that in your life for a year forever and ever his name will be on that clar Chuck ston here trying to follow Zach in similar line should have got a bit of a read oh bit unlucky good top [Applause] KN here and repair a little bit of the damage of the last hole it’s good try but he’ll be disappointed two over after three not a good start but he’s got two reachable power fives coming up so I’m sure he can repair all that P t- shot for full but it’s on the surface and you just never know this man with a pter maybe not quite as deadly from 4 feet and in as he used to be five or 10 years ago but you still wouldn’t want to lose many against him in a pting contest or bet him in a pting contest what oh no Russell what a stinger that is just has to be like a concentration doesn’t it I mean that’s very unusual for the guys to to miss anything like that there goes big Ernie lovely t-shot in very good chance Tony was saying lovely stroke watch the Rhythm very nice lovely Ernie I think that would be another popular win if Ernie could do something magic this week yeah his head just seems to be in such a good place I don’t think I’ve ever seen well not for 10 years of I seen Ernie is totally relaxed and chilled about everything to do with the game great to see there’s Dustin trying to get that one back he lost not quite hit it but after the t- shot I think really birdie was never really on the cards now that’s about as demonstrative as we ever SE Dustin just a little wave of the hand hit it a bit harder but long way too Richard stery right in the Jaws little three under there it’s a nice opening round if we can just get home with a couple of pars a long part here good 30 35 fet torus on the 14th very now the Judgment long we’ve seen some very good long long pots in the last s half an hour 45 minutes getting to grips with these greens the pace of them hey 18th and Billy Hall that’s for a closing birdie for the American this for a 66 to join Patrick Reed oh that is grow still a lovely R opened up with a bogey at the third and then had five birdies thereafter played the back nine and two under good goal from Billy Hall Taps it in for 67 he’s alongside Justin Thomas and Steve Stricker his two fellow countrymen just one off the lead five Americans on top of the leaderboard here’s a South African chasing him down good start chance for a birdie here for sure downwind reachable par five all right right get lucky well I think he has you know I think he’s just on the edge of the crowd walkway there I think if that chap hadn’t kicked it might have come back a bit more I think he’s a bit unlucky Earnie there leather wedge there’s how the leaderboard looks on this opening round of the 145th Open championship at Royal trun catrick readed leading by one Kevin now after a flyer as so many have four birdies in the first six hes for he’s just part the seventh Justin Rose a 68 as a su Lee of ker little bit further down great start for sain Kelson too sain playing some of the best golf of his life in his 40s 69 from Donaldson and sing Fowler melroy and Woodland Justin Leonard who won here in 1997 two under after eight Justin hardly play I think he played maybe one round of golf between last October and may he lives in Aspen Colorado now and spends all his time skiing and living a winter Mountain lifestyle where’d you get this stuff from how do you know that oh it’s nonsense I make it uplo all right fair enough no it’s actually true I believe every word you [Laughter] say Marco Mera former open Champion birdie at the first and there’s Monty 71 double Buie at the first and then finished an even par think we’re going to see Dustin get after one here a little bit frustrated with his start for sure hugging the right side needs a bit of a bounce probably oh he’s carried the corner that’s nice not going quite as far as they were this morning which makes me believe the winds die down a bit [Music] Henrik ston wearing a black ribbon in his cap to remember a great friend of his Mike garik from Dubai member of the Emirates Golf Club who sadly passed away yesterday and uh we obviously commiserate with Henrik and all Mike’s friends in the Middle East quite sure that uh fitting tribute to his buddy than winning the open this week still have it a Swedish male major champion and you think of many wonderful Swedish women players have had Lara it’s surprising that we haven’t it is amazing considering how many great Swedish male players we’ve had um obviously Hendrick’s probably at the top of the tree but there’s been so many good players he’s done so much else hasn’t he just about everything else other than win a major in the game of golf [Music] and it’s okay I think henrik’s just I think he’s just going to get a little slow build up here he’s just going to plot plot his way around plot along Adam right from the middle of the Fairway nice pin very accessible imagine this one will be pretty close not bad at all probably would have liked it a bit closer but that’s a very good birdie chance birdie birdie start for Zach don’t be surprised if he makes it a hattrick you know you’re right Laura that wind has changed a little directions definitely they they predicted it and they weren’t wrong it’s just about straight off the right now it was down with win this morning wasn’t it I think that’s going to do two things it’s going to make the start a lot more difficult but it’s going to make that back line this this evening a lot easier so we could see a little bit of a change in the scores front to back nine now should go IMA or shy as Sam has christened them [Applause] and here’s another of the favorites in many people’s fancies sario Garcia about to get his open challenge underway once again an iron off the tea started down the right side but wind off the right just keeps it in the first cut from the USA de Bradley leave Keegan and instead go to try and find Martin both former uspga Champions beautiful sky overhead really is a lovely day to be playing golf just a nice teasing Seaside Breeze May well be the best day of the of the four if the forecasters are right looks like he’s taking a bit of a risk here is a a wood out of the rough on the up slope gripping way down looks like he’s changing his mind probably not a bad decision at this stage yeah changed his mind going to go a little punch iron down the Fairway leave himself one of his favorite numbers here just a controlled one common sense the bit a part of there very good layup down the right side Henrik Stenson on the third coming in off the right for Henrik nobody though DJ the US Open Champion we saw some of the longer hitters in here this morning they could just about or Bubba did for sure he had his Drive I think 390 down this hole and he had a I think a 99 in there that’s and he spun it which I just don’t think this afternoon they’re going to be able to do although the wind like we’ve just said Tony was just saying it’s it’s a little bit into makes it a little bit easier but imagine this is going to be pin high right 15 ft that’ll be a good shot excellent start for the defending Champion Z Johnson buies at the first two holes no not three in a row but solid part mlon at six third shot cut more cut we we do expect better from Phil with a wedge as does he just B first remove your front lawn Adam Scott now chance to move into red numbers oh didn’t break P need to be frustrated yet so nice PA [Applause] mahara final green that P is definitely proved to be slower than the players see it seen very few players reach the hole unfortunately this is the fourth shot for he didn’t get lucky off the tea and a bit of Fizz bit of Fizz bit of Fizz nice touch from The Big Easy goes kimer had to lay up now is he going to benefit with a nice wed shot try and make his Birdie the the oldfashioned way beautiful Chris strike trying to generate a lot of spin on this one very nice Kevin nah who such a wonderful start coming to grief at the uh postage stamp had to come backwards out of the bunker and he hold it Well Done Kevin the Run of birdies comes to an end but could have been a double gets away with a four seen a lot of that today a lot of damage limitations some long PA PS and bunker shots hold so uh they’re keeping the numbers down at the moment but yeah I agree you can imagine when the weather gets a bit worse as it’s supposed to it could uh it could be Carnage out there because this is I have to say perfect conditions isn’t it it is Ross fiser in fact has just tweeted disappointing start to the open after playing so well on the front line course was there for the taking I didn’t take it I think a lot of play players will probably feel the same way today laa yeah Justin Rose Mew well talking of tweets has said happy with my first round 68 3 under you see the hole nice little fade if you like fading it this is a good shaped hole for you aim it at those two bunkers and slide it off down the left side B beautiful yeah all right it going very nice oh don’t go in a just in the back of that div it makes it a little bit more difficult but nothing these guys can’t do handle Adam Scott another man who plays a fairly reduced schedule all based around trying to Peak for the the four majors each year oh my goodness that’s a big hook on The Spectator walkway it’s so bad it might actually be okay he’s missed all the rough stuff and as long as somebody do a step on it should be right I think it’s finished where someone stood it looked like it was in a footprint there tones of s Toren that’s rejoin us looks like you’ve been doing a bit of shopping son did Douglas yes mustn’t waste time it’s so beautiful out there there’s not much wind at all idilic conditions Stenson might have his trusty 3-wood out here not bothering with the driver doesn’t need the distance and this really is his favorite Club in the bag first of the par fives [Applause] here well that caught an UPS slope which killed it lost all its run but it’s right up there well Zack Johnson’s driver Dustin’s shaky start continues doesn’t look comfortable at the moment a lot of people’s picks for this week pH melson not too happy with his approach asking for it to cut but it stayed out there so he’s got this for a body and he’s made it nice four for the former winner three birdies in the first six for Phil [Applause] Mickelson he would certainly be a popular winner kimer here good chance to move to one under like he’s going to aim is just outside the right hope it just drifts in off that right Ed just didn’t move headden pus this is for par speed’s good that’s an excellent pu so just a one shot drop for [Applause] Aiden finding the course a bit more difficult in the back nine Hayden as most of the players have as we go to Ernie at six that’s to save par and stay at two under oh now that was as poor a stroke as he’s put in the P since the first he really has been putting confidently that looked a little bit tentative Laura didn’t it yeah that was that was an ugly one that takes you back to the Masters this year at the first screen when he had all those problems but he’s got to put that out of his mind immediately because otherwise it’ll just progressively get worse easier said than done mind you the man at the top of the leaderboard is Patrick Reed and one of the many Innovations around the open in recent years is the junior open which started back in ’94 when two youngsters under the age of 16 one boy one girl player of course close to the open venue uh previous participants have included Rory mooy and Jordan SP Paula Creer and Patrick Reed who won in 2006 when the open was at H lake so he’s the junior open Champion then in 10 years on he’s leading the open early days but a wonderful way to start your golf in Korea getting to play in the junior open they do come from all over the world there and of course supporting golf all over for the world something like 10 million is reinvested from the open profits into supporting golf worldwide about 5 million in governance on rules and equipment and so on and another 5 million on development that’s where a lot of the money goes where a lot of the stars of the Future come from there you see the drives Adam Scott tolded his we saw possibly not a good lie the other two in perfect condition not too bad Stevie Williams there working out a number for his man wonder what his book’s doing I don’t know I haven’t read it did you read it no I haven’t read it either yeah C little bit of controversy when it came out no I haven’t but I bet you he’s read it a few times yes how the four have been played stroke average 4.59 as you would expect easiest hole in the course an obvious birdy opportunity but that’s not what Adam’s thinking at the moment like a little Bird’s n you’re right Sam it’s almost like someone’s foot’s stomped into the ground and his Ball’s gone into it but that’s a pretty long on I imagine he’s going to try and muscle this one down there run it up just be real still at the shot that’s a pretty impressive record for Adam in recent years I know that one of those he certainly should have won with that awful finish with the four Bogies in a row to let hany in but he’s always been in the top 10 over the last few years I think when he gets down there I think he thinks he’s hit that further than he did he he’s actually he’s left himself a tough angle but he’s left himself a full shot T fin out long hitting American 400 to1 he was at the beginning of the week one in Costa Rica earlier this year probably not 400 to one no Sam no he’s not here’s Stenson perfect position just going for that gap between the two bunkers you can see just one in the middle of the ground stand the other one just right that’s the line today well you couldn’t walk up there and place it in a worse position such a shame it’s three yards either side no not left but right he needed to be right there to have any chance of getting into that PIN you’ve got good eyes Laura Davis my goodness you knew that was in the front edge of a divot there well spotted is this kicking left or it’s oh it’s Perfection for the defending Champion magnificent bit tricky put over the corner of the mound but it’s a lot easier than chipping well the favorite who’s had a pretty Rocky start to his Open Championship challenge Dustin Johnson on the potting surface but again not quite what he was looking for that’s interesting the reports we got from the range that he really wasn’t hitting the driver well at all and if Dustin’s not driving it well then you’re taking away with his major asset to seven and Phil Mickelson strike was too good just took good too much spin on that one F Michelson though that’s a pretty good chance 20 ft or so just over [Applause] we saw this shot earlier that’s exactly how very well played very very well played by Richard [Applause] stery s’s your part at the opening Hall this is a second to the second a good shot I just had 5 minutes on the Range watching him with his father and his father says it’s the best to se seen him swing in years which is always a good sign when you hear that from your dad as your coach you’d know that better than anyone Sam and Richard sty very good up and down for his four at the last and the South African round in 68 three under par good start for Richard and as we said earlier really good to see him playing well again playing to the standard that he can and has done in the past playing with the Aussie Matt Jones who was out in 31 but bird the last for 69 double bog is at 11 and 12 Matt Jones so Adam Scott here very difficult shot chances are to throw this a little bit past the pin try and spin it back a bit he went right that’s not too bad very difficult pin there looking at some of the players have finished recently we talked about Billy Hall nice opening round for Billy 67 Mato manaco back to form a little bit 70 69 for Rich Hara Dustin here lovely P it’s okay wasn’t really a chance just a good two c make the par move on car five coming up for him Kevin kizner bird but at 10 for the American he’s made it to well we all know that uh famous statistic the last six winners of the open here at R TR have all been American you have to go back to 1950 and the Great South African Bobby lock to find a non-american winning The clar Jug and the leader board at the moment is once again dominated by Americans here’s Stenson shot Sam he’s looks like he’s opted to put this he really doesn’t fancy it at all it’s very difficult I’m assuming he’s just going to at best knock this about 10 ft right of the pin and take his chances that way it’s a cent unless he’s doing a slingshot off the edge of the Trap which I think is too dangerous I think he’s doing exactly what you said LA and just up to the right we saw Patrick Reed do it this morning he chipped up 20 ft right and we tried to be slingshot that’s okay that’ll be for birdie very dangerous shrugs the arms what could I do nothing you can do sometimes you just got to take your medicine on the BMW Masters in June in Germany first since the TP World Tour Championship in Dubai at the end of 2014 that was his 10th win in the European tour Henrik man has one all over the world he’s done just about everything in the game except win a major J st’s family back home in Pretoria we’re delighted with his start lovely people wonderful hosts and we’re down for the shwani open later in the year that Johnson here after that amazing metal three looked like a three-wood managed to get it down here on the front edge Good Eagle chance chance to go four under after four I say a good chance that was a very difficult but wasn’t it very tough not a bad effort little [Applause] short so a shot into seven for Michelson just to get to four under two behind the leader read let pull that or push that should no it’s a pull for a left-hander I was right the first time stenen for an unconventional two here they’ve all done it they’ve all left it out to the right they’re obviously seeing something in that break in that part that breaks and it just doesn’t do it but we’ve had the benefit of watching it all day now The Big Easy let’s see if we can smooth this one in that was a lovely stroke delightful Str it’s good to see it back cuz the last one wasn’t I don’t know where the last one came from because he started off putting so well but the D the the bogey at five was a very wafty sort of putting stroke don’t know where that one came from but he’s back on track The Big Easy that’s a weird part cuz that one very similar line and it just it stays there he obviously saw the P before and it’s just a difficult pin oh great view behind Dustin Johnson here that’s perfect that started straight down the middle there she goes great work by the cameraman or woman his name’s his name’s Rob it’s Rob Gunter and it’s cameraman thank you good save there Sam well done knowledge good producer there’s no other kind Sam I know who signs the checks yeah good birdie there from Zach moving along really [Applause] nicely that’s a terrific start for Zack and everybody talks about who they fancy and who are the favorites and who’s going to win the open I didn’t see Zach’s name mentioned very often as a defending Champion apart from Mr torren of course probably had a pound each way on him or something but for Sergio think this course suits him gr McDow and and Zack Johnson were my two tips cuz I think the course is perfectly set up for them it’s a strategic course Kevin that for his power at nine oh that’s some fancy trousers isn’t it my goodness look at that not a very good stroke though Lee Westwood excellent second into seven let to get back to level well done Le good po another one who’s dabbled with a cross-handed back to regulation grip back to par he’s got more here than he had a minute ago so I really really good starts coming apart a little bit for Kevin Nar that’s a good stroke settled himself down knocked it [Applause] in there’s how it looks opening round of the Open Championship Patrick Reed still leads by one from Thomas Stricker and horel Americans everywhere you look Justin rosea 68 Su Lee a 68 just to prove that’s complete nonsense Shugo Imahara obviously in with a 68 there’s Kevin Kisner three under after 10 but he’s just gone out of bounds off 11 I don’t know whether he’s on the railway line but he’s certainly OB so he’s going to be battling to try to drop only one there’s the skier Justin Leonard former winner one here in 9 7 Jones did well to recover to a 69 after back-to-back doubles and marira who we suspect is probably the oldest man in the field marks 59 now I’m sure he’ll be heading up to KUSI next week to play in the Senior Open Championship looking forward very much to heading north to that great golf course no Zach he loves this he loves this what a gorgeous long IR shot beautiful views there look at that you just want to play golf in weather like this up be don’t you fantastic that was the a ofon were’re looking at I was talking about earlier luro I once played a 100 holes in a day on the aisle of Aon for a charity event great fun started in midsummer’s day I think qu to 4 in the morning went a bit tired at the end the back 50 was tough are you sure it was the 100 watering holes now that came later I was born in Lars up the road and The Cross by Aron the supposedly the sleeping Warrior which I promise you I’ve got pictures of it in the house and I still can’t see I have never seen it and it’s one of those things you either see or you don’t yeah I know what you mean it’s like Lion Rock in Cape Town and so on where the hills are meant to I know what you mean the yeah I can see what they mean but it doesn’t look to me like a sleeping Warrior something with an imagination sorry about that but he didn’t like it and that’s why he’s not been in good form all year Henrik I know he won a few weeks ago but he’s not been in good form and when that boy’s on form he is very very good mikkelson here on the postage stamp seen lots of birdies but we’ve seen a few nightmares mson will be looking to just get this on the [Applause] green but it is Phil looking for a little bit more as usual fantastic used to be called Elsa the postage stamp Willie Park Jr wrote green the size of a postage stamp and it’s stuck since then Ela because of the Elsa Craig but I think postage stands much more apt this is Dave Copeland of England oh well old there’s a moment to remember from B atin and Linker qualified at Hillside that great golf course in Southport apologize if not pronouncing his name right see up it might be Copeland but I think it’ll probably be Copeland ker here going for the sixth the wind’s clearly changed cuz they were knocking midon well some of the longers r mid irons in here this morning and now they’re you’ve just seen in k a big Drive followed by a big three-wood nowhere near getting on so conditions changing here’s Dustin just the 322 into the wind 272 left he’s having to go with the wood so so here we go again going to try and get a little slider in there well that’s either a complete Mish hit or the wind is really picked up because that’s aot long way back not a bad angle for this pin though if it is changing it will make the back nine a lot easier for them unless it changes back which it can do that was a very strange shot though wasn’t it we’re all looking for that in the green close to now Hayden porus who struggled a bit on the back nine but could put things to right here no Eagle for Hayden tap and birie won the jber open at wonderful Royal Johannesburg and Kensington back at the start of the Year Stenson looks like a pretty heavy lie chop down on this get it running forward when it lands oh it’s lovely very nice wonderful stretch of beach isn’t it not too many sunbathing I have to say but certainly looks good Adam Scott for a birdie long one [Applause] though great try from Adam great part of the world to play golf in the AA Coast so many wonderful Coast there’s two open venues obviously here at trun and just a little bit further down the course at turnbury the new Trump turnbury absolutely Sensational let me tell you right up there with a very best I ever seen but so many good courses in this this County the home county for Sam it is Douglas and I agree with Terra of it’s needed done for so long that ninth hole needed Rectify cuz it’s such a magnificent course and and Trump as you say has done a magnificent job well done Martin abber was the designer but the owner had more than a hand in it Martin was telling me but what a job they’ve done but when you think of all the others as well the Gils courses come on at barassi me your home course at LS they just irin bug side there are so many that are just a joy to play even the ones around here at TR Darley Fullerton lovely shot there from [Applause] Dustin nichelson here his second shot of the postage stamp a formality surely beautiful lug birdie Bill nichelson moves to Joint second at four under far four under after eight F Phill and there’s always a bounce in your stat after your bird the postage stamp
